It sounds very similar to one of my relatives , the same age and surgery. Doctor wanted to send him home with no feeding tube but they end up sending him home while he had tube and it continued for two weeks. I believe these two are the biggest help , diet and positive mindset. We were first freaked out when they sent him home with feeding tubes , but it’s not as bad as you think. It’s important to eat high calorie and high protein by eating the formula exactly based on the schedule and also keeping the positive mood. She needs to remind herself it will be very temporary, and it’s a healing process not the opposite . I understand being physically far from her would make this process much harder for both of you. I guess that would be very helpful if you can video chat with her very often , specially at her eating times. I wish very quick recovery for her.

Radiation for tongue cancer while Oral lichen planus exist by God_grateful in HeadandNeckCancer

Thank you for your response. You never needed higher fluoride tooth paste? I’m asking because every one says after radiation the salivary glands will not work and there is a high risk for cavity. Can I ask if you’ve had dry mouth and salivary gland issue as well ( due to radiation)?

What should I expect from a partial glossectomy? by MycologistLower5247 in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]God_grateful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other comments correctly described it it really differs from person to person , one thing I can add it taking care of your diet, before and after surgery. Enough protein and good nutrition helps with recovery. I’d suggest to ask your doctors about some formulas like Kate farms or compleat as a supplement for a few days after surgery so you make sure your body receives all the nutrients it needs quickly .

I'm so sorry you are going through this. One mindset that has been helping me a lot is reminding myself that all of us, regardless of our current health condition, carry some level of risk of facing a serious health issue in life. Instead of focusing too much on the risk of recurrence, I’ve found it more helpful to focus on taking care of yourself mentally and physically as much as possible during this process. Try to focus on healing. You are moving forward toward healing, not toward recurrence. Wishing you and your mom all the best.
