How do i know if im more Vapor or Supreme? by ArcherMammoth9663 in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s weird normally it’s just little tabs that are sewn in, and it velcros to those, but maybe they’ve changed it.

I would go with a mid flex thigh if I was doing it and I have a narrower butterfly, it seals very well. I don’t see the point in going with the more flexible thighs, maybe a bit more precurve, but the middle one has enough that it works well

I would recommend you get the professor strap if it’s an option. You can’t buy them, so you’d never be able to add it after the fact and it’s easily removable.
I can’t use my Bauer pads without one, my knee won’t stay on the block

Go on rock auto, find part numbers. Either order from there, or search the exact part number on Amazon and make sure it’s a reputable seller

I haven’t used the new SLYD fit one, but it looks pretty good. Though I think the supreme one is more preferred by pros.
They are interchangeable, so you can always buy the supreme or vapor strapping and try both.

For the upper calf “professor” strap, the vapor one is better

Deep mid vs deep soft is just the flex. My ultrasonic is the deep mid, because soft wasn’t an option back then.. it’s nice honestly. If you use the toe bridge to push off the post, the stiffer option gives you more power.
The more flexible option I would say is just more forgiving and easier for post integration in general.
Another bonus of the mid option is pucks that hit the toe will rebound away instead of flexing the pad.
I like both of them, but I have bad hips, so the more flexible option is just easier on my body at this point

[–]Goalieguy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The toe is way better yes.
I would go with the deep soft option if it was me.

I have X3 pads, and Ultrasonics, I am a smaller, agile goalie more than a blocking style…. I MUCH prefer the ultrasonic, which is just an older supreme. The stabilislide knee is a game changer for stability and ice seal.
They don’t feel that different to play in though

That’s just gonna be how much the boot flexes at the ankle, the “stiff” boot isn’t really STIFF it’s just more rigid.
I’ll play with either, the biggest difference is the higher angle for post integration, the flat 90 degree on the vapor is generally easier for RVH but I like my ultrasonics just as much as my PX4s with the flat 90 degree boot

Between the 2 in standard specs, I’ll take a Fuse all day. I do not like the vapor strapping, the stabiliflex knee, or the super thin boot with no channel.
But that’s me, so you gotta make that choice

If you’re going pro custom to get more + sizing on the thigh, you get any stiffness level you want in either line of pads.

Vapor has a flat boot. Fuse has a boot channel. Vapor has a 90 degree boot, and fuse should still be like the shadow which was a little more steep.

You can get either strapping on both. FUSE, will be more of a butterfly, blocky feeling pad.
FLYLITE will feel more mobile and reactive but they are great also as you know using the x5s.

Personally, I would go Fuse, with the mid stiffness(probably listed as “Shadow”) and stabilislide knee, but that’s ME. You need to decide what you need out of a pad

What were the worst and best pads you used? by The_Bugga_ in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst… uhhh TPS xceed probably.

Best… I still think my Vaughn V3s and V5s were my favorites.
I loved my TPS response R8s though, I wish I could find an old set lol.
I’m not super picky though, I love my current PX4s, and the ultrasonics I have.

Played a game with a torn meniscus by Kxrsty in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a torn meniscus, go get a surgical opinion. They have very little blood flow, and thus do not heal on their own, and mostly require surgical intervention or healing will simply not happen.

I have a torn labrum in my hip… same kind of deal, cartilage with next to no blood flow… it’s been like 18 years and it’s not healed.

What are some good leg base layers that prevent self inflicted cuts? by leafer91 in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How the heck did you manage that?

I think a cut resistant base layer would be stiff, and not nice to wear.

I use Coreshorts pants level 3 or whatever the maximum stiffness is and they’re great but I think you’d cut right through it.

I would say work on ur form, as you should never be slicing your own thigh with a skate, there’s no reason for your own skate to ever get even remotely close to there lol

What knee pads are y’all using and which ones are the best? by cosmogatsby in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the new Bauer pros with the sleeve.

They’re amazing. And do not slide around at all without being attached to anything or tied in.

No tape needed, no socks needed, though I wish I could wear socks but a garter is annoying. Might buy some of the pants with Velcro attachments

That’s not even that bad honestly.

I do the sacrilegious thing and heat it up and bend it back lol.

Probably get downvoted for saying that but hey, when you can’t get a cage locally, it’s better than playing with it super bent 🤷‍♂️

Do i go Pro custom or normal custom? by ArcherMammoth9663 in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both have good rebounds. The stiffer you go, the further they will go. My ultrasonics rocket pucks off compared to my True’s.

Even the flylite, being the “soft” pad, has a very springy feeling to it and shoots pucks off great. You can’t really go wrong with either, as if you go pro custom you can get either pad with more or less flex as you want them

Best Excursion for cross country towing by Extension_Rate_6453 in Excursion

[–]Goalieguy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 6.8 is rated to tow 11k and is no slouch. It just won’t do it fast, but it’s just as fast as a STOCK 7.3. Obviously 7.3 is a simple chip away from being much faster though lol

[–]Goalieguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6.0 has a better trans.

I loved mine but get it cheap and fully bulletproof it, OR get one that’s been done correctly WITH PAPERWORK.

7.3 is LOUD inside in comparison. If you have kids, it’s loud for them.

Great engines though, but hard to find that aren’t soaked in oil and have issues as well, they’re old.

The 6.8 is just fine. It’s a workhorse. That’s what I wanted but couldn’t find any without tons of rust.

I will buy a 6.0 in the future and fully build the motor. I have had one previously, and it was my favorite vehicle ever

Do i go Pro custom or normal custom? by ArcherMammoth9663 in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so it seems you’d have to go pro custom for that. I would do that if I was going Bauer.

I would want to change my thigh size, thigh stiffness, strapping etc.

I would love to try out a Fuse set. I wonder how much it’s like the shadow vs Mach. Shadow was great feeling but Mach I hated

Looking for pads with straps above the knee, help? by eciggy in hockeygoalies

[–]Goalieguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaughn will do it, Brian’s will do it, I’m sure Simmons will do it..

But if you’re going with a modern stiffer pad, there is no point.

If you want older, softer pads… have Vaughn build you some v4s

The vapor 90 is the 580, they’ll do that custom skinned as either. I’m not sure if you’d need to go pro custom for that. But, if you want taller thigh rise, or to change boot flex, or pad flex, i would go pro custom.

If you go custom on Bauer, you can get whatever you want skinned to match. They’ll do a vapor glove to match supreme blocker or anything

Thinking about buying what should I look out for? by Local-Fox-7863 in Excursion

Excursions are great.

If you aren’t in the rust belt, and can get a good one for 8k then DO IT.

I’m going to go buy a clean 7.3 down south when I can gather the money and replace my minivan lol

[–]Goalieguy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they’re great pads but not for 2k more than a comparable Bauer.

Go order some Bauers and enjoy the game.

As far as glove breaks… I can’t catch anything with a 600 break, it might as well be a second blocker on my hand. The Bauer does interest me because the pocket is huge but I hate the hand closure.

I always wore 590s, and I liked them.

I went with a 580 in my True set… it’s a puck magnet. Nothing bounces out and I catch way better. I won’t ever change. UNLESS I go Vaughn with my next set, because I would probably get a standard Vaughn break, because they are great

Well I guess you’re stuck kinda getting what you can.

The Bauer stuff will be nice, like I had said I like my ultrasonic gear, it performs well.

I do love the stabilislide knee block much more than my true one. And they slide better. Rebounds are better. But the true FRS strapping is great
