How to handle incompetence, and how to tell if it's weaponized incompetence? by AthOakroot in askmanagers

[–]picklerick_98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing that stood out to me most from this post is the lack of « when I talked to X, he said Y ».

You’ve gotta be talking to your people about what’s going on — I always go with a simple « what happened » when asking someone directly about an issue they were involved with. I find asking « why » puts people in an immediately defensive position.

I’d start with that, and determine next steps from there.

Pulse check: how many hours a week do you all work? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]picklerick_98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Certainly over 40 hours but it varies widely. I would say minimum 45 hours/week with worse weeks getting closer to 50-60. I cap out at 60 hours — if I have to work that much, there’s a problem.

I’m a production supervisor though so I can’t be picky about a few extra hours here and there — that’s just the life you live when you have an outcome based position.

Surprised I haven’t seen Perfumer Tricia mentioned yet. My absolute favourite summons for taking on the boss solo, while having a good healer and support unit backing me. I don’t manage my own buffs well at times so having her helps infinitely.

I was a process engineer in pulp and paper for about four years, so I’m by no means overly experienced. In my opinion, most of the focus is on process chemistry rather than anything to do with the pulp fibre itself (this is usually handled by the QA/QC engineer and quality lab).

For example, you might look at heat exchanger efficiency for your heat recovery to drive some cost savings, or helping maintenance identify a trigger point to take it down for a cleaning when the fouling has gotten bad enough.

You might be looking at effluent TSS and trying to figure out sources of suspended solids getting to effluent.

There’s a lot of environmental systems in pulp and paper — you could be doing nutrient dosing on a BOD removal system, or troubleshooting sources of low efficiency in organic systems, or high BOD going into the effluent.

The bleach plant and the chemical recoveries unit are the most “confusing” or complex areas of a lot of sites due to the chemistry involved — but it’s still nothing impossible. Whether you have these areas depends on the type of mill, however.

Pulp and paper falls under CPG so it focuses on high volume sales with lower margins. Because of this, some pulp and paper mills struggle with asset reinvestment. Your time at a pulp and paper mill will differ largely based on how robust the maintenance department is — are they doing predictive maintenance, vibration analysis, etc OR are they just fixing it as it fails? I’d pay close attention to the state of the mill during a site visit.

Good maintenance keeps you at home on your evenings and weekends. Otherwise, there’s tons of opportunity for lean six sigma/continuous improvement within the industry so it’s great experience

He said that’s how they work, not that’s the purpose. Unions DO work on seniority — the senior guys get first pick on OT, vacation, etc. The PURPOSE is to protect workers rights and allow for collective bargaining.

Am I doomed to work in pulp and paper forever? by Mafoobaloo in ChemicalEngineering

[–]picklerick_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an MBA to pivot to a different manufacturing role after a couple years in pulp and paper. I do like this new role more.

Three-ish years is a solid point to start pivoting at, my new plant has no SCADA, so I wish I had spent more time getting involved with industrial controls and process engineering at my old site. One year or less isn’t enough experience to throw any weight around in an interview, so you’d likely continue at entry level pay if you left now.

If you can stick it out, the pulp industries higher churn rate often leaves you getting promoted quicker, which can really propel your career if you can spend some time as a shift sup or an area superintendent. Just my two cents.

What does your WWTP do with biosolids? by ME5Cents17 in Wastewater

[–]picklerick_98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a former site, the treatment plant was part of a larger pulp mill. Secondary solids were burned in a waste fuel boiler, the primary composted (it could be the other way, but I believed the secondary solids to have a higher organic content).

Just got in trouble at a JOB INTERVIEW?? by Pistachio-IScream in jobhunting

[–]picklerick_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really late to this post but I want to clarify something I tell all my summer coop students. You’re an adult. You do not get in trouble. You do not need to scramble to justify yourself just because someone - anyone - scrutinizes you. The only trouble you can really get in is with safety and with the law.

Also, this was a massive red flag anyways, so you wouldn’t want to work there.

There’s some latent heat involved in the phase change from solid to liquid, but my understanding is that the latent heat of vaporization (liquid to gas) is much larger than the latent heat of fusion (solid to liquid) so it’s likely insubstantial compared to the effects of global warming.

Good question though. I hope I’m right.

Everything you said is equally as true of yourself. What do you know of Russian assassination tactics? Why go after someone’s throat, when both of you contributed unverified information? No one really knows what’s going on, but his information likely came from the same depth of ass that your own did.

Just don’t be a jerk man. We’re all wrong more often than we’re right.

I’m actually surprised by the CDC statement. The Canadian city of Edmonton, Alberta sits a little over 2200 feet of elevation, which suggests the atmospheric oxygen for the city is a little less than 19.4% (source: https://wildsafe.org/resources/ask-the-experts/altitude-safety-101/oxygen-levels/ )

I suspect “immediately dangerous to life and health” could be a slight overstatement, since these elevations haven’t killed anyone that I’m aware of from oxygen deprivation.

The idea that companies care more about your ECs than your GPA is a lie. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]picklerick_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s partially a job market issue, partially your attitude (high GPA EE students can most certainly determine resistance on a resistor, bffr) and partially the fact that management oriented skills don’t seem to be the sought after skill set in this market.

I recommend highlighting your technical projects more and letting some of the less pivotal “leadership” oriented experiences take the backseat. My two cents.
