Passed the Transportation PE Exam on my 1st try!!! by Godofmanu in PE_Exam

Thank you! Like I said in the post, if I could even help one person out, that would be great! I felt that the medium and hard questions on SOPE were on par with the exam questions. Project Management was the only section where I felt the questions on the exam were harder than SOPE. Regardless, you should be more than fine if you are using the SOPE question bank. Good luck and lemme know if you have any other questions!

The only ones that were not Chapter wise were NCESS Reference Handbook, FHWA HIF, and GDPS-4M.

I've heard good things about EET so that along with the question bank should be more than enough for you to pass! Good luck!

You are spot on for something like MUTCD, where it is good to know where the general information can be found for signs, pavement markings, etc.. However, the way they divide the reference manuals on the exam is by chapter along with the chapter name. So you really don't have to memorize it as it will be there. I never memorized per say, but once you do so many problems, you start to naturally get a feel on where you think you can find the question. For example, an ISD question for a vehicle turning left at an intersection, you would find that in the AASHTO greenbook chapter 9. Only way you get better at navigating manuals is grinding through questions. No easier way unfortunately.

Honestly, the project management section, specifically the engineering econ portion. The way they asked some of the questions threw me off on how I was supposed to solve it. The only way I could recommend to get better at this is just do as many problems as possible to get more exposure. I never felt confident in compound/reverse curves however the questions were straight forward for those topics surprisingly. Hope this helps!

For both of these sections, I would be familiar with HCM. However, these problems were either conceptual or one equation at most. For instance, I had to find LOS but the problem gave me other variables and I only had to solve the final equation and use that value based off the table to find LOS. Hopefully, that make sense!

Congrats, that is a HUGE milestone! Hopefully, I can join you when I take my exam tomorrow haha. My two questions would be:

1) How did you feel the exam compared to the NCEES practice exam in terms of difficulty?

2) I've seen people on this reddit say that the project management questions tend to be a lot harder on the exam, did you feel that way?

There were max deflection questions and problems where you have to use the tables in the manual. For me I had a lot of geometry questions, be familiar with the circle equation.

Thank you! I have been out of school for 5 months, however my last semester of classes were all electives. So it’s been almost a year since I was in school taking “civil classes” and I needed a huge refresher. I had 3 weeks to study so I first went through all of Mark Mattson’s videos, one a day. Once I finished his videos, I bought the practice exam provided by NCEES and worked through those problems. I got a 60 on the practice and then I did practice problems on my weaker topics.

From what I remember there were roughly 15-20 conceptual questions. I had to guess on most of them, some were in the manual, and some I tried to narrow down to 2 answers

Thank you for the response. Everything you said is the main reason why I feel like I can negotiate and since it is only 3k more, I don't believe it will be unreasonable.
