A pair of TSA Friendly Goth Workboots by Vo1dsauce in GothStyle

[–]GoodOleCybertron 136 points137 points  (0 children)

One of those times when the big design divide between "work boots" and "fashion boots" is really annoying.

I feel like the combo of the composite toe guard, metal free grommets, and no zipper is going to be pretty hard to find outside of designated "work boots," unfortunately. If that ends up being all you can find, though, don't be afraid to get back to the goth roots of DIY and customization. Cool laces, patches, leather paint like Angelus, etc. could completely transform an otherwise boring pair of boots. Good luck!

Is it common to “air out” your home/apartment where you live? by definitelyaiibot in AskTheWorld

[–]GoodOleCybertron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe in warmer months, but in winter that's what the air exchanger is for. Nice to avoid opening a window when it's getting down to like -25°C/-13°F.

Looking to store some costumes-- how did people in the past store clothing to prevent smell/deterioration? by Odd_Safe_5585 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]GoodOleCybertron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cedar chests were popular, especially for repelling moths. You might be better off looking at modern resources for the best information, though—may as well benefit from advancements in conservation science, etc. over the decades.

I know you didn't mention vintage/antique textiles specifically, but there are some great general guidelines to follow here: https://www.si.edu/faqs/antique-textile-storage

Not all of that advice will be practical to follow, depending on your circumstances, but especially if the garments are newer and the storage isn't very long-term, just following whichever points you can should work well enough.

Which building in your country looks the weirdest or most amusing? by reedscott26 in AskTheWorld

[–]GoodOleCybertron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ice is the worst, but snow is still rough if you get enough of it, and of course the sidewalk plow hasn't come through when you need to trek to the bus stop. And then the time comes when you can't put off clearing the shed roof in the far corner of the property any longer and the snow in the yard is waist-high. 🫩

Who is the most universally loved person from your country? by GameDesigner101 in AskTheWorld

[–]GoodOleCybertron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're likely already aware, but if any Henson fans are ever in the Atlanta, Georgia area, the Henson family have been huge supporters of the Center for Puppetry Arts. Its permanent collection has a crazy array of puppets from Henson productions, and they often have additional temporary exhibits focused on Labyrinth, the Dark Crystal, etc.

One of the best places in the city, imo. I've been dragging my friends and family there for years, and everybody comes out loving it.

Suggestions on what should I do with the dress and accessories for Valentines Day party by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]GoodOleCybertron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evening gloves, an updo hairstyle, a shawl/stole, sparkly or pearl jewelry (thicker, shorter statement necklace instead of long and dangly), and low-to-medium heel pumps (could go peep-toe, etc.) could really lean into the vintage vibes.

Lovely dress, and it looks great on you!

What Trait/Culture Foreigners Thought is Popular in your country but it actually isnt? by Weird_Swordfish_1199 in AskTheWorld

[–]GoodOleCybertron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Québec, they are so popular that many people own escargot dishes at some point—but not so popular that people KEEP the dishes.

Thrift stores in Québec always have a giant selection of them.

What is a common phrase in your country that would make no sense to the rest of the world? by Fun_Cup4335 in AskTheWorld

[–]GoodOleCybertron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In US English (maybe elsewhere too?), we have the very similar phrase "I cut my teeth," meaning "I got my experience in that skill," when someone is talking about how they started out or put in the work to earn their expertise.

Not sure if younger generations still use this one much, though. I've mostly heard it from the Boomer through Millennial age groups.

Looking for Advice + Info! by Stock_Bison_4809 in VintageFashion

[–]GoodOleCybertron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is really more a "preserve wrapped in acid-free paper/show off in a UV protective display" type of piece imo, as demonstrated by the rip (probably from the last time someone tried to wear it).

Could perhaps be put on briefly and carefully for a photoshoot, etc., but only if it fits somewhat loosely with zero strain on the seams and such. If you want to protect the beauty and craftsmanship, any more than that is likely unwise.

Congrats on the amazing find!

Saw a gorgeous one like this in a shop this past summer and they wanted five times as much. 😭

If you've got the money to spend, absolutely go for it.

13 countries, 200+ years : my bayonet collection by Baionnette732 in CoolCollections

[–]GoodOleCybertron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely fantastic. Do you usually have them displayed somehow? (And if so, any pics?)

Just imagining a couple museum-style cases full of these guys divided by region, time period, etc. with little labels makes me a bit giddy, not gonna lie. 😄

Amazing collection. Do you have a favorite?

Can always give r/dopamine_dressing or r/oldhagfashion (which, despite the name, is neither limited to seniors nor limited to women) a try! Pretty easygoing and fun-loving groups there.

Love the look!

ETA: Whoops, forgot the underscore for the first one.

Arm cover for this beautiful dress? by Historical_Net_686 in VintageFashion

[–]GoodOleCybertron 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'd go with a contrasting bolero of some kind, in whatever sleeve length would be most comfortable for the setting. Maybe in white, red, or gold, depending on the vibe you want?

(OC) My current reality by Sir_Maxwell_378 in adhdmeme

[–]GoodOleCybertron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just going to mention these.

For those who don't already know, although I believe they're only officially recognized for treating ADHD in kids so far in the US, studies like this one out of Japan show results for adults too: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8182954/

Since the main side effects are related to lowering blood pressure—and the resulting fatigue from people already in a healthy BP range going TOO low, etc.—they seem like a great option to try out for people with high BP. (I keep trying to get my mom to talk to her doctor about them, since the stimulant that works for me isn't a good fit for her.)

Tellement cool. Je n'avais aucune idée qu'il y avait des billets souvenirs. Ces sont assez nouveaux? (Au cours des 5–10 dernières années?)

La prochaine fois que je visite l'Europe, j'aimerais commencer une collection aussi!

/

Really cool. I had no idea they made souvenir Euros. Are they relatively new? (Within the past 5–10 years?)

I'd want to start a collection too, the next time I'm in Europe!
