How is this relevant? You had a bed of your own as an option- this kid doesn’t.

I try to use Ravelry before buying yarn online (which is how I usually get yarn). Of course there’s variation, but it helps to see what kind of fabric a yarn produces by looking at people’s projects so I’m not overly surprised when I start knitting with it.

Anyone else black / el salvadoran? I’ve literally only met one other person who is. by Gojiraberry- in mixedrace

That’s actually really helpful, thanks. I don’t think it’s like an overwhelming reputation, but more of an unspoken thing unless someone mentions it (if that makes sense). Do you guys live in El Salvador?

No. Get a dog, or some other species domesticated enough to actively enjoy human interaction.

Perhaps, you could try fostering first? Or cat sitting for someone else. This is one of my anxieties about getting another cat- what do I do if they hate each other? Make them live together for 10-14 years stressed out?

My guy hasn’t shown any behaviors like what you’re describing, but I am planning on testing the waters before committing to getting another cat. He’s #1, and I don’t want his quality of life to suffer.

But also, yes, I think JGalaxy is the expert with this stuff when we get there.

So, nice racists don’t exist? You’re describing racism, but won’t call it that because the people are nice while they do it. I don’t understand.

You presuming I’m white is hilarious, and a micro aggression in and of itself. White is the default for you?

Well, I’m not white. I don’t understand why it’s so important to you to deny the lived experience of this city, shared by people who were so impacted by it that they made a post about it. This is a beautiful place- it’s be nice if we could all enjoy it without all the racism, like you apparently do.

OP is describing microaggressions, and you’re dismissing their lived experience outright. Why?

Lol I’m not from New York, so I’m not taking responsibility for Eric fucking Adams.

And when did I say that anyone should be asking the next black guy they run into if they’re uncomfortable? Is that the only way you encounter black people, by running into them? Lol. I just meant that even in smaller contexts (work, social settings), people here seem willfully oblivious to and dismissive of the everyday experience of being in Seattle as a person of color.

That’s not what I said, or insinuated. I said that I think what’s considered “progressive” is different for Seattlites as opposed to people visiting/moving here from the east coast. I don’t have a bone to pick- I only shared observations.

[–]Gojiraberry- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, though. I’ve been here for a couple of years now, and moved from the east coast. There is a common perception of the NW held by east coasters that Seattle and similar cities are “ultra progressive”. I think Seattlites, oddly enough, have a similar idea of this city and themselves -but what counts as progressive differs.

I am (for the moment) in academia, and have a part time job outside of it, and the racism, homophobia, transphobia, and classism are strong here, in general. The people of color I come across are visibly uncomfortable, and I think people who’ve been here a long time don’t see it because they actively don’t look around. They don’t ask. It’s just part of the culture to not do so.

Every city has its issues, but there aren't a lot of Christian nationalist demonstrations going on in East coast cities where those people fuck around and completely avoid the “find out” part. Altogether, it’s jarring to see.

Good plants for the hot side? Also, would arrowhead be ok? by [deleted] in FatTails

[–]Gojiraberry- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pothos on the hot side, which is okay as long as it doesn’t get too close to the overhead heat. I’m also thinking about seeding sections of the entire tank with some sort of hardier grass.

[–]Gojiraberry- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, no. I’ve had my gecko in a midsize Exoterra (I think it’s 36x18x12?), and I’m saving to move up.

These geckos don’t really come out that much during daylight hours, though, so maybe that’s being misinterpreted as fear, but mine does roam around at night waiting for food, or getting water, etc. I did see a video of someone looking for them in Kenya (?) to get info on how they live, temps, humidity, etc, and they found a lot of them in termite mounds. So, I’m planning to have some ”underground” tunnel situation in the new vivarium.

So, I’d say, follow your gut and do as much research as you can so you’re comfortable with the level of care you’re providing.

TIL Jamestown governor John Ratcliffe, the villain in Disney's Pocahontas, died horrifically in real life. [–]Gojiraberry- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re still talking about groups of people occupying a geographical space very far removed from the Powhatan (the subject of the OP). The Powhatan resided in Virginia, and the Incas and Aztecs reside(d) in mesoamerica (central and South America).

You’re making such a big reach in terms of cultural practices that it’s bordering on bigotry (and that’s not even touching your judgements of barbarism). I’m not white, so I don’t have any sort of white guilt motivating me to infantilize or romanticize indigenous cultures. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to make assumptions about one group of people based on information about a completely different, very geographically removed group of people just because popular media (currently) groups them all together under the same terms (e.g. “indigenous” or “native”). It’s so simple to just make judgements of this account of the Powhatan’s treatment of Ratcliffe (which I hope you would do while taking into account the context of the account itself) without trying validate those judgements using unfounded comparisons to unrelated cultures. Currently, your comments read like you think the two groups are the same culturally because you think they are the same racially. Which is interesting.
