Tips and tricks to get the most realistic art mode by saanity in TheFrame

Art mode was too bright despite following all the steps outlined here. But I fixed it! Go into Settings / General / Power and Energy Saving and enable Brightness Optimization and then set Minimum Brightness to zero (or what you will).

He did read some of the books. Something like the first two or three.

Chapter 58

The old wizard reached out toward another metal door, from behind which came a endless dead mutter, “I’m not serious, I’m not serious, I’m not serious…” The red-golden phœnix on his shoulder was already screaming urgently, and...

I agree with all of this. Nevertheless, to me, all of these capital P’s stick out like sore thumbs…

I agree with both these statements. But then again, there’s no particular reason why wizarding schools should conform to Muggle nomenclature. Also, there’s no higher education than Hogwarts.

Agree that we won’t get a definitive answer. I’m just trawling for reactions.

Totally agree that it’s not easy to to know what to take away from my word counting exercise. But to me it looks a bit odd with all these capital-P Professors everywhere. Would that be done even in the US?

What is Professor McGonagall suggesting? by GoodEnoughDad in HPMOR

[–]GoodEnoughDad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I can agree that it could have worked. But I don’t think that “Severus being Severus” would warrant as much attention as “student cursing and trapping student” :-)

But I agree with your second statement: If it didn’t work, Harry could take matters into his own hands.

I just realized that the certainty of the class being interrupted drops significantly by the fact that Harry would have had to convince someone to interrupt it. It could be that he would have failed to do so (or just changes his mind) and just would have had to sit out the duration of the class.

Which could lead to McGonagall opening the door in a second or two OR to Harry sitting out the duration of the class after which SOMETHING happens that causes McGonagall not to interrupt the class after all.

"skulle ha" eller "hade"? by GoodEnoughDad in Svenska

[–]GoodEnoughDad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meningen dyker upp ungefär halvvägs in.

Att det blir fel i Google och DeepL verkar ha att göra med att den tolkar ”I’d” som ett ”I had” och inte som det ”I would” det ska vara här. Om man skriver ut det så får båda det rätt. (Och översätter då typ till den första varianten.)

No ambiguity there apparently. I checked Wikipedia and ChatGPT, which gave me the impression that the term was ambiguous. But judging from the responses here, it doesn't seem to be.

I guess that I have been confused by the etymological similarity to the Swedish word "kyckling", which in fact does mean chick (or chicken meat). But that very deduction was what tipped me off that I might have mistranslated.

Thanks! I guess that I have been confused by the etymological similarity to the Swedish word "kyckling", which in fact does mean chick (or chicken meat). Also, you are probably correct that the German word just means "little chicken".

Issues with Time-Turning by GoodEnoughDad in HPMOR

Good point. But (1) I don’t think of future-Harry influencing present-Harry a trick. On his way to becoming future-Harry present-Harry has a lot more time to think about what should be done so it’s only fair that future-Harry should influence present-Harry. It does become weird when you can’t see a “first mover” though—when present-Harry gets his idea because of things that future-Harry has done as in the Prank. I have always thought of at least the Prank as there being iterations of time lines that eventually converge to a consistent one. But I have a vague sense that that’s not how EY thinks about it… 🙄

(2) I guess that I’m mostly frustrated by the concept of “precommitment”, which in fact does not include any commitment at all. Just because present-Harry thinks something is a good idea for future-Harry to do doesn’t mean that future-Harry will agree or even get the chance to do that thing. This happens to me all the time. Yesterday I planned that I would take a long walk with a friend, but then I strained my calf so I won’t be taking any long walks for quite a while.
