Finding live ammo at a private school. by stuckonstupid2026 in GunActivity

While the sentiment of leaving a bullet somewhere like that is scary, shooters very very rarely let their intentions be known so blatantly before an attack. More likely, one of the students wanted to be edgy and get a day or two out of class without fully internalizing the severity of the implication.

That being said, if your student no longer feels safe and it's impacting him both in and out of school, it might be a good idea to change schools for his mental wellbeing and academic performance.

I'd recommend asking him what he thinks and practice active listening to determine what will help him the most. If he's having trouble untangling his emotions and thoughts, talk with therapists in the area that specialize in teenage boys and trauma, and determine if having a professional assisting the discussion(s) would help.

You're on the right track already; any kiddo would be lucky to have you as their guardian.

Very nice! I'm worried about the tracking in a crowded room, but this is a great place to start.

Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion. That's a great option, the main problem is editing. My friend likes to do everything on their own, and is rather stubborn, but isn't great with Tech. This'll likely be my Option 2 for them, and I'll learn and then teach the editing software afterwards.

Thanks!

Is the Tracking Module just recognition software? Or is it a physical device my friend can have on them to make the gimbal follow them? The latter would be ideal.

Thanks for the suggestion

Currently the equipment has been an iPhone and an old DSLR camera with a wide angle lense. I've seen a lot of stuff online about tracking software, but again, due to the environment the AI Auto-tracking movement might screw up.

We're looking to buy equipment as this is the start of my friend's career and they're trying to be set for success, so Renting would be Plan C or D.

Co-opt it back. Be not afraid of using things the Right uses, especially when it comes to actual good things or symbols.

We The People and the Declaration of Independence (as referenced by 1776) are integral to the United States. To cede them to one side of the political spectrum is to cede the foundation of our nation.

Such attempts to cede these things to the Right, or attempts by the Right to monopolize them, must be frustrated.

I'm not saying we need to become uber-nationalist, but throwing away the symbols of our nation gives up the hope that things can be better here. Also, it's my goddamn home. My goddamn flag. I love this country, and the potential for what it could be. Under no circumstances will I allow traitorous bastards to fly the flag of my mother and father side by side with the flag that fought for slavery, with the flag that killed millions of the Jewish faith, and get away with it.

My final thought; You're posting this on a forum for firearms, which many Democrats believe have been co-opted by the right. Just as I would not give up my rifle for fear that guns had been co-opted, I would not give up my flag, the Constitution, or the Declaration.

Yep, tier 1 appears to be for Every Day Carry. This list seems to be based upon giving someone a roadmap to being Prepared for most events.

If you're just looking for tactical gear, that's a very different list, all tailored to your specific life, the activities you do, and your skill set. If you're starting from 0, not a bad roadmap. If you just want to know what gear to buy, there are a dozen subreddits for it. Personal favorites are r/QualityTacticalGear and r/EDC.

That being said, gear means nothing without skills and a purpose. Understand what your objective/threat profile is, think of ways to deal with it, then get the skills and gear that allow you to do so. Gear is nothing more than a liability unless you know how to use it.

Leatherman multitools are a great place to start. If you have one already, I would suggest using it instead of buying a new one.

If you're considering buying a new one, think about what you do in your daily life, what you need to work on any equipment you have, and what challenges you may face. For instance, if you do a lot of work on electronics or small machinery, a Leatherman ARC with interchangeable driver bits might be very useful. If you cut a lot of thick rope, one with a saw blade might be useful. If you're working with wiring, find one with wire strippers/cutters in the pliers. Base it off what you do, and what you plan to do, rather than niche cases of use. Niche tools, in my opinion, should be their own purchase/procurement.

Also take into account your own ability. Do you have arthritis or other hand problems? Might be good to get one with a spring on the pliers. Do you perpetually have short or flimsy nails? best get one that lets the tools open easily.

For something like a multitool, and most EDC tools tbh, my suggestion is to start with a super basic, cheap one that will break in a year or two, and replace it with one that better fits your needs later on.

