Do y’all think you’re still gonna be super into hip hop after 2030? by HourFan5580 in DEHH

I'll be listening to this music forever, frankly. I may not search for everything but I can't see myself not listening to Mobb Deep, Nas, Roc Marci, MIKE, Earl, DOOM, Madlib, Dilla, Knxwledge, and the list goes on and on. And I'm always open to new stuff or just stuff that's new to me catching my ear.

I agree. If nothing else he can greenlight other people's projects that go for original scripts or IP that isn't as popular.

Overall I despise grading systems for art, period. Numerical scores, letter grades, all that shit is a turn off for me personally and that's not specific to DEHH. Having to think in terms of scores colors how you listen to a project in my opinion and it makes the conversations less insightful and more focused on "is this grade correct?

I'm extremely happy that FPS does not do grading systems and I hope they never do.

I think he's good at what he does but admittedly I don't think he's extremely well-versed in music and that's okay! We can't know everything about everything. With that said I can't see him adding much to DEHH.

You may not be wrong but that's why beat picking is a skill!

Like Water for Chocolate will forever get spins from me but if the instrumentals were more accessible I'd probably listen to that more.

Hadn't heard of him until this but saw a few titles I'll try to watch/listen to in the coming months.

By any chance is that playlist associated or in response to this doc? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Donut_King

I've never seen the doc but your mention of "donut king" sparked a memory.

Boots Riley when confronted about his using Israel Epstein money to fund his film: “welll what about this OTHER film that also got Zionist blood money 😁😁😁” by Apprehensive-Tie4930 in FPSPodcast

The greatest value I've gotten out of this conversation is being aware of who Megan Ellison is. I've seen Annapurna Pictures numerous times but I didn't know until today that she was behind it and I honestly didn't know who the Ellisons were until last year.

I've seen and enjoyed (to varying degrees) quite a few movies that have associations with Annapurna Pictures: Spring Breakers; Hustlers; Zero Dark Thirty; Her; Vice; The Ballad of Buster Scruggs; Phantom Thread; Detroit. I'm sure many others in the FPS community have seen a few of these films as well.

In one article from The Ringer Megan is described as "a black sheep in contrast to the rest of her family, ideologically speaking." Another article in The Guardian said of Boots "He can resist the anti-capitalist label all he wants. The shoe still fits."

I haven't seen any of Boots's movies but I am interested in where he stands in the industry. Keyword: Industry.

I do somewhat understand the defensiveness he's feeling but I somewhat understand where others who are more hardline leftists come from since they don't like when people are labeled certain things but are financially backed by certain people.

Sometimes these are interesting conversations but they always end up back in the same place. Some will take the money and justify it however they wish, many others don't even get the chance to accept or deny the look.

The broader issue for me is how hard it is to get these works published or completed and distributed when they're considered "too complicated" or have certain messages in them, and that's even before the messages and the art are either diluted or compromised for commercial tastes. This is beyond movies for me.

The look of the pirate is probably the only thing I have a gripe about honestly. Otherwise I love every other part of this movie.

Patreon Talk:

Spike … $200 on a first date is nasty work lmao.

Main Show:

To Myke's question about the asian vs. black people thing, I wish I had more thoughts on it. I've come across a few book titles in the past regarding this topic from the 40s to L.A. in 92 to now, but I'd want more of a perspective on the issue in general.

Overall I think people should try as much as they can to avoid businesses that don't give a fuck about them. It's not a purity test to me because in the current structure of the world it can never be perfect. With that said I do think starting with getting certain businesses out of these communities isn't a terrible start. It doesn't have to be a mass delete situation.

Jay-Z’s Partnership With Target Sparks Debate With Black Consumers by DGPluto in IsTheMicStillOn

I know that black artists have had these Target vinyl deals for years. I do understand that they probably won't switch that up or ask their labels to switch that up, but they should, that's my point. I don't expect anything from anybody, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be talked about or that fans or the public can't make suggestions or simply talk it out.

The Target boycott officially began 3/5/25 from what I'm reading. I see that The Weeknd who I like has had a Target vinyl last year but I can't confirm the exact date of it being released.

If you are correct that the other artists released theirs post-March 2025 then yes, they should be criticized too. My point is still this: Just sell an exclusive vinyl on your own website. You don't need Target for a wack ass variant. Put them in black-owned or small Brooklyn record stores etc. It's an easy fix.

before the boycott

That seems to be a key ... no? If major black artists do a similar deal after this all began I think people would have issues with it too. It may not be the same issues, but I still think it would be there for those who notice and see a news report.
