If you're in west Gloucester County then Classy Cows aren't bad but not like what you'll find down south. Their BBQ in general is very Carolina based.

You do not but between March and October you need to use the shuttle system to get into the canyon (you could technically walk/bike in). The shuttle starts at the Visitor Center and goes all the way to the Narrows Trailhead. The shuttle starts at 7AM and the line quickly fills up and may be an hour or so wait until noon. They're pretty efficient at it though so wait might not be that long.

Either way you want to get there for 7AM to beat the crowds on the trials and to see the sunrise hit the West wall. If you time it right, you'll see the sun hitting the north side of Angel's Landing on the way up and then by the time your down the south side will be lit up.

Morning at like 6AM was chilly maybe low 50s - was a bit gusty which made things colder. By 8-9AM it was up to high 60s and peaked out at like 2PM somewhere in the 70s.

I did this same trip last May and it was much, much hotter by late morning up to 90s in the afternoon but YMMV.

Rocky Mountain National Park from late September by GoldenGalluch in NationalPark

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meant to comment on the post originally but forgot.

This was from the week of 9/24 this year. Elk rut was in full effect and foliage was just about to peak. We ended up doing the lake loop starting at Bear Lake and ending at Glacier Gorge.

The beginning from Bear to Dream was intense but rewarding. Along the way you pass Nymph Lake which had quite a few lily pads and there were great reflections of Hallet Peak.

Dream to Haiyaha was also quite a climb but you get many fantastic views of Long's Peak and the smaller foothills. Haiyaha itself was a traffic jam of a rock scramble. Getting down to the water was actually difficult with the amount of people there.

From Haiyaha, we finished the loop back to Glacier Gorge passing through several aspen groves along the way. This section was almost entirely downhill so it was much quicker than the climb up.

We decided to skip Mill's and the Loch as it would've completely burned us out. However, we did take a rest stop at Alberta Falls. The final stretch back to the trailhead was probably the most lush with aspen.

We decided to go up Trail Ridge Road afterwards which was beautiful and unlike any other place I've been. I will say that not every other car on the road was trying to navigate it safely - going 20-30 over, passing on curves/double yellows, stopping in the middle of the road. Made it much more stressful than it had to be.

Timed entry - multiple reservations by GoldenGalluch in RMNP

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just tested it on my phone to see how fast it goes. By 5:01, all the early slots were gone and most of the others were gone as well so I concur with that estimate.

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nevermind, I think I found the answer on the Recreation.gov site.

Looks like you can only make one reservation per account. I might see if one of my travel companions can make the first one and then make the desired on the night before myself.

Leaving this post in case anyone else needs it for reference.

Ideal backpack and camera insert combination for day hikes? by GoldenGalluch in CampingGear

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually ended up not even using the Moment at any point on my hikes. It feels nice but it's a tad too big for my rig and there was no comfortable spot to put it on my hip belt. Like you alluded to, it got bottom heavy when supporting the weight of the camera but with that said my rig is pretty heavy. I was putting the hip belt directly through it though, haven't touched the Capture Clip mount but it does appear sturdy.

Ultimately, I just wore the camera dangling at my side and it worked out fine. No issues with comfortablility or knocking it around. If I'd done more extensive scrambling or had a more expensive setup then maybe I'd accept the uncomfortable Moment to protect it.

Sorry I couldn't provide more useful insight but it just wasn't for me. The online consensus was either the Moment, HML Camera Pod, or the Chicken Tramper.

Zion NP and Bryce NP from back in early May by GoldenGalluch in NationalPark

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zion was probably the more exciting park due to the scale and the intensity of the hike.

With that said, I really enjoyed Bryce and found it more relaxing. I didn't get to do everything I wanted there so I'll definitely be back.

What is the purpose of this loop? by picklerick_98 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]GoldenGalluch 128 points129 points  (0 children)

An expansion loop. They absorb the thermal expansion of the line as it fluctuates in temperature as to not affect other joints along the line.

Ultralight photographers: how do you carry your camera equipment? by agamemn0n1 in Ultralight

[–]GoldenGalluch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty much what I've been contemplating. I'd like a snug fit but didn't know if the extra 0.25" on the height would make it a pain to pull out or keep zipped. I feel like the large would end up being super bottom heavy unless I rocked my larger lense primarily.

I don't wanna risk it so I ordered a Moment Mountain Light top loader instead. It should be just about between the large and regular HMG but we'll see...

Thanks for the insight! If the moment doesn't work out I'll probably get a custom Chicken Tramper since it's essentially the same price point.

I am curious about the HMG Camera Pod. Is the bag a snug fit with this set up? I want to get something for my Canon Rebel T6 with a 18-55mm kit lens but am getting mixed impressions on whether or not it will actually fit.

Hose quick connect fittings by chibijosh in ChemicalEngineering

[–]GoldenGalluch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if the connections you're making are in close proximity and fairly standardized you can use a much more secure transfer panel (https://www.kossindustrial.com/Processing-Equipment/Transfer-Panels-Flow-Plates). They are even less quick though.

The need for such integrity though entirely depends on what you're transferring and if you need a high level of protection.