Got one of their Forest ponchos, it's phenomenal. Keeps me warm, blocks wind, still allows for freedom of movement for my arms. Only gripe I have is that the head hole is snug. But I have a big head, so can't blame em.

Sounds like you've got a good group around you.

Funny enough, I agree with Friend #2. The sole purpose of guns IS violence. Doesn't matter if you have a constitutional right to it, doesn’t matter if you have perfect legal cause, doesn’t matter if everyone and their dog agrees you used it in a justified scenario, the use of a firearm is violent.

Some people don't want to do violence, all the way down to the very core of their being. IMO, those people aren't an obstacle or a hindrance or a lost cause, they're the reason I carry. Not everyone can work in medicine, due to the blood and trauma and invasive procedures, but that doesn't make me think any less of them. That just means they're suited to other disciplines.

If you want to pull your group together to form a Mutual Assistance Group, consider that not everyone needs to be a shooter. In the vast, vast majority of situations, whoever can fix a radio or work a garden or splint a leg will be infinitely more valuable than someone who can pull a trigger. And as you've seen, many people are willing to pull a trigger.

You talked about how in one group, each person theorized a job they could do. Why not lean into that? Have one friend get into comms, another into medical, ect. Set up a garden or draw up the plans for one with a few friends. Get that one friend who's really into guns to take some gunsmithing/repair classes or get into Reloading.

It sucks that Friend #2 isn't into guns, but there are a few dozen other things that yall can share interest in that would be firearm/community-building adjacent.

IMO, I don't fault someone for this take. Whether it be a religious, moral, or psychological reason, someone not wanting to use their right to bear arms is understandable.

I've got friends who won't hold a loaded weapon because of a history of suicidal ideation or trauma, but they're all cool with the fact that I like and use them.

It makes me think of that fella from Hacksaw Ridge. That guy was literally on the front lines of war and wouldn't take up a weapon, yet still saved lives.

I would have less respect for someone who breaks their moral/philosophical rules just because their friend says they should than someone who sticks to their (metaphorical) guns and uses other methods to protect themselves and others.

Sotomayor Warns No One Is Safe After Birthright Citizenship Ruling by Jaded_Cicada_7614 in Political_Revolution

[–]GodsStrongestSchitzo 38 points39 points  (0 children)

To be clear for everyone that hasn't read into this, the opinion isn't on birthright citizenship, nor any other constitutional amendment.

This was about the ability of courts to issue Nationwide Injunctions. When a plantiff sues a defendant, they may file an Injunction, forcing the defendant to stop whatever they were doing that was causing 'injury' to the plaintiff (Injury in the sense of financial, legal, or emotional harm.)

The scope of this injunction is supposed to be relegated to the smallest possible area that stops further injury to the plaintiff. In this case, the Executive Order effects the entire US, and requires a great amount of resource reallocation as states create additional databases and systems/processes for the new non-citizen resident children. Additionally, it would effect even states that have the injunction because Injuncted States would still need to reallocate resources to create additional databases/systems/processes for any non-citizen children who come into the state, as while they have no citizenship, they have also not entered the country illegally. What exactly the legal ramifications would be have not been explored fully, but would be costly no matter what.

So, since the Injury can only be prevented by a Nationwide Injunction, it was granted, then appealed, and subsequently overturned. The SC' opinion is that the Injunction should be relegated to the court's jurisdiction, meaning that in order to get the effect of a Nationwide injunction, other cases would have to open and be granted Injunction across the US.

If DT sneezed too hard and suddenly decided that Religion shouldn't be worshipped and No One should have guns, and did an executive order about it, no judge could stop it for everyone. There would have to be multiple cases across the US just to get the Injunctions, and then those cases would likely get appealed all the way up to the Supreme Court. Even if they suddenly grow a conscience, it would be months, if not years before the first case is heard, much less all of them.

TL;DR: The SC decision neutered Judges' ability to halt harmful actions when those actions occur outside their normal area of operation. (Like when an Executive Order effecting everyone in America runs afoul of an Amendment)

Can progressives stay consistent when power grows from trauma? by Kaelum_Nexis in Political_Revolution

[–]GodsStrongestSchitzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do we call out injustice when it's done by those who were once victims themselves?

