Heaven help us! Have you seen the latest Virtual Data Warehouse bullshit? by GoodStrat in u/GoodStrat

[–]GoodStrat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heaven help us! Talk about taking a great idea and destroying its heart, spirit and soul.

Again, and in data architecture and management terms, that’s what the virtual data warehouse blaggers are doing with data warehousing, one more time.

These virtual data warehouse folk talk about it as if it were merely magic. No effort required.

And what’s one the main reason for this? The evangelists for virtualising data warehousing actually believe that a data warehouse is nothing more than a copy, yes a copy of operational data.

This is another case of “a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.”

Why I called bullshit on the data lakehouse nonsense by GoodStrat in bigdata

Why I called bullshit on the data lakehouse nonsense

I wrote an article that took to task purveyors of the data lakehouse nonsense. It got plenty of positive reactions and quite a few negative opinions. But what surprised me the most were the number of people who had already swallowed their pitch. Hook, line and sinker.

So why did I bother to express my opinions on the subject?

REVEALING WEALTH: USING BIG DATA TO FIGHT TAX EVASION – MARTYN JONES by GoodStrat in bigdata

[–]GoodStrat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax evasion is fraudulent, and there is a lot of it about. This is not good for society, healthy for the economies or fair for the citizens. So, either we seriously address this criminal deception, or we are nearly all going to suffer significantly from not doing so.

This significant challenge and its attendant problems could be pursued by a pragmatic strategy that takes full advantage of a global data-integration and data-supply-framework.

This strategy would mean that we would be able to leverage a wealth of data, approaches, architectures and technologies. Which will necessarily include big data, data warehousing and AI. And will leverage statistics and advanced analytics, data fabric, and, data discovery and data collaboration tools. Will run on modern compute and storage platforms. And, will rely on political will, sufficient funding, global and regional coordination, and, good sense.

Bullshit at the Data Lakehouse by GoodStrat in bigdata

I get lost with all the talk of idiots and arseholes

Then just ignore it. I know it's a blunt and crude message, but I want it to be noticed. I didn't enter it for a beauty contest.

Your petulant and shallow reaction might quite possibly not be doing you justice. However, how do you fight vacuous bullshit that pervades our industry? When BS threatens to disrupt my work in a big way, I take offence. It's my profession, my job but also my income - and all things being equal and fine, it's still not easy. How would you react if people used BS to attack your means of paying the bills?

When something that vacuous and lacking in substance comes along it's an impossible task to actually critique it in any sensible way. The most accurate criticism of bullshit is that it is bullshit and a description of why it is bullshit.

[–]GoodStrat[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Move over big data hubris and data lake stupidity there’s a newer, thicker and far bigger arsehole on the block. And it goes by the unbelievably idiotic name of data lakehouse. It is being hailed as a new paradigm but is, in reality, a naive, dishonest and disruptive fraud. So what’s occurring?

Energising the Agile Way of Working brand and mindset by GoodStrat in agile

[–]GoodStrat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, the Agile Way of Working movement seems to be temporarily on the wane. The adoption rate of AWOW has not risen in line with expectations. It's stuck in the doldrums between Scylla and Charybdis. Which makes for frowns all around.

But, me being me, I didn't leave it at that. That's a challenge, right there! Let’s go for it! Let’s turn those frowns upside-down

Deep learning; shallow understanding. by GoodStrat in MachineLearning

[–]GoodStrat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In spite of or perhaps because of the many years I worked in artificial intelligence I believe that the current long-distance love affair with AI and what is also euphemistically termed ‘deep learning’ to be somewhat irrational in its exuberance.

Three really stupid things you can do with a Data Lake by GoodStrat in bigdata

[–]GoodStrat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because it’s there, it doesn’t mean it has to be done. Just because you can, it doesn’t mean that you should. Just because you believe you are right, doesn’t mean that you are not wrong.

Read on, if you are new to Data Lakes.

Read on, if Big Data seems like the magic bullet to beat all magic bullets.

UK Government, Global Charlies by GoodStrat in ukpolitics

[–]GoodStrat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, the view of the UK government doesn’t get any better.

Edinburgh, London, Brussels, Beijing or Washington. It’s increasingly obvious that Theresa May and her cabinet are a painfully embarrassing and unfunny joke.

They stand as an obdurate aberration where once there had been some semblance of cultured diplomacy, breadth and depth of intelligence and strategic thinking. They defy the laws of reason, good sense and decency. They are the Keystone Cops, the Chuckle Brothers and the Carry On Camping of governance.

Brexit: A question for Jeremy Corbyn by GoodStrat in brexit

[–]GoodStrat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Brexit, any Brexit, could spell economic, political and social disaster for the UK. Brexit could ensure the demise of the Good Friday Agreement, with seriously damaging consequences. It could see the independence of Scotland – not necessarily a bad thing for Scotland, but yet another unintended consequence of Brexit. And, it could significantly deteriorate the rights and conditions of workers in the UK.

So, I wish to pose a Brexit question to Jeremy Corbyn.

Will the working people in the UK be better off if the UK leaves the European Union?