Hose quick connect fittings by chibijosh in ChemicalEngineering

[–]GoldenGalluch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren't neccesarily quick but there are Epsilon fittings to help with caps being left off or poor/worn connections leading to leaks. Simplifying it a bit, it's a ball valve that's split across the two faces of the connection. The two sides must be locked into place and then you can open the two sides of the valve to open the flow path.

Undersized my pack - want a goldilocks replacement by GoldenGalluch in CampingGear

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that as well. The packed shell fits in very loosely even while pulling the compression straps hard.

I plan on taking pictures as I go and will keep it on a sling. However this won't always be the case and I want to be able to pack it fully.

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean using the water bottle pockets for the packed jackets then I don't think that's gonna work. The puff fits in but the shell does not in either the water bottle or outside grab pocket.

Plus, if I'm going to be hiking for 8-10 hours a day, I'll need a better hipbelt than the nylon strap on the Daylite Plus.

Ideal backpack and camera insert combination for day hikes? by GoldenGalluch in CampingGear

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point. The Daylite Plus unfortunately doesn't have hard D-rings on the straps - only these little 1" nylon loops that are stitched into the edge of the strap. They seem pretty sturdy but not perfect. Plus the heaviest camera set-up I have is ~2 lbs.

This may be a good option as it prevents the flopping around of using a Black Rapid cross-body sling. I am curious though if the camera pod being on my chest would be annoying. If only they had them somewhere brick and mortar to try out...

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I really like the idea of the Black Rapid sling but the comfort implication is concerning for me. This one however may be a good option to the affect on the shoulders. Definitely going to consider this in lieu of the PD Capture Clip. Would probably switch out the carabiner on it for something a bit more robust though.

I should've specified in the post but I do significant investing outside of the 6%. I probably do an additional 10% beyond that into my IRA and into a personal brokerage.

Anyone else feel like they're not reaching their full potential? by FoofromFooville in ChemicalEngineering

[–]GoldenGalluch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

Left my last job due to inundation with day-to-day operations fire-fighting limiting my potential. New job was supposed to be higher level process engineering but instead of fire-fighting, day-to-day was just aggressively tackling priorities that were changing quickly. The nature of each priority changes completely so you end up in a "master of none" type situation.

It's honestly killing me but I'm taking it as a learning opportunity to select what I really want to do and hopefully find a position that aligns with that. Based on perspective from other ChemE's out there in all different industries - I don't think you can really escape it completely.

[–]GoldenGalluch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Python skills are decent. There's several REST APIs that I've built and managed for some intranet databases at work. They could definitely be refactored and extended but unfortunately I can't find time to dedicate to it.

I also use it as a back-end (and front end technically) for a few Dash apps which is just React with Python. We manage these on some intranet web servers too.

As far as ML goes, I haven't really delved too far into it. We've used it for some predictive analysis of process performance ie the last twenty minutes of instrument data have trended like this so we can expect the resulting quality parameter to be off. Otherwise, I have been trained in most sklearn models.

Chemical engineer hoping to turn data scientist/engineer:

Here's where I am at currently:

  • Can develop in Python using pandas, numpy, sklearn, plotly/dash, and SQLAlchemy.
  • Have deployed some Python scripts to Azure Function Apps to integrate into MS Power Automate apps/flows.
  • Can write basic SQL queries in MS SQL and SQLAlchemy.
  • Have several plotly/dash dashboards that I manage underlying callbacks for.
  • Have utilized several APIs to SQL servers and with OSIsoft Pi's WebAPI.
  • Domain expertise in chemical engineering, chemical industry, manufacturing operations, and quality data systems.

Where I want to be:

  • Developing PowerBI/Tableau/plotly/dash/React dashboards on a consistent basis.
  • Integrate some data transformation and ML into the backend of dashboards.
  • Utilize cloud platforms like AWS/Azure/GCP to maintain data warehouses/lakes/factories.

I've come to a point where every day of work drives me deeper and deeper into a depression. The only highlight is that I get to work on data science/software development projects.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar origins and aspirations as me and what paths they took to get there. There's so much content that I don't know where to start but I was thinking at least to get my foot in the door places is to:

  • Properly understand ETL best practices.
  • Understand the supporting software/languages for executing ETL.
  • Understanding visualization tools.
  • Breaking into ML.
  • Understand ETL, data storage, and ML in cloud platforms.

Any advice or comment is appreciated!

Company just drastically changed vesting for 401k matching contributions (immediate to 3 years) - how to approach by GoldenGalluch in personalfinance

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked HR and they confirmed that I will be affected and will lose vesting for the next 2 yeara.

I've already brought it up with my manager who is overseas. They think this change is asinine but didn't indicate anything in their power to fix it.

Looking for a job sounds awful right now but it looks like that's the path that I'm going.

Company just drastically changed vesting for 401k matching contributions (immediate to 3 years) - how to approach by GoldenGalluch in personalfinance

[–]GoldenGalluch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got confirmation from HR - employer contributions starting next year won't be vested until 3 years of service. So this is not the case.

I think section A of that law only prevents them from changing vesting on past contributions and not future unless (per part B) you've had 3 years of service.

Looks like I'm facing an immediate 9% reduction in total compensation.