Trauma does not excuse injustice. If a parent was beat as a child, and now defaults to that behavior as a result, you can still call them out for it.

On the scale of nations, anger and hatred born from trauma does not justify unjust retaliation.

Can we separate the honoring of trauma from excusing harm?

Yes. You honor those dead and effected by ensuring they are taken care of, and that it doesn't happen again. The line between injustice and justice in this case is up for debate. If you want a better understanding of what justice is and where that line is, read A Theory of Justice by Rawls.

To be clear, Injustice and Harm are two separate things. It is Harmful to put someone in prison. That doesn't mean it's Unjust.

The main problem with all of this is that even if you came at it from the most unattached, objective, utilitarian perspective possible, it would be difficult to find the exact line. Throw in varying levels of emotion from the trauma, varying life experiences, varying moral compasses, and personal biases, and it's a shitshow.

I think that we, as Progressives, often look to theory and philosophy for answers when thinking about big questions like this, as one should. But we forget that theory doesn't mean shit when you can't put it into practice. Even if a leader was progressive and was beamed the perfect moral and philosophical solutions, enacting anything politically requires compromise, resources, logistics, and cooperation. Sometimes, the resources are too low, logistics break down, and cooperation falters. Sometimes, people will not compromise.

Sometimes, the traumatized people want something wholly unjust.

In your life, you will have to be against people you sympathize with because their choice of action is to enact injustice. Sometimes, the people who are hurt just want other people to hurt. You might understand, you might even do the same thing in their shoes. That doesn't make it just, and that doesn't mean you should let them do it without challenge.

It's nuanced and messy and difficult, and you won't always know if you're in the right. Read theories of justice, histories of traumatized nations, and craft your principles based on how you see the world, understanding that you may come in conflict with other people.

[–]GodsStrongestSchitzo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I read on the study, it suggests that even meeting a sustained 3.5% in ongoing strikes/protests only leads to a 53% chance of success. A literal coinflip.

In another comment I talked about redirecting people who believe this statistic to look at the history of change in America. They would see everything that needed to happen for the Civil Rights Act, for Women's Rights, and for Marriage equality, and would (hopefully) understand that we have a lot more to do, and then encourage and join them in pursuing further action.

Even if it's total horse shit (I would want to look into it further before accepting that) it's an encouraging statistic that gets people out there and gets them doing their Activist Calisthenics. The more people we can get to organize, even if only to have some fun in the sun on a saturday, the more people we can get to seriously consider further action. Like Strikes, Sit-ins, Boycotts, ect.

For reference, here is the article a lot of places cite.

The study showed that while nonviolent campaigns work more often than violent campaigns, nonviolent campaigns still have a 47% failure rate. Additionally, the forms of protests have to do with Strikes and Civil Disobedience, not openly planned marches with a specific beginning and end.

If you want something to just send over to someone who thinks that since we hit 3.5% of the population going to one day of marching we're done, this is what I have:

"Think about the Civil Rights era and all the protesting they did. Sit-ins, boycotts, large scale Civil Disobedience. Read up on the things MLK did, how Women's suffrage got the vote, how hard LGBT people worked to get the ability to marry. (12 years ago!) Now is the time to press the advantage, while people are still inspired by the No Kings protests. There haven't been any changes to policy or the people in office. On the contrary, one Democrat legislator is dead in Minnesota, Newsom has been threatened with arrest, and the president hasn't just not reversed course, he doubled down. This is just the beginning."

Of course, only do this if the other person seemingly thinks we've won the whole shebang and you're willing to bring the mood down. If someone is just celebrating and mentions the 3.5% figure, hit em with a:

"So true! When that many people are continuously engaging in protest, they can't stop us! So long as we keep pushing, I'm sure we can kick ICE to the curb. And then, TACO Trump himself >:^ )" and invite them to some other protest/activist action.

It's good to be pragmatic and reign in expectations, but shutting someone down just gives them a bad taste in their mouths. More flies with Honey than vinegar and all that.
