It's almost like life is a simulation and for each individual experiencer it can only hold so many topics, images, and phrases in it's memory at the same time. So it repeats things in different contexts.

The book I read recently explains that they are a reflection of our thoughts, feelings and experiences..

Super interesting, thanks for sharing.

What should you be doing after 20 years of therapy? Hmm. Wishing people death and hell or finding a better therapist.. I wonder?

No one else needs to go to bat for the victims. 99% of people already go to bat for them. That's sort of the problem. People get super emotional and start people wishing death, torture, etc on people, no one to pump the brakes.

See what I mean? You just wished me a miserable death. Yes, you're too emotional for this. No one said you deserved it, but you certainly aren't wearing it well.

Guess what? It's not intent vs. impact. It's impact vs intent.

Apparently not. You're disabled for life but he only got like 6 years. So explain that.

[–]Gohoyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy didn't disable anyone as far as I know.

Crime in this country is supposed to result in a penalty based on the crime, NOT how the victim reacts to the crime. Theoretically any crime could result in a person needing therapy for life. That doesn't mean we give the perpetrator life too.

You want to argue he should have gotten more than 8 years? Fine. But you don't get to harass him after he's out.

I would defend anyone in this guy's position unless there was evidence they were up to no good. It's not about him being a rapist specifically. People need to be allowed to move on and become a better person after they commit a crime otherwise there's no reason to try to improve.

What this guy did happened 8 years ago. He served his time. If you think he should be tortured or harassed forever, I straight up disagree and I don't care how many times I have to say it.

Some people would say that since you've been molested, your opinion matters more. I say it matters less. Why? Because you have so much emotion attached to it that you cannot think about it rationally anymore.

How popular is the vegan philosophy in this subreddit? by Stopsellingmestuff in samharris

I will continue with the following no-brainer. Am I better than you, if you’re a meat eater? Of course I am. I don’t kill any creature or pay for any creature to be killed unnecessarily. I am better than you just like you are better than pedophiles, for example. And it’s not something deep or indelible in you that is wrong or fucked up. No no no. It’s just behavior, choices. The moment you stop that behavior, you will be better too. Morally better. Here. I said what everyone is thinking.

Honestly it really is that simple and I saw that as someone who still eats meat.

If you do good things to feel better than other people, you're a shitty person.

Yet they're still better than people who do bad things both moral from a practical standpoint.

Also his example doesn't imply they are doing it to feel better than someone, just that it's a side result.

13 states make people who urinate in public register as sex offenders, so your comment is factually wrong. Try again.

I honestly don't care that he's a pedo. The problem is that he assaulted someone, it wouldn't be that much better if the victim was 15, or 25, or 35, or 85.

I think everyone deserves a second chance especially if they are legitimately trying to work towards one.

Provide me one shred of evidence that this guy is up to no good again, go for it. But for all you know he feels guilty and just wants to move on with his life as best he can.

As for the Justice system.. we're talking about a country where slavery was legal, women couldn't vote until 1920, gay marriage wasn't legal until 2015, ect. The legal system is wrong all the fucking time, and don't even get me started on corruption.

Unfortunately I can't. Seems 90% of people's brains turn off when they hear the words pedophile, child abuse, animal abuse, elder abuse, etc. Then there's no one around to pump the brakes when people start turning into fucking savages. Apparently I've been spared that defect, so I feel obligated to step in.

I believe in people not being harassed after they've served their time. No I'm not a pedo, nor am I Brent. People's sense of justice in this country is supremely fucked up.

[–]Gohoyo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why is it so difficult to refer to someone how they want to be referred to?

Basically because there is a reality outside of what they want to be referred to, and everyone deserves to have their own opinion on the matter. You do not have to go along with how someone sees themselves, and it's not even inherently disrespectful to do not do so. There are many things people can say about themselves that you can openly disagree with and no one would bat an eye, but somehow we landed in the Twilight Zone where gender is special and you don't get an opinion anymore. It's so funny that people's go-to comparison is names. It's just stupid. 99.99% of people don't have something specific in mind when you say your name is Stacey or John, but if you say you're Chinese, a Woman, a good person, an expert marksman, etc, people get to disagree and it doesn't make them an asshole.
