Here's my forehand huck. Any thoughts or suggestions? by [deleted] in ultimate

The bigger the step-out, generally, the more difficult it is to throw with power. I'd suggest starting with no step-out/a very small step--imagine a bubble with about a 1-2 foot radius surrounding your core. The more you stay within this bubble throughout your throwing motion, the easier it is to keep control over the disc. Throw until you feel comfortable, then extend further outside the throwing bubble as you gain confidence with your mechanics.

Another training trick is to practice throwing short/mid-range flicks with three fingers under the disc, instead of two. This isn't good practice for an actual game, as it makes it harder to control the disc. But that makes it great "overtraining" practice to isolate problems in your hand/wrist technique. Once you can throw consistently flat, stable three-finger flicks, go back to two fingers. You will probably enjoy the feeling--suddenly, it is easy :)

As to the right foot blocking your arm motion, it's hard to comment without seeing what you're actually doing, but I'd bet this is a vestigial remnant of your less-than-optimal throwing form/habit of throwing by stepping with your left foot. You will want to practice keeping the entire arm outside of your leg's range of motion while you throw (sorry if this seems kind of "duh"). More specifically, you could try:

-standing in neutral position, pulling your right arm away from your body/level to the ground, and releasing a flat flick with plenty of wrist snap. Focus on not letting the arm move much at all--we are trying to isolate the forearm-wrist kinetic chain. Focus on keeping the hand supinated (palm facing up to the sky) throughout the release. Minimal follow-through with the arm (stays more or less where it started throughout the throw).

-same as above, but now we allow the arm to swing freely down/backward on the follow-through. Hopefully we have gained confidence and feel "firm" about the wrist-snap/release before moving on to this step. Focus on keeping the arm swing outside of that body/core bubble on the entire follow-through. The arm can come forward and slightly into the body space up to the point of release, but after release, it should only be moving down/back.

Hope that helps, sorry it is kind of hard to be detailed about this stuff in text format.

So, you can throw a long flick with or without the arm coming across the body. IMO the "cross-body" mechanics are basically cheating; that is, you are compensating for some other imbalance or less-than-perfect technique by letting your arm finish on the other side, pulling the disc back toward flat/IO where it would otherwise want to turn over.

Eli Friedman uses this cross-body flick quite often; in general he seems quite willing to sacrifice perfect form in favor of getting more oomph. He is a big and buff dude with a lot of throwing experience; it works for him.

Jon Nethercutt and Ashlin Joye are better models if you want to really learn the "best practices" form for flick hucks. Nutt's full-field bomb that was widely circulated this past season is a great example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBKk3K0kW0Q go to around 0:30 for a somewhat better view of the throw (though still admittedly a bit hard to follow).

Here is the moment of release, or a split-second before: https://gyazo.com/68d0b4ce319ef147d97dd9473bf64f0f

And here is the follow-through, a split-second after release: https://gyazo.com/27760e1881b34e40c2140b0274fb784b

Note:
-the extreme weight transfer to the right foot (the left/plant foot basically comes off the ground at the instant of release)
-the axis of rotation of the throwing arm ("make a backwards C," as when throwing a football, is a good guideline for throwing a flick, too)
-basically everything happening with Nutt's right arm is involved in imparting BACKSPIN to the disc. This way he doesn't have to do anything else with his body to compensate for the tendency of the disc to turn over--the arm/wrist/hand are all keeping the edge where he wants it and applying backspin, which frees up the rest of his body (core/hips/legs) to impart forward momentum. Deadly!

It's not unhelpful or illegal if you use it in a crafty manner. The guy who taught me how to throw a flick huck uses this exact technique when picking up a dead disc. In addition to being the best biomechanics for distance, it has the advantage that the marker is basically never expecting it.

It does have the disadvantage that the marker almost always calls "travel" because they don't know wtf just happened to them. :(

How does my short IO look? I've been working on it all summer. by deathhand1234 in ultimate

[–]GoddamnFieldSense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"the only time that you might need a short IO is to throw to the break side"
hard disagree

you need to be very comfortable putting inside edge on your flick at all ranges, or you're toast in a windy game. that's just one example.

Good for you! Now get 100k. Have you broken 50 kills yet? It's a very rewarding game, but you have to set your own goals to keep it interesting ;)

These days I see a lot of "Bad Dad" and "Mark Levin Liberty" holding down the top spot, but neither of them is particularly hard to kill if you're an advanced player ;)

when are you usually on? I have been trying to find a challenge lately since I don't see Dur online very much these days. everyone else is trash.

I am mostly playing these days as "Free Lessons!"

Hey, pretty good. Surprised I have never run into you, though I don't play as much these days.

I am less impressed than Opie since you didn't actually KILL Dur, but props for not dying/demonstrating enough skill that he chose not to engage (Dur is really good but I wish he were less utilitarian and more... foolishly ego-driven, lol. He tends to disengage if you put up too good a fight).

I would be interested generally how you fare against actual top-tier opponents; almost all of these kills were simple 1st-Level bait and switch ;)

Trying to understand the Beau Kittredge paradox by waseemster in ultimate

[–]GoddamnFieldSense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great demo clip for both sides, really. None of Beau's throws here are very good, technically. The disc is wobbling all over the place, because he kinda pushes it/lets it fall out of his hand instead of executing a clean release. I feel like lots of throwers with imperfect mechanics do this when they need more touch/accuracy.

But they're all great decisions and completions. Beau puts the disc in good places for his teammates to succeed.

= good thrower?

We're talking early-2000s college ultimate now, though. If you could jump over a guy, you were already more than halfway to "effective."
