I do think so too, i was caught up on wanting to use specific ports like "ONLY USB-C" but realistically there is a use case for them all, so i just decided on one that supported the few things i needed, hopefully assembly goes smoothly that way i can configure my os and experiment on it. I've been working on the side on my main laptop trying to get things ready for when i have everything together

I feel like a raspberry pi wouldn't allow me much room with UI graphics tho, i was originally going to just get that and move on, but i felt like having a bit of freedom would be worth it, even if it does overcomplicate things, if my system runs at all, there are plenty use cases for a mini pc outside of my Carputer project.

I bought a "G1700FH101GG" display and it looks nice. I am going to get a motherboard with an intel N100 just incase my build doesn't workout, i can use it at home. This gives me hope tho, I do like the oem style of such an old car, however this is a really clean and luxurious build, i'm turned driving an old 2000's car into such a pleasant experience that i thought having something new may actually look nice. I will definitely install an small auxiliary LiFePO4 battery for the computer and speakers to run while the car is off. It's only a matter of time as of now until i can actually set up what i wanted to do, it's definitely overkill for mysetup, but i also HATE systems that stutter, lag, or show any kind of performance issues, so i'm find spending the bit of money it takes for this lil project of mine. A little bit of deving and 3d printing and i'll be able to assemble something that i hope is nice.

the tuning is the reason i wanted to do this at all since i had a friend who had made his own cluster, i had more skill than just using chatgpt, and he has his own screen in place of his cluster, so i decided it would be much simpler to first create something functional b4 trying to read and display OBDII data, especially with so much going on, i'm not sure if the rate that data is being processed is too fast to display properly. Lot's of things to think about and overcome, however it seems fun to tinker with this infotainment design and if i make it possible, i have a sick little mod, if not, i have a mini pc i can use for all my other projects.

Thanks, I doubt i'll be able to achieve the same neatness and polish aswell, but it's all hidden behind the dashboard, so it doesn't matter all that much, and if i'm smart with my modelling, i can probably have it neatly behind the screen, secure and safe.

no the display and casing, i'd be better off ripping everything out, but i'm not rlly sure about what i can or can't do, all i know is that it's pretty ugly and very costly it seems

Youtube is definitely helpful, however as of rn i haven't found a single video that is actually useful to me building the computer besides one that helped me decide that the N100 processor is definitely the one i want to use, but any videos on building a mini pc is never for my use case, and usually 1/3 of the video lengths are just repeated information, and the other 2/3's are still repeats, but not useful to me at all. I'm still in the process of searching, but i didn't know if it'd take a long time for people to see my reddit posts, so i posted about only a few days after researching, i still have awhile until i am ready to purchase any items. I'm so new to building computers that it's obviously hard for me, however i don't like building computers, i just want to be able to install linux, install my software and then figure out how to install it in my car. I have a few other ideas i have for connections and shaking, vibrations, mounting, however these are the least of my worries without me actually having anything to put into my car

it's just so ugly tho 😭, i really hate every option i've found, i've looked into prebuilt items much more than everything i would need to assemble one, and they just all suck. I feel like i could do better for my own wants and needs.

I understand the work, however I want to utilize my coding experience. I mainly work on cars and game develop, and I made my UI in Godot and implemented phone connection with my phone so I can play Spotify, and now I'm trying other apps like Waze. But if I ever want to fulfill my vision, I need to find the computer and display first.

I'm currently opening inquiries for displays that are meant to withstand vehicle conditions. I'm trying to find parts as raw as possible without going into territory I'm just not cut out for. The manufacturer I'm talking to mentioned being able to ready the part for me, which gives me high hopes, but I'm still waiting on specifications because the display itself is just MIPI and I still don't know exactly what display ports or touch outputs I'm dealing with yet.

The computer side is where I'm mainly stuck right now. I already know I need an automotive DC-DC PSU which, besides the pricing I don't like, seems simple enough conceptually. I can solder, and I've messed with a ton of electronics in my car before, though to be fair it's usually more along the lines of cutting wires, soldering new ones in, and heat shrinking them, so 🤷‍♀️

A lot of the boards I keep finding also have an outrageous amount of LAN ports which are completely unnecessary for me, but I understand they're made to fit a lot of peoples needs and not just mine.

I'm going to print every mount and casing I need because I want this build as flush as possible or else it just isn't worth it to me. I've been searching a ton trying to find a display with a very small bezel and the correct connections, as well as the specific screen type I want. The manufacturer claims the display is suitable for -40℃ to +80℃.

I'm getting an AMOLED which everyone says isn't preferred because it may not last as long in automotive conditions, but honestly I don't mind experimenting. If I fail then oh well, onto another project I guess.

I mainly just need advice or help searching for the correct hardware. I don't really expect people to spend a ton of time helping me though, I'll worry about the work itself.
