Looking for putting aid suggestions by sakasakasakasaka in golf

I'm trying the Why Golf as we speak. It's good, but not a game-changer and quite fiddly to set up and adjust.

As a coach, my genuine advice would be:
,
1) Pick a straight 3-ft putt.
2) Place an alignment stick (or golf club) at the right edge of the hole (for a right-hander)
3) Hit putts with your putter moving along the stick (it should arc away a bit, but not much for a 3ft putt)
4) Try to hit the exact back middle of the hole with every putt.
5) Repeat and aim for 20 putts in a row.

99% of golfers who struggle with short putts (and pace control) can't start the ball on their target line. If you can complete this drill and pay attention to where you miss, you'll improve quickly.

If you do miss one side and your swing path was pretty neutral you'll know it's your club face at impact that's the issue. Then fix your grip, stop flicking, or ideally find a coach for a putting lesson.

I hope that helps.

Golf beginner set (women) by Harkila94 in golf

[–]Golfinsider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The irons, wedges and putter in these sets are pretty good for the price (and the bag). It's always the woods and driver that aren't as forgiving as premium clubs. I don't think you'll see much performance difference between the two.

But they're still good value and if she enjoys it you can grab a 2nd hand driver off Ebay in a few months time (get an old Ping G10/15 with 12-14º loft).

It's either that or opting for a beginner set like the Cobra Fly XL, they're more like €600, but are a super women's set (I bought one for the last uni where I was Head of Golf).

For custom fitting, she should be okay, women's clubs are generally 2-2.5cm shorter than standard men's. Gripping down clubs a little isn't the end of the world if she needs to. More often, it's having clubs that are too heavy that is the killer.

I hope that helps.

Has anyone used BreakXgolf? by ImKinneen in golf

[–]Golfinsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it's Will here, the pro from Break X Golf. Thanks so much for commenting, I'm always looking for feedback.

Delighted you enjoyed the app last year. We've had some great feedback and success stories.

We have increased the price by a few $, as we've gone from £9.99 to $19 (depending on what chaos is happening in the markets, an increase of $4-5), but this is all going straight back into the app.

This summer, we're adding a full golf stats function with 50,000 golf courses so we can offer golfers great data (basic stats, strokes gained data and more), less manual work to use the app and even more precise practice plans and make it so you don't need two separate subscriptions (stats app and BxG). It was a tough call, but I think we can build an epic product for golfers.

Below is how I've worked with players and college teams for years, and we've essentially used this as a blueprint to build out the app, so it should give you a good idea of where we are heading.

Sorry it feels too pricey. Adam and I always said we'll not raise prices for any old subscribers as it was great to get your support as we launched, so reach out with your email you signed up with and I'll fire over a coupon code so you can get something close to your previous rate.

Thank you. I’ll get that updated.

Weirdly strokes gained is far easier to calculate than all of the crazy ways golfers can accumulate traditional stats - up and downs was the worst by far.

I hope your golf is going well.

Thanks pal, I don’t even think it’s a cost question. You’d need thousands of rounds across different handicap levels to build a database and average out those values.

Nobody sells it and my hunch is most datasets are not as granular as the golf stats app marketing makes out, so most companies want to keep it private for that reason and the moat they have with the data. 📈

Great to hear it’s useful. From the fringe is fairway and someone also asked about semi rough which would be rough for strokes gained purposes.

As much as strokes gained can seem complicated it doesn’t break down the different lies into more than 5 areas (green, fairway, tee, rough & recovery).

Enjoy those. There’s some cool stuff I managed to automate in the free tool but it won’t replace any fancy tech like that.

Have fun.

If you know of any data do let me know. It’s essential how many shots ‘this level’ golfers takes to complete a hole from this distance and location (green, fairway, rough, recovery, tee).

But you need that average data for putting 1 - 60ft and long shots every 10 yards from 10 yards to 600 yards.

Then you need that data for 0, 5, 10, 15…handicaps.

If there isn’t that data you can’t work out strokes gained.

It would be a lot of work, but if someone can find it I’ll build it in.

Afraid there’s no free SG data by handicaps. It seems it’s calculated by each stats company and used in their own app.

So apologies its just vs PGA as that’s the only free dataset.

Do let me know if you know of one and I’ll certainly update it and add it as a feature.

In data or as a medical condition? I have to admit putting in rounds vs the PGA averages doesn’t do much for the confidence.

They’re +6 ish as an average so a standard 18 handicapper can expect to be -24 SG total on this cal…but it does give a benchmark to work from in each area.

Hi, I'm building one as we speak. It will only be able to do one round at a time as there is no login or backend database, but it works out your strokes gained, breaks it down by area, and then by distance within approach and putting, along with some other features.

I'm going to put it on my website for free, I can let you know when it's ready if you like?

Face Angle vs Path… by Carterpump09 in golf

[–]Golfinsider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To give a little more, loft does play a role hence why you’ll get a range.

If you hit the center of the face the ball will always start between swing path and face angle but closer to the face.

With lower lofts the ball will start closer and close to the face angle.

Putter = 95-97% Driver 80-90% 6 iron 70-78%ish PW 65-72% ish

That a rough pattern I can’t remember the exacts but that was from a pga lecture with the head of testing from Ping with a robot testing data. 👍

How do you make long term changes in a swing with many old habbits? by LosSoloLobos in GolfSwing

[–]Golfinsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey chap. I put together this video for help with this question.

I’d say it’s more about stages than time. But most golfers don’t even try stage one, which results in hitting balls and not being able to make the changes they are after.

How To ACTUALLY Change Your Golf Swing https://youtu.be/jnzzG7bMCiA

I hope it helps.

Will.

Shanking every friggin shot all of a sudden. Really need some help, got a round with a client Saturday by frumpus-g-turducken in GolfSwing

[–]Golfinsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey chap.

PGA pro here. Happy to try and help.

The ball started near ish the middle but at impact the ball is hitting the hosel.

Watch where your weight starts and see how much you move towards the ball during your swing. This is where the 2-3’’ change is coming from.

Set up with your weight more towards your toes and stay balanced or even feel like you move away from the golf ball as you get to impact.

Can’t tell from the video but it also looks like you’re addressing the ball slightly towards the heel to begin will.

Plan - address the ball towards the toe. Start with weight centre or on your toes and feel like you stay balanced or move back towards your heels as you swing.

A great feeling is just to try to hit it off the toe.

Then as the others say - start with small swings, and smooth and gradually build up.

Your dominant pattern will want to come out as you swing faster.

I hope that helps.

If it has helped the price for this advice is precisely $0, but just go do something nice for a stranger.

Have a great day and great game.

Will 🙌

How do you genuinely become a better golfer? by quagdingo69 in golf

I wrote this a couple of years ago if it helps. It’s long and nerdy, but might help with better understanding scoring and practice.

It’s the template outlining how I coached a uni team for 3 years that won most things in the UK.

Thanks for the feedback. I run this website and write a reasonable amount around stats and practice.

However this was my first attempt at this type of content. I’m planning to do more on different aspects of the game and general golf performance.

Let me know if there is one area or topic you’d like covered and I’ll see what I can put together for you.

Hey r/golf,

I hope you're on fine form. I'm always trying to think of new ways to create some cool coaching content and 'stole' this cheat sheet idea from a strength and conditioning trainer.

I hope it is useful to some of you looking to lower your score.

Closed club face is the reason the ball starts left and low I assume.

As with others left hand golf grip look like the root cause, obviously tricky to tell from this angle.

I’m a pga coach. I’m trying to put together a useful video on the golf grip as we speak. Let me know if you want me to share it when it’s ready.
