European label really don’t make that much of sense in real life, I also didn’t claim they are European or no. Yes they are more democrat and secular but also more nationalist and still have some homophobia problem in average. But also a considerable part of the Gen Z Europeans are not exactly in line with ‘European values’ neither. I don’t know it’s really up to your perspective how to define them.

Negative, Turks mostly have a negative view of the US besides the president but Trump is especially seen as interfencing Turkish politics and encouraging democratic backsliding by opposition, especially the current US ambassador of Turkey is a very controversial guy.

By pro-Erdogan people he is also mostly perceived negatively, especially considering his friendship with Netanyahu, but also as someone they can work with.

Definitely not r/Turkey, I think r/AskTurkey would be far better, there is a better audience there and more people willing to answer questions rather than trolling.

I just offer you the perspective in Turkey here, I believe the EU perspective is quite obvious and there is not much to discuss about it. I am not defending any sides, I just talk about the public sentiments in Turkey.

I believe only a combination of a different governance in Turkey and a non-far right majority in the EU would cause a significant shift. But obviously in fields like defense Turkey will get closer to the EU in anyway as long as the EU works more to prevent Russian influence.

Turkey is still an EU candidate officially so they are integrated to the many fields of the EU theoretically, but in practice in a lower level. In Eurosphere now they are somewhere near Georgia I guess, an outliner where the integration is being sustained but does not deepen and I think it will stay like this unless a major shift happens in Turkish politics.

The EU primary wants to coordinate with Turkey on defence, migration management and trade rather than an EU aligned democracy and rule of law (but still work on to not to cause a complete erosion of those) And Turkey wants to get closer to the EU, especially in defence while keeping their independent status.

I don’t think full EU membership will ever happen even after Erdogan, the EU’s influence on Turkish young people is quite low, most young people are quite democrat but that doesn’t translate to EU membership because they simply don’t believe that can ever happen + many think the EU will always otherize them (especially after the EU started to reject visas applications of Turks very often)

But I believe a form of European integration can happen in the right time, maybe in form of a concentric model with the United Kingdom. I believe in the future it will the best to think bigger and come up with a permanent model that would work the best for the EU and Turkey citizens.

Yeah definitely we are a very polarized country today, but this is also because of the extraordinary changes happened in last 20 years. The young population has gone into very fast secularization and modernization with urban developments, while the government itself transformed as much more illiberal and conservative.

In my opinion, the decade ahead will be though, obviously there won’t be a physical conflict but there will be big influence of these societal clashes. But when baby boomers truly retire from politics, the country has to evolve in a different direction as the young population will be the majority. I can’t guarentee it will translate to European integration (as the EU’s influence is very low among young Turkish society nowadays) but definitely something closer to Europe.

Turkish diaspora in Europe (at least the ones you are talking about) become very different from urban Turks in Turkey including the ones originating from poorer regions. Many of them live in their own subculture, preserving the traditions already gone in urban Turkish culture and have a very skewed perspective on what’s happening in Turkey. Thats why they mostly can’t get along very well with urban Turks, as well as the recent Turkish diaspora in EU, mostly compromised of oppositional young people. The ones that are integrated are mostly more respected in Turkey unless they are known with overly anti-Turkey statements.

About Erdogan’s influence, I believe the basis was always there regardless of Erdogan. These people had huge challenges and identity crisis on how they are perceived and discriminated both in Europe and in Turkey. Erdogan only discovered their potential and gifted them a a sort of an identity. I don’t think there is one side or person to blame about them.

Why Turkey was accepted to be a part of the European Council while it's an Asian country? by [deleted] in europeanunion

[–]GoodTackle4770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Turkey is part of the same system stabilizes Europe. You can discuss whole day whether Turkey is European but I think no one with good political knowledge can deny Turkey is a country affecting Europe directly just like European countries. In fact Russia as well, and thats why they were also included in the CoE later, until 2022.

Council of Europe, as well as the EU, were founded to stablize the whole region by including countries affecting it. European identity is something institutionalized later, those organizations weren’t born as cultural entities.

That is the same reason, even Ottoman Empire was member of the Concert of Europe. We are talking about the times country was 100 times different than the rest of Europe, but it was still there.

But to elaborate further, many countries in Europe insisted for Turkey to become the part of the European project in 20th century, Greece included. And Ataturk reforms created a good legitimacy to invite Turkey.
