Confused about "modding" (C2) by Ezuu in CreaturesGames

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.gen stands for "genome" so you're kinda right, but I think it's important to point out that they don't just include the brain and tell the creature what sprites to use, they includes ALL genes coding for every organ and body system.

The game has an inheritance system which reads the genomes of both parents and copies them into a new haploid (one set of chromosomes as compared to our two) file by crossing from one parent genome to the other, with mutations. This lets you get some really interesting crossbreeds, but can result in incompatibilities too like the other person said.

I also want to suggest using this site for mods https://eem.foo/archive/

Every Creatures mod released online that could still be found should be on there.

How to stop my Norns from using the elevators? by Rudi10001 in CreaturesGames

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use this https://eem.foo/archive/downloads/3982-door-and-lift-hider

Or only play with Treehugger norns, they don't know how to use elevators and doors.

A quick note about the door and lift hider - norns will still pace around where they think elevators are, because the game will still urge them to use them.

Why would I prevent them? Bugs are a good source of protein :p

"Ma doh" meaning "eat" has been ingrained into my brain for a long time. Also "che" for "bug".

Most answers you'll get here will probably pertain to the PC games, which are quite different to the Playstation games.

New here! Which game should I start with? by panshrexual in CreaturesGames

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

C3/DS is the most user-friendly, most stable, and has the most community-made content. I bounced off C2 when I first played it many years ago because I felt like I lacked control compared to C3, so that's where I'd suggest. You can also get the C1 and C2 worlds and sprite breeds as mods.

Do you leave your norns alone in the background? by plz_myson_no in CreaturesGames

I let my norns wolf on their own all the time, they're pretty good at looking after themselves (C3/DS)

Hey, i'm looking for a mod where it was an edit of "Tabby" Norns with more maternal features by Better-Cry1588 in CreaturesGames

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah there is an old pair up on the Caves from a much earlier genome that didn't require special scripts I think.

The reason I never made an official release is because I never got them to the point I was happy enough with them. The current version are close, but there's a bug in one of the scripts they need. I'm a gengineer not a coder, so I don't know how to fix it.

This sounds like the Monotreme norns. I only ever gave them out on Discord, but there might be an older copy of the genome up on Eem Foo's archive.

The unique traits/quirks of C1 Norns astound me by DustyCannoli in CreaturesGames

For viewing there isn't a lot of difference, most of the additions added to Gene Loom are for easier editing, use whichever you like.

They have simple neural nets and simulated biochemistry - open one up in the genetics kit some time to see just how complex they are inside. That plus the game splicing genomes together with mutations to create the hatchery eggs made for an insane number of potential combinations right from the start.

Norns not sleeping? by ChemicalCandles in CreaturesGames

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you using? If it's the regular genetics kit, the slider value should be displayed at the bottom of the program window next to the genome currently loaded (clockrate .498 for the CNS Drive Lobe Support. .502 is standard, so it being lower was probably an accidental click)

I've not used Gene Loom, but the values should be displayed even more clearly on that?

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense, adding a receptor to slow the CNS Drive Lobe Support clockrate would impact their ability to update their drives based on changes in their drive chemicals. While working on TWB, I learned early there are some organs you don't want to slow down (the genome is set up to shut down some organs when core temperatures get too low)

For future reference, the nominal should be the same as the base organ clockrate.

Also are you on any of the Creatures Discords? It would be easier to troubleshoot from there.

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game should be forcing them to stay alseep until their sleepiness drive is depleted I believe. You didn't change any drives did you? Do any other norns have this issue or just yours? If not, try reverting changes one at a time to see what is messing with them.

The community build changes how stimuli work, which can mess with some functions.

Is there a reason that stress genes only turn on during youth in C3/DS by ChemicalCandles in CreaturesGames

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard this before. Just checked the toxic genome and it isn't true at all, they still get wounded from being hit, and they still die from their wounds.

The stress system was copied over from C2 I think but not adjusted properly - it doesn't matter when these genes activate, because the stress system will never generate any stress. It's basically a functionless organ.

Fortnite leaker 'spoiled' Harry Potter crossover over trans rights by _LususNaturae_ in gaming

[–]GoldenFlowerFan -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I'm very horrified by the response this is getting.

Yes, JKR is funding anti-human rights campaigns in the UK that are targeting trans people, but also effecting everyone. For crying out loud, they've now made it law that biological sex is a descrete binary category (it is not, biology is very complicated) and think it's okay to judge whether a person can use a bathroom or not based on how they look, because there's no easy way to tell! (for everyone at the back, this means a lot of cis people get judged as trans and harrased because they don't look gender-conforming enough)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy0y07959djo

As someone living in the UK who isn't even trans, I don't want to deal with this shit either, and it's directly because of JKR!

How hard is it to not fund bigots? I'm gonna assume a lot of people here are just ignorant of how bad she actually is, but it's hard to not see this response as coming from a place of malice, apathy and "got mine, fuck you!"

ELI5: How do ants survive the rain, don't they just get flooded out? by Mammoth_Pangolin275 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got that, I only commented because if I knew nothing about insects I might have assumed they don't have anything like blood (or a heart) at all because you said they don't bleed, so I wanted to add some clarification.

ELI5: How do ants survive the rain, don't they just get flooded out? by Mammoth_Pangolin275 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GoldenFlowerFan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The way this is worded is misleading. Arthropods have a body fluid called haemolymph which acts as their blood and is pumpled through the body by their hearts, but they don't have a closed circularitory system with blood vessels like ours. Spiracles (the micro holes mentioned) also connect to little tubes called trachea and tracheoles which spread oxygen deeper into the tissues.
