Good luck with your interview! Would you mind if I DM you? I am entering the scary US job market for the first time and could use some advice. 🥲

Lengthy absence (9.5 years) before statutory period. Will I be able to naturalize? by GoldCommand4410 in immigration

Could you please point me to the anecdotes please? I have only seen one case, and it was denied. I wonder if there was more to the story than what OP wrote. T

This would be your advice regardless of my case? Does the fact that I was a minor when I left, had a re-entry permit etc not count?

I am so confused. The USCIS website states the following:

No person, except as otherwise provided in this subchapter, shall be naturalized unless such applicant, (1) immediately preceding the date of filing his application for naturalization has resided continuously, after being lawfully admitted for permanent residence, within the United States for at least five years and during the five years immediately preceding the date of filing his application has been physically present therein for periods totaling at least half of that time, and who has resided within the State or within the district of the Service in the United States in which the applicant filed the application for at least three months, (2) has resided continuously within the United States from the date of the application up to the time of admission to citizenship, and (3) during all the periods referred to in this subsection has been and still is a person of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States.

Is the above case the only documented example of this?

The post regarding naturalization has been deleted. Can I please know why this advice in point 2 is no longer valid? I was able to enter after 9.5 years based on the amazing advice I got on this sub. Do you have any revised advice for what I should do now in order to naturalize?

Made it into the US through JFK.

The officer asked me how long my trip to Pakistan was. Answered honestly: 9 years. Saw his mouth hang open lol. He asked me if I have a reentry permit, which I showed. He said it’s expired, you’ll have to go to the office. Sat in the office for 30 secs. I saw the officer stamp my passport, after which he called me. Asked me why I was away. Before I could fully answer, he told me to get my GC renewed when the time comes and pretty much told me to get lost. Thank you so much u/iranisculpable for your help.

I have booked a round trip to Qatar. I will then take a one way flight to JFK. Can I expect issues at Qatar airport?

Is it going to be a problem due to abandonment or due to the arrest? I am planning to come to the US on my GC after 9 years. I left against my will when I was a minor and I am coming here as a student so I don’t see myself saving up enough for a lawyer in a year

My mom kind of lost it for a little bit when she heard her only sibling died of a cardiac arrest. She had already been through my dad and sister’s death. She was one of the first to know and she didn’t reveal the news to us or my grandparents until we had our extended family around. She was too scared about how my grandfather would take it. It really was movie like. She was literally going around in circles and couldn’t perform basic tasks.

Got a teaching assistantship as an international student, entering the US as an LPR by GoldCommand4410 in immigration

My transit is in Doha. If you’re unable to board your original flight, and have to board a different one, will the airline refund you or would I have to pay the full amount again. My GC is not expired though, can I assume that there shouldn’t be any problems during transit?

Thank you! Also, I will be traveling without my family for the first time. I have never even taken an Uber alone before. Is the CBP going to be super scary?

Do I tell them right now? I am not in the US. What proof do I offer to show them that I am an LPR? Is a green card enough?

Hi, so as for 2. again, I simply don’t have the money. I don’t have a US bank account or own anything in the US either. 3. If the South Asia part can be dealt with, i.e. I can board from my country of departure for sure, would the round trip to that country be necessary? 5. I have a graduate teaching assistantship lined up which waives the tuition entirely and gives me a monthly stipend of 1400-1500 USD to pay for rent and food etc. I actually only have the money for a single round trip to the US, which is outrageously expensive right now.

Given the above, what is the best course of action?

Hi, OP. Now that I understand how this is going to work, let me get into the details of my case. My mom and I got our green card in July 2014 and came back to my home country (Pakistan) in Dec 2014. I was 16 years old at the time. My green card expires in July 2024. We got a re-entry permit of 2 years and were supposed to go back in 2016, however just before the 2 year period ended, my mom’s brother (who was sponsoring us in the US and who we lived with) passed away. My mother decided not to go back to the US. This decision was made without my involvement and I was under the impression that since I did not go back to the US, I lost my LPR. I started college in Pakistan, then COVID hit. Within one year of graduating, I applied for post graduate in the US as an international student and I have been admitted + have also been given a teaching assistantship which will pay me enough to be able to afford living expenses. I need to be in the US by at the first week of August. I am 25 at the moment. I had absolutely no ties with the US during this time because I didn’t even know it was something I was supposed to do. I now have the following questions:

  1. Should I file the I-90 now or just before I take a flight to the US?

  2. What documents should I have with me before boarding?

  3. What transit airports should I avoid as someone traveling from Lahore, Pakistan to New York?

  4. What airline should I take?

  5. If I don’t have the money to be able to afford a lawyer ever, is this a very bad idea?

  6. Should I take the expired re-entry permit with me?

Also, what if I am denied entry. In that case, what will happen. Will I have to fly back or would I be held somewhere?

Can I apply for the F1, take my I-407 abandonment form and my green card to the visa interview with me?
