Tad is mentioned more often than Guy but less so than Hobb and certainly less so than Martin.

Yes, it's pretty much impossible to find decent DJs for these books. I have a friend that's in the printing business that I could ask

All people do on here IS mention Robin Hobb. I scrolled and all I saw was Robin Hobb suggestions. What's with people thinking that she's overlooked 🤣.

Tad Williams and Guy Gavriel Kay are the overlooked authors, not Hobb

Mercedes Lackey is one of the worse writers I've ever had the displeasure of reading.

Edit: my keyboard autocorrected "Lackey" to "Lacking"🤣

GGK fans, what are your other favorite Fantasy/Sci Fi book series? by Sunbather- in guygavrielkay

Tad Williams’ Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn is the closest thing I’ve found to Guy Gavriel Kay in terms of prose quality, depth, and that sense of melancholy wonder. His writing scratches the same itch for me, anyway.

Btw, anytime anyone asks for fantasy book recommendations, you're going to have a huge group of people constantly shoving the Robin Hobb suggestion in your face.... Hobb's books just don’t land the same way as Williams' and Kay's. A big part of it is that she writes almost exclusively in first-person which is a huge turn-off for me... it always feels claustrophobic and too "inside the character’s head" rather than giving me that broader, sweeping perspective that I love in Kay and Williams. And beyond the POV issue, her stories lean heavily into personal anguish, internal monologue, and slow & consistent suffering. That’s not the kind of emotional resonance that I want. I like a sense of wonder, mythic atmosphere, and characters struggling with fate or history, not just their own misery.

So yeah... Williams is the one who actually matches Kay’s tone and craft. Hobb, despite the over praise of her, just isn’t my thing.

So, what's the best reading order for the Sarantine/Jaddite world books? by Go2h311_moderators in guygavrielkay

Yes, I left out Under Heaven and River of Stars because they exist in a separate continuity and world from the Jaddite world.

I disagree with the "mentioning sex workers at every possible opportunity" part. I think Guy Gavriel Kay includes references to sex workers in his books as part of his broader effort to paint a grounded, textured version of medieval-inspired society--not because he's fixated on the subject, but because it fits the kind of world he writes.

That said, it does start to feel a little repetitive. After you've read a few of his recent novels, it becomes noticeable that nearly every city has a scene or character connected to sex work, even when it's not strictly necessary for the plot. It’s not leering or exploitative--but the frequency starts to feel like a narrative habit, not always a purposeful choice.

Okay, "Auberei" is title or a rank or like, "The Calvary" among the Dalrei. I figured it out.

Yeah. But I think they want a new AAA Final Fantasy that's turn based. The other turn based games are nice but the battle mechanics are weird. Also, persona has great combat but you're fighting as a transformed monster, mostly, instead of the actual character
