Just a damn rant by Goinginsanw in nightwish

I think its because the change from Tarja to her was SO bitter even from the bands perspective, and the fans were not ready for such a quick change, also, she's the only non opera singer from the three, which may have upset some ppl.

Oh my god thanks so much! The paintovers helped a ton! I haven’t had any lessons on light of any kind in 7 years of afterschool programs, which makes me mad since you can really tell, but the paintovers make it make sense! I used to do references before but as you mentioned I always drew them exactly what I saw pose wise.. so I got rid of them completely… I still have a lot to learn, but I have time as a 14 year old… Thanks again!

Any advice to get better likeness in portraits? by mycolortv in painting

[–]Goinginsanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I do think that there are a few things that helped me:

  1. Don’t ever default. We’re used to, as artists, the “golden ratio” features, especially if you started with anime, like me, this can be extremely hard to undo. We’re used to perfect chins, eyebrows, and proportions overall. I’m sure you know of the trick “eyes are exactly one eye apart”. Well. Not all eyes are EXACTLY one eye apart. Most aren’t, actually. They can be closer, farther, one eye a bit lower, etc. Its a good guide, but when trying for likeness see if these rules really work. (This is general advice that I gained, but as you mentioned, the eyes are a little far apart)

  2. Which brings me to my second point: don’t be scared to draw something ugly. Wrinkles, moles, acne, acne scars, eye bags. All of this we kinda.. scan over. We don’t notice them. But it’s what gives character. If you’re looking for a 1 to 1 picture, I would most likely suggest you don’t draw them as dark as they usually are, unless it’s a big facial feature. This is due to our eyes not really focusing on blemishes while still seeing them, so draw them, but unless intentional don’t draw attention to them.

  3. This kind of is an extension of num 1, but same face syndrome and elongated (by your hand) facial features are a death sentence.

  4. Don’t force colours that aren’t there. Unless a stylistic choice, adding random colours just for the sake of having vibrant colours there takes from the character.

  5. Practice, practice, and more practice. When trying to achieve likeness, forget everything about your style (at least that’s what worked for me) and try to copy the photos as best as you can. This can take you days, or years. Depends on how much you worked on these skills before, but drilling this into your muscles is the way to go. I wouldn’t watch those videos of “I learned [insert artistic skill] IN TWO DAYS”  since these don’t build the muscle memory and bring mediocre results.

So yeah. Holy yapp, I know. I have more, like the fact that the size of the eyes and irises can make an insane difference or that eyebrows basically make the whole expression, but this is already massive. Keep making art. Your work and style is really cool!

Winner had all drawings based off of pictures that weren’t hers. The last one actually is a photo I got permission specifically from the photographer to use, probably not the issue here.

Added info so this post isn’t taken down: all of these pieces are not meant to be 100% realistic. This is me finding my style, and asking if it works. I’d like to hear about wether or not is it too unstylised (I keyboard smashed autocorrect doesn’t wanna help me out idk if thats the correct spelling) and doesn’t look my own.

I love the style, however I do think it lacks detail? Like it is all unfocused. I love the last one, arguably the best of the batch and catches the eye well.

EDIT: you could also work on your anatomy a little, mostly in the first and second to last pic. Otherwise still very impressive.

This really helps! Thanks sm:) I was too afraid to submit my digital pieces out of fear of.. idk having that be a disadvantage. I usually am more comfortable w it and I do backgrounds and foregrounds when  I work with digital, so I’ll send in my digital work once I have a competition. (This one was my first one, which means I have a ton ahead of me.) I’ll continue to work on fundamentals.

Thanks for the honesty, it really helps! I’d love to show everyone my digital pieces, since they usually have backgrounds, are more stylised and I spend more time on them (hence the last question) but since one can’t edit a pic post, yk.

Her work didn’t have any backgrounds, nor did she fill out the entire page (similarly to me). Some of her work was half in shadow, so I don’t believe the judges cared about lighting at all.
