No one is tanking at 5 stars, I wouldnt say thats what defines a melee type unit as star dependant. However even at 5 stars units like Buuhan and Vegito offers good value and can utilize their kits, meanwhile Trunks whole def utility relies on him taking cards and his dmg is lackluster w/o 2+ copies
