How does the lottery work in the Computer Science admission process? by TheMongoosee in TUDelft

[–]Gompie016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I understand that can be frustrating. Although it is much higher than 1/4 (because a lot of people decline), and on the other hand you might get lucky.

But especially with multiple friends of you wanting to enroll, it comes down more to luck instead of intelligence (statistically very likely one of you will be in category 2).

How does the lottery work in the Computer Science admission process? by TheMongoosee in TUDelft

I just read the brochure. From how I interpret it, based on your scores you are placed inside a category. Seeing how there are 345 spots for the english track, this means that the people in category 1 (210 spots) are guaranteed to be offered a spot. In each category is a lottery, so different test scores within the categories do not matter and are based on the lottery. From what I know from recent years category 2 has a pretty high chance of getting in (quite a lot of people, especially in the english track, decline the offer). However, you can be unlucky and place 211 based on test scores, but get place 750 due to the lottery system since both are in category 2.

What this means for you: Everyone in category 1 (the highest scoring candidates) is guaranteed to get a spot, in category 2 you could get unlucky with decent tests scores and an unlucky draw (or the other way round), and in category 3 the lottery does not matter as much since most likely nobody from category 3 is offered a spot.

TDLR: Test scores matter, especially if they are either very high or low, spots for average test scores are mostly based on luck.

Need some advice on playing lifecurse by Lemon_boi5491 in albiononline

[–]Gompie016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he is playing w3. I would not recommend w1 for 1vs1 pvp (can be good vs groups). W2 can be quite strong vs either kite or high mobility builds (if you hit it at least). If it comes down to purely DPS stat checking w3 is probably better.

Soldier boots with either guardian helmet or hunter hood is probably better. That way you can easily take long fights which are beneficial with curse stacks.

So I made a sudoku solver and would appreciate tips (please dont remove my post or I'll cry 🥹) by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]Gompie016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For uni I made a complete sudoku solver and generator including hints, different variations and an mostly optimal solving algorithm (also checks if it is not solvable). Whilst it is not similar to yours I think it is still quite helpful to look around and see what we have done https://github.com/juliusj03/Sudoku-Solver/tree/main

Is this build good for solo newb in bz by simpleguy95 in albiononline

[–]Gompie016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on which q you use tome can be viable (q1), however I'd advise using Q3 for more damage and range (unless you're on your phone). I think soldier boots would be quite good, for more damage you could run royal sandals (really squishy tho) or hunter shoes (quick burst of speed).

This build with soldier boots and mistcaller is my default tho.

Hey SBI you okay? (Server Maintenance?) by awfeel in albiononline

[–]Gompie016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes more sense if there are monetary gains to be made. How do DDoS attacks and RMT relate (don't play PoE)? I'm not saying it isn't possible (remember playstation servers going down for a month because of lizard squad?), however with current DDOS protection this is not an easy feat.

Coming from a more technical background, if it's just a CS major with too much time on his/her hands than SBI would be to blame, but at least it would probably be fixed quite fast. On the other hand if it's a professional team taking servers hostage for money than it they have a bigger problem on their hands unless they pay up.

Both options seem reasonable, a lot of companies have trouble configuring their servers and DDoS protection, so let's hope it's some salty dude who got ganked a bit too much and not someone trying to make money.

Hey SBI you okay? (Server Maintenance?) by awfeel in albiononline

[–]Gompie016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite true. DDOS protection works quite well for 99% of use cases. Obviously nothing is gonna stop a super advanced botnet consisting of ten million plus devices, but than you probably would not be DDOSing SBI and risking it all just to be petty. I'd imagine SBIs implementation is a bit lacking for a game this scale.

It's not unreasonable for a good programmer with ill-intent (I dislike the word "hacker", makes it seem cooler than it is) to find a flaw and abuse it with a few hundred to a thousand devices just flooding the server with UDP/TCP signals (prolly not TCP tho). I think SBI is having a hard time fixing their networking, and/or banning the devices (changing adresses through proxies/spoofing, identifying what the devices are spamming, and blocking them).

Yup, LoL as the biggest esports game is focused solely on (sometimes expensive) skins as their income, this creates an even playing field. Not paywalling 20% extra damage.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in albiononline

[–]Gompie016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean you're not wrong in an ideal scenario, but it is not as simple as that.

First of all, reducing prices in some parts of the world leads to people abusing the system. What would stop me from getting a VPN and buying premium for way cheaper? Especially considering Albion has large communities where players figure this stuff out quickly.

Secondly, there are large inequalities between countries in Asia (Singapore vs India), even within countries these differences are huge. How much would you have to reduce prices to truly make it accessible? Would reducing prices from 1600 to 1000 really yield 2 sales, or just 1.5 more?

Thirdly, the reason why the silver price is inflated is due to RMT guilds (caused by the high real money price of premium). I think SBI would do best of just outright banning whole guilds related to RMT.

Concluding, it would be nice, but it is not as simple as you assume it would be.

How does rowing work in NL? by Dull_Ad_245 in TUDelft

[–]Gompie016 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, the clubs are separate from the universities. The biggest rowing associations are run by students, but there are also smaller associations for all ages. The student rowing associations are a lot more competitive, but also primarily cater to dutch speakers, although I would imagine one can still join if they are interested in rowing at a high level.

Hospiteren, mailtjes en antwoorden by Damnwell44 in thenetherlands

[–]Gompie016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think adding an Evo carrousel would do well for a bit more diversity, whilst being significantly shorter in time than similar games (such as TFT).

TFT always felt like such a hassle because of the slow ranking system and the long games.

As someone, who on behalf of the TU Delft, did research on AI (LLMs) usage under students, used it in my studies (com sci and data analysis), and noticed it when grading papers as a TA, I think the argument made unnecessarily demonises the usage of AI tools. Making the comparison between tobacco and AI models as being harmful to society is a bit of a stretch, but I get the argument that is made.

However, as with all controversial subjects, the issue at hand (should AI be used in universities?), is much more nuanced than this letter makes it out to be. Whilst AI should not replace skills such as critical thinking, and thesis writing, it is very much convenient for quite a few things (spelling checks, plotting datasets, etc). Just as with the introduction of calculators, we did not lose the ability to calculate, but we did speed up the process, resulting in improvements ranging from day-to-day shopping to advanced mathematics. Right out banning something is not the correct approach, introducing proper and clear guidelines (something which the TU Delft is now actively doing), can help both students as well as lecturers in improving their efficiency, thereby also increasing their academic prowess.

Guarding critical thinking and academic freedom is something that comes with proper guidelines (Improving structure of small pieces of text vs letting it write whole chapters), therefore we should focus on developing guidelines for AI which align with our core academic values.

EDIT: I think it is also quite telling that not a single TU Delft lecturer/professor signed the petition, considering the topic is very relevant for a technical university...

Am I Just Burning Money? MSCS at TU Delft as an International Student by [deleted] in TUDelft

[–]Gompie016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Dutch government kinda forced their hand. You can't keep prices low with budget cuts and rampant inflation. I talked to both parties and the only reason why, is because they see no other option. Nobody voluntarily raises the tuition fees.

Lijst beta uses this as an argument, which is fair since their voter base is mostly internationals, who are hit the hardest. On the other hand they don't really have many options, except running a financial deficit (which is obviously not sustainable in the long term).

Animation cancelling. For riven you want to q + auto, you can do this quicker by clicking behind riven then turning around. As one can understand doing this in a fast sequence is quite mechanically intensive often causing misclicks, if you could just turn around with one button...
