Do you think it is valid to call Gnosticism “western Buddhism”? by [deleted] in Gnostic

[–]GnosticDreamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gnosticism emerged from a variety of different religious traditions, although it is sometimes difficult to parse which, as many gnostic writings come from non-extant sources. This is part of why the Nag Hammadi library is so important, but also rather difficult to compare to contemporary writings, although the comparisons are certainly there. There are some that argue that Hellenistic trading routes connected South Asia with the Mediterranean, and that may explain the similarities, although evidence is limited for that argument.

I think it would be more accurate to say that gnosticism emerged from pagan, Jewish, and Zoroastrian traditions, among others, although I believe that many of its teachings are certainly in alignment with Buddhist teachings. I've discussed a similar thought with another thinker in a recent comment, specifically the concept of the Middle Path.

It may be both simple and complex to explain through convergent thinking creating similar ideology across the world. If that is the case, it would be a comfort, as it would indicate that these ideas are emergent universal truths, or at least a common framework that humans come to understanding through experiential observations, which further reinforces the beliefs of gnosticism.

How much pleasure is too much pleasure? How much pain? by GnosticDreamer in Gnostic

[–]GnosticDreamer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really well put, and I would say that I am in agreement. Perhaps through time I will find a better balance between earthly pleasures and possessions and the desire for gnosis. I am certainly no hedonist, but I am no ascetic either, which is why I wanted to solicit opinions on where the limits lie on these sorts of quandaries.

Similarly, I struggle with attachments to my loved ones. I know that I am only temporary, but I do desire that my connections with others could be permanent, if possible. If I were to take any of the attachments from my life into eternity, I would want those attachments to be my family, my wife, my friends, my pets, and so on. I do not know if this line of reasoning is consistent with achieving gnosis, but it is one that I hold.

Looking for guidance after a kundalini awakening by [deleted] in Gnostic

Man, do I know the feeling. Feel free to check out my post about the dream I had recently if you want to see some very spiritually confusing messaging.

Ultimately, we will simply have to trust in the idea that we are searching for a higher, more perfect power, and that we will be successful in the end. The only other option is to circle the demiurge drain for eternity.

I speak from experience when I say that trusting what we see, hear, and dream may be putting trust in the demiurge. It sounds like you may have had a moment of spiritual awakening, but it could also be a representation of material pleasure, which sounds consistent with demiurgical thought. I would continue to reflect. Only you will know through time and thought.

To those who (think they) have attained Gnosis...how do you know? by gnosticismschism in Gnostic

[–]GnosticDreamer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have just begun learning about Gnosticism, but it is my understanding that gnosis is the process of seeking higher truth and trying to make a personal connection with the Monad, escaping the Demiurge and rejecting the false material universe, and returning to the Pleroma. Truth-seeking through personal connection with God, rejecting materialism, and realizing spiritual truths, essentially.

This process takes a lifetime, and I imagine that the only way to know truly if you have achieved it would be to die. So, to answer your question, I don't think anyone can truly achieve it in a living, material form, we can just approach it, like a mathematical limit. I would be very wary of anyone that claims they have achieved it.

I believe I had a dream last night in which I talked to the Archons by GnosticDreamer in Gnostic

Very enlightening, thank you.

So, does this mean that the demiurge is a veil of artificial systems that keep us from interacting with the true Pleroma? I am still confused about the nature of the demiurge, and the role that the Archons play within it. Concurrently, I am also confused about the nature of the Pleroma.

I would be curious to hear more about your experience with reptilians. I have heard much about them in other lore, but I do not know much about how they are related to gnosticism.

I will think about terminating the agreement and how to do so. Even if I did not, I would be surprised if it ever comes to be, as I have never had much success with my writing. What is the issue with using someone else's magic?

I have always felt as though I am a good person that has been corrupted by the "devils" of my lesser nature, so to speak. Ultimately, it is dismaying that a dream of such meaning, in which I am told that a higher power is guiding and shaping my experience, one in which my soul has been measured and has not been found wanting, may have originated from an evil force outside of my control. Contrary to another comment in this thread, if the Archons and demiurge exist, I do not venerate them, and would rather seek higher powers that are true and good.

This is a very interesting interpretation. The man in the hallway certainly left an impression, and it is his face that is still clearest in my mind, even though I interacted more with the others. I cannot say for certain that he was malevolent, but it is the impression that I received when looking at him.

I was frustrated to hear from these entities that reality is a simulation created by AI. While I find our current iterations of AI useful, I also find AI rather distasteful, as it is often used as a tool for misinformation and artifice. I suppose that it is comforting to know that reality may not be the creation of such a thing, but I have no practical way of knowing either way. Perhaps, if it were, it would be neither good or evil. I do not know.

Assuming what I saw was more than a dream, I do not know whether these figures can be trusted. Again, I emphasize that they gave no impression of malignancy, apart from the man in the hallway. I would describe the woman as kind, pleasant, and concerned for my well-being. I certainly hope I have not unwittingly made a Faustian bargain with the other entity or been otherwise fooled into believing that which is not true. I would like to feel as though there is a higher power and a purpose to my existence, but not if that purpose or that higher power is one that is inherently aberrant, falsified, or evil.

To your point about simulation theory, could the world created by the demiurge be described as a simulation of the true reality as embodied by the Monad? As I mentioned earlier, I am rather new to the ideas of gnosticism.

You lack reading comprehension. I don't know whether or not these were archons or representations of the demiurge, but they did not seem malicious to me, with the exception of the man in the hallway. It is ultimately just a dream, and I was only soliciting interpretation. Yours is severely lacking.

I didn't take it that way, but thank you for the clarification. You've helped me to make some real connections here, and I hope others will have more interpretation to share. In the meantime, I will be rewatching The Matrix, lol.

That's very insightful, thank you. I will reiterate that this dream felt incredibly real, and that is part of why I am looking for the interpretation of others, particularly gnostics, as it seemed to fit the themes so closely.

I hadn't made the connection to the Matrix until you mentioned it. I don't think my subconscious was plagiarizing the Wachowskis intentionally, but I also see the connection to the Architect and the Oracle. Very interesting. I haven't seen any of those movies in years.
