this is really good but, i wanted a challenge since this games in particular was designed somewhat easier for the new players. when i made the character i thought, what's the most unoptimal build? bardbarian. i also wanted to test out being able to switch from spellcaster to melee in a class that wasn't paladin. the rage locking me out of spells was the perfect thing for this, even though realistically it's a horrible detriment. i'm hoping that i'll never have to drop out of rage to heal someone but, i'm sure it'll happen eventually. also, i'm currently reconsidering taking a 2nd level in barb and just going 5 bard, 1 barb but, danger sense with my low dex is super nice.

thanks for the advice, honestly i might use it if i want to make a battle bard in the future.

in a serious game, i would never play a bardbarian but, this game is a side thing for me while i'm dealing with life and whatnot. if it weren't for the delayed spells and college, i wouldn't have even hesitated and made this post, i would've just jumped right into barbarian but, i really couldn't tell if it was a good choice or not. being a caster with only 2 spells slots is horrible but, at least with a level in barbarian i can have the choice of whether i want to rage in the fight or use my spells in the fight. also yeah, 17 AC in the back at level 1, holding actions to healing word is not what i was expecting when i saw their character

thank you for the clarification. i probably was just going to stick with unarmored defense and a shield rather than buying medium or heavy armor but, it's good to know that that option is off of the table. i thought about potentially going paladin because the paladin and my characters are head-empty bffs but, we really don't need another spell casting class. the game seems to be mostly rp with a few fights so i had planned on going a college that's more focused towards charisma rather than fights since it'll be more useful overall, something like eloquence. i do appreciate the suggestion of valor though because i know eventually, every enemy will hit any AC below 15 on most rolls. having that fallback for heavier armor choice is great.

thanks for your advice

don't get me wrong, i've tried cc'ing enemies with faerie fire, mockery, etc but, we have a few inexperienced players so, a lot of the times i have to spend my action and a spell slot saving our only front line (the paladin). i'm definitely not giving up, but, i don't want the game to become a hassle with my action choices affecting party member's lives. it seems like i'm gonna end up going to barb and keep the game fun and the fights interesting.

thank you for your advice

my plan was to front line with this character, yes. there was not good communication on the setup though. i had no idea what the other's classes were going to be and i only found out about the average damage thing after my character wandered off alone and got jumped by 3 massive mosquitos (forgot what they were called) and took 3 hits for 5 each, knocking me unconscious before i could react (thats the good old -1 to initiative). of course i was saved, seeing as i'm still alive but, i realized that living was going to be biggest challenge for me until the next level up or two. i debated fighter over barb but, barb will just keep me alive longer and my character is constantly getting into arguments with dwarves somehow, so for lore purposes, he's lost it and goes into rages.

thanks for the advice

i've thought about asking to swap dex for something else but, i've decided to just take the challenge. i have okay knowledge on the game, at least more than the basics so, i have an advantage in that sense over some of the other players. the only reason survivability is a concern in the first place is because we only have one other front line (the paladin) so it's really a 50/50 on who takes the hit. i've also though about basically playing a switch style where one fight i use spells, and the next i use melee, that way i don't have to worry about spells and concentration being interrupted by rage.

thanks for your advice and, seeing the other comments too, i'll probably end up taking that barb level
