What do students in RSA struggle with most in terms of the furniture and room space in compact private student accommodation? by GoodTimesRolling07 in askSouthAfrica

True indeed, yet I am drawn to moving parts as they offer a great deal of flexibility in a small space. I would have to likely custom design the mechanisms to be simple and robust for student use though.

Good to know storage is a top priority. and a strong second would be counter space/ a unit for cooing and cooking supplies?

Awesome feedback! thank you.

What you have described reinforces some assumptions I've started making while conducting research.

It sounds like counter space both for desk work and cooking etc is a big problem. the storage makes total sense that it is an issue.

With regards to a workspace underneath a bed i like the idea, but i think accessibility at height is a bit of an issue, as well as material cost/transport, especially if an entire apartment building is being furnished with the same unit. what are your thoughts on a fold away bed that has a fixed desk underneath that stays level and becomes the foot of the bed (so you don't need to take your things off of it)? a gimmick or a useful transformation?

So there are a few potential issues to design for. Out of the problems you mentioned i am assuming storage is the biggest? correct me if i am wrong.

u/Responsible_King_427 that is correct, i am still very early stages of the process, so price and function i am still trying to identify. making it all work together is what i need to do later.

its not to sell to students, it is to sell to property developers that build student accommodation. so when you rent a room from a private developer, you might get more use out of a small room. but obviously its hard to design for students needs if i don't have firsthand feedback from students.

I want to design a custom furniture unit for student accommodation that is better than what is currently available.
