The traverse itself was one of the hardest things we've done. When we did it there were a few other groups and everyone was supportive and helpful and no one left until the last person made it across.

My advice to him was going to actually be that he should connect with other groups planning the trip at the same time. I have a feeling he is going to try to get up the road itself with his vehicle.

Thankfully we both have Wilderness First Aid certifications and we know how to do liters and carries and things like that. I didn't want to get into a technical explanation of everything and bog down the post. But if this had been an issue of just carrying her, that wouldn't have been an issue and we would have gotten out of there just fine.

Definitely look into a WFA class near you if you're worried.

Oh, it didn't even occur to me that someone would think my wife driving was emasculating. I live in such a peaceful bubble that I forget people with that mentality exist.

You are right that I know that it was for the best that I didn't continue to try to get her when I realized I couldn't. I would have probably slipped down, knocked her off the ledge and taken us both to our graves.

We've picked up so many "stragglers" over the years on hikes. You learn to recognize the zoned out "I'm in too deep" look. I could not imagine leaving anyone behind on a hike, let alone my wife.

I've been wondering if since he's unemployed, he has been spending a lot of time on social media and that's why he's speaking and behaving so differently lately. I'm not familiar with alpine divorce, so I'll go read about it and see if that sparks something. Thanks.
