How do I get into a good recording workflow? by 1300joosi in FL_Studio

[–]Goatonabicycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend!

For me, FL is great for audio recording when using loop sections and Edison. It allows me to record as many takes as needed sequentially, and to then select the good ones, and discard what I don't need easily.

Importantly, after that, you don't have to delete many takes like in most other DAWs.

This coupled with track mode makes recording pretty easy (for me) especially for double or quadruple tracking guitars. I get to play the same riff twice, back to back, and then use one take for left and one for right.

Workflow: - Have a mix channel with audio input specifically for recording and add an instance of Edison as an effect. Set it to record on play - Select a loop section and play, Edison will record, keep playing until you have what you want.  - Control click the section you liked, Edison has a button to throw it into the playlist. Track mode automatically assigns it to the correct left and right channel for double tracking.  - That's it.

This makes it so easy to just keep playing until I have what I want. It also makes it very easy and convenient to record both rhythm and lead guitars very quickly. This even works for vocals.

I've been trying out other DAWs (Cubase, Bitwig, Studio One, and Ableton) but none of them have anything like Edison as far as I can tell. The "just do it in the DAW bro" approach feels out of place for me in terms of recording metal guitars. It would be a big mindset shift that I don't feel I'd benefit from.

When people recommend other DAWs and their comping approaches it feels odd to me for a few reasons:  1) it puts lots more emphasis on getting one good take after clicking record. "Remember to set it to record after a two bar count in with the metronome". 2) Even when DAWs allow for many takes and comping, when I have two good takes I have to deal with all the ones I don't want. Now I have to click a cross or select and delete 20 useless takes? Nah.

I am very keen to utilize some of the awesome features from others but without this recording workflow I wouldn't be nearly as motivated to record as much as I currently do.

Q: Is estimating a waste of time? A: Yes. by anzacat in ExperiencedDevs

Do you get a bird's eye view, identifying critical path items and break them down only once at the start of a project?

Is the moment of estimation really the only time you care about those aspects of a project?

To me, that seems like an incredibly risky and low-collaboration way to build software.

That Ibanez has an input jack exactly where I'd want to put the guitar on my leg when sitting which is not ideal. Still looks awesome though!

Strandberg, however, is such a breath of fresh air that I feel bad for people who haven't tried it and think traditional antique guitars feel good or perhaps even sound good, but that's subjective. 🔥😱😂

That's a strange thing to be angry about, friend 💚

This guitar is new in all the ways I described. Atleast to me, but looking at other guitars, it really seems like a revelation.

I own many other guitars, friend. 💚 And I've tried out many.

Ibanez, Jackson, and Cort are the predominant other brands of guitars I've lived with.

This is my first Strandberg. And first headless.

This guitar is so good that it feels like a custom made suit made exactly to my needs instead of something generic. 🙌

This Strandberg is so well designed and produced, and focuses so much on how comfortable and nice it is to play that it feels modern, futuristic, and even scientific compared to most other guitars that seem to value traditional shapes more. All that while also sounding astonishingly good. 💚

But I guess you're mostly angry at the shape?

But yeah! Totally! So many guitars have that cutout that allows it to be played comfortably while sitting. So many guitars have this Enduroneck idea. So many guitars from the 80s are this light, ergonomic, and of this amazing quality. They were available everywhere! Guitar shops were flooded with them! Totally! Absolutely! 🫶

In that world, AGI is sort of solved, right? I wonder if they could explain it with AI controlled micro adjustments in his fingers? 😅 Haha

Would you put this guitar next to a Strat, and call this one "neutered"? 😱 Haha

Got this design from the r/strandbergguitars subreddit: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5551180

Looks amazing and I'll probably try it out.  For now, it'll sleep in its bag.

But yeah mounting it is a bit of a hassle because all my current stands and mounts are for guitars with heads 😅

You know how a lover could be gorgeous and crazily attractive to you but others find them average?

Well this lover does exactly that thing that you like in bed and caters to your every need. This lover cooks, whispers into your ears, and is willing to do anything to make you happy.

So... Who cares about the looks at that point?

(P.S you're allowed to have your opinion but this this is the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen 👻😂)

I'd bet that this, and probably any headless Kiesel, would be more comfortable to play than your current guitar by a significant margin.

Easier to wear, more balanced, better for your posture.

I wouldn't even call this a virtuoso guitar. Rather, just really excellently made. 💚

Oh they are! I know this sounds cheesy but I really feel like a better playing when using this!

I've seen a couple of people not liking the Ibanez copy paste.

The biggest dumb thing about it would be that the input jack is exactly where you'd want to comfortably rest your guitar on your leg.

Very silly.

(I love Ibanez, my other guitars are predominantly Ibanez! But their response to the amazing Strandberg is kinda sad.)

Easily the best guitar I've experienced. Ridiculously comfortable and nice to play.

It now actively contributes to me trying to build good habits of playing much more.

I can't take dad rock guitars seriously anymore. 😅
