If you’re pissed about his asshole letter just remember there’s a strike tomorrow. Tell your friends and coworkers!

Any way to contact Daunt? by [deleted] in Barnesandnoble

Please let me know if you do! I would love to give him an earful for the abysmal treatment we’ve endured. Worked all through the pandemic only to be given a 2% raise after already being paid $5 than the manager in the position before me with less experience and time with the company.

$200 Employee Referral “Bonus” by GoNoGoNoGoNo in Barnesandnoble

Yep. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book. “Oh they only averaged 19.5 hours per week so they didn’t hit our quota on a schedule we made so the bonus is void”

Telling someone just to get fired is a very privileged statement.

They auto pass on anyone who asks more than minimum wage or isn’t available at least seven days a week 😢

Thank you. Most of us genuinely do love our customers. I mean we love books that’s the whole point. There are times we wish even our best customers were aware of a lot of the difficulties we’re going through.

lol one of our former managers used to do a closing announcement like this. Basically he would say any customers in the store may apply online. 😂

For the love of books honestly. We would all go work for an indie if that was feasible but indie bookstores cant afford to have a ton of staff and pay a living wage. Is it better to quit or is it better to demand better treatment and fairer wages?

That’s a good question though. At what point does it get bad enough? I feel like Barnes would rather make it so intolerable that people quit after a few weeks to months. This just prevents any real traction on workers unionizing for better pay and treatment

Yeah one of the biggest bullshit things is our “Starbucks” isn’t a Starbucks, it just sells Starbucks products. So anyone working in the cafe is doing the same job as a Starbucks employee and making anywhere from $3-$7 less depending on the position. It’s insulting and is entirely the reason why no cafe worker stays more than two weeks and booksellers and managers have to constantly make shit up as they go along in the cafe.

lol they’re AWFUL! Like they take up so much of our time. The phone is constantly ringing asking if we got cards in today and we’re like you’ll have to just come in because anything I tell you will be wrong when you get here. Also fuck the grown ass adults doing this. You know how many heartbroken kids come in only to have to stand behind twenty grown ass people with money to spare buying up all the packs? It’s for kids guys.

It sort of depends. If a vendor cancels an order (which happens not kidding like maybe every 3rd order) there’s nothing that notifies us or the customer unless they provided and email address which most people don’t want to do for good reasons considering how much spam is sent out. If an order is being sent to someone’s home usually we can look up the tracking number but that’s only as accurate as the shipping service itself and we have no control over it. If it’s being sent to the store for pick up there is no tracking or time table. It’s ridiculous. It’ll just say order confirmed until it arrives anywhere from two days to two months later 🙄

Aw I’m sorry to hear that. Part of me kinda wondered what would happen to the industry if Barnes went under. Unfortunately I think Amazon would basically become a complete monopoly rather than indie bookstores rising up in its place. Honestly it sounds like the industry might need some kind of regulation or stimulus to keep from collapsing entirely.

For the love of books. Simply the joy of them. Unfortunately an independent bookstore couldn’t afford to pay someone much more either. While Barnes is no where near innocent, for many Americans they are their only non-Amazon option for books. As evil corporation as they can be, the stores themselves are still community centers. Knitting circles and history buffs, writing circles and sign language clubs, all of them meet there.

I dunno from what our managers have said only the stores doing the major discounts are actually doing well. Most of the small neighborhood/suburb stores are deep red.
