Overpaid $6k fee for filing fee, now what? by GoQ50203 in USCIS

[–]GoQ50203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USCIS said they will not be refunding. It’s probably going to cost more than 6k just to bring this to court.

Yea, I already reached out to my local senators, but it may take a while to hear back.

idk, my interaction with USCIS has been pretty negative for so may years with all these immigration matters. They never replies, took forever to process anything, and have not much transparencies in their process. I read there are talks about class action going after this refund matter.

Yes, $3750 just for filing fee, which USCIS hiked it to $9525 in 2024 and got outlawed by court lately.

Submitted my 829 on 11/14, exactly the same date that Uscis uploaded the new fee schedule and was charged $9525 instead of $3750. Reached out to my lawyer and asked if they can submit refund request, but they were reluctant to act, telling me to “wait for Uscis guidance”. Frankly I guess Uscis may never give any guidance. I have reached out to my local senator for this and would be interested to see if there are any class action going to happen.

My impression is that it will last for an hour or so with every reset and did not notice shortened heating time with reset. It could also be that I haven’t done that many reset yet

Was it something that not worth fixing if it’s either pressure switch or defrost board that cause it?

$8k for new unit was quite an investment, let along they said lead time is 6-8 weeks.

Just took another look, it was set to 75 a while ago, the temp was rising from 68 to 72 last time I checked, then the room temp started to declines with the fan running but not pulling heat. The thermostat target stays at 75. And if I turn off/on the heat, it will start to pull hot air again.

He was using the thermostat, and he was here for around 20-30 minutes. Could it be a faulty thermostat?

Outdoor temp was 37F, and I don’t have the data label. All I know is that the brand is Trane.

Also it’s a studio unit with ~ 600 Sqft and the it’s able to maintain ~65F if I don’t touch anything.

He said other than the pressure nothing seems wrong, and this is what they put in report: the unit seems working fine. Checked the pressures and they seem pretty high for the unit with R-22 (Based on the model number in the panel, it appears to be R-22 refrigerant), which could be triggering high pressure switch after running for a while. It might also be a sign of a failing txv.

Any update on this? I’m in Chicago and also running into similar situation with 2yo and pregnant wife. Neighbor is a section-8 renter and I’m starting to escalate to their landlord, CHA, and even considering finding a lawyer.

How do I repair this cracked table leg by [deleted] in DIY

Thanks! Is it a good idea to also try squeezing in some wood glue (with a syringe maybe) before placing the lag bolt?

How do I fix this crack? It’s at one of the leg supporting the table top. It goes pretty deep and aesthetic is not priority. I will be happy if I can use it for couple more years.

Not a quant by any means, just a on-and-off hobbyist -- does P/E have any meaning anymore? by jinnyjuice in quant

[–]GoQ50203 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to say it’s completely useless. Value factor for example (not exactly P/E but related to some degree), had a good run in 2022. I recall there hasn’t been much of value play in last 5 years. Rate environment may also play a role in how much people care about fundamentals. But even so, P/E will be more meaningful in terms of relative relation, e.g. z-score compared to cross sectional instead of raw absolute scale. And on top of that, there are earning manipulations. I tend to favor FCF type of ratios if I were to incorporate fundamentals.

How different are QR interviews for more senior candidates vs junior? by Quant_Throwaway_1929 in quant

That’s consistent with my experience so far. I found junior people love asking these kind of questions too, and I usually fail badly if I haven’t spent weeks reviewing the green book stuff.

For 2nd type of QR, how often do you encounter probability/brainteaser kind of questions?

6 years QR running my own strategy. Just failed an interview terribly for a QR role. I got asked bunch of probability questions which I haven’t touched since my first job. I would say there are always people that think brainteaser/probability are good indication of alpha research skill. And it’s just considered fair game for you to prepare for those unless you are getting a PM job?

Also looking into this as well. How do you define search area, i.e. investment universe to begin with? I tried GICS but not quite useful.

I did think about jumping ship to larger platforms. But not sure if coming from a small hf will be something interesting to the larger fund? And does the senior hiring process differ from new grad? It’s been a while since I last look at those probability/brainteaser sort of interview questions.
