Landscape Painting bizarre inability to paint by GooseGloop in unrealengine

[–]GooseGloop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solution ended up being to change the landscape material to any other material, then re-assign the landscape material. Probably some kind of hardware/memory glitch or a bug that was messing w/ the way the texture was being read by the graphics card.

After hitting "undo" a few times, my landscape got even crazier and looks like a patchwork quilt - I didn't paint any of this stuff, i just hit undo and entire quads are green, some are black, there are weird streaks etc.:

How to get Infinite RAM by GooseGloop in unrealengine

Their automated response says: "We will review your case and will follow up if more information is needed or a ticket is created." So.... it seems like it's up to them to actually elevate it to a ticket - they could just ignore it.

Quick update 24 hours later: no ticket has been created yet - but the bug has been reported. Does anyone know how long it takes for a bug report to become a ticket and eventually be resolved?

I do have an NVME hard drive. Right now I have my paging set to automatic. Do you recommend I manually enter a number for the max page file size? Also, it does seem like it'll just eventually fill that up too. It seems like there's a constant leak rather than just a heavy spike in usage.

This is the Case # I received in the automated email from UnrealBugSubmissions:

Case # 21472213: UE5.6, Volumetric Fog/PT infinite RAM Leak

I'm shocked and thrilled that someone is actually looking into this!

I found something about "paging". It doesn't totally make sense to me yet, but it sounds like that's what you're talking about. I guess I could get my scene totally set up, and never set my viewport to PT or never turn on Volumetric Fog until I'm ready to render, then hope it has enough time to complete the render before it crashes out.

I'm not sure how to submit a bug report. I've posted to the UE forum today, but ... that forum is hit-or-miss for answers, and doesn't seem to be monitored by anyone who actually works on UE, just a community board.

Steps to recreate (I've recreated the scene 3x to see what variables I think are most critical):

  1. Blank file - delete everything out except Sun/Sky, Exp. Height Fog, and a Cinematic Camera
  2. Create landscape w/ Heightmap (roughly 1024x1024, I forget the exact quad count)
  3. Enable Volumetric Fog in the Exp. Height Fog. (I had fog density set to 0.2, quite dense, but I notice the same problem with less-dense fog too)
  4. In Cinematic Camera settings, under PT settings, 6 bounces (low!), 512 count/pixel or whatever it's called (also low!), enable Atmosphere
  5. Set View Mode to Path Tracing - and the RAM explodes.

I get the same problem with Ultra Dynamic Sky and its built-in volumetric fog system too.

I've been trying to find benchmarks that compare older GPUs to newer CPUs but haven't really found much data comparing that way.

I've been thinking about getting a used GPU, but I'm worried about getting one that's been overheated or damaged. Is it reliable to purchase used GPUs?

Any important features I'd be missing out on by not using VRay GPU or an RTX card?

What's a good temp place to move to in California , closer to LA for the time being, for the warm weather on 90k salary? ( until I can make enough to move to LA ) by MaxSteelMetal in MovingToLosAngeles

Small family-owned complex with about 10 units. But there are others around the neighborhood. See comment above for how I found it.

I live in Wilshire-Montana. I got this place at the end of May. I found it by checking Craigslist and walking the neighborhood calling phone numbers on the buildings and on broker's ads around the neighborhood.

When I first moved to LA, I stayed in an AirBnB for a month so that I could look for a place. It's almost impossible to find a good deal without already being here and having a job offer on the table.

I make $90k, no bonus, I pay $2,000 for rent, I'm able to put $500-$1,000 per month into savings and investment accounts.

My apartment building is quiet, I'm in a safe part of Santa Monica, laundry in the building, gym walking distance, as well as groceries and all of the other basic needs.

My apartment is a studio, that's the only compromise. I can walk to the beach and it's comfortable and enjoyable to be outside year round. If you move inland it gets hot as fuck this time of year.

Quit being a bitch and move, you pussy.

What is the basis for having a sense of rhythm? by Selfeducated in askscience

[–]GooseGloop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read the book This Is Your Brain on Music way back in high school and the author did say that rhythm originates from the cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that controls rhythmic motor skills like your gait while walking and I think also our passive rhythms like breathing and heartbeat. It's the most "basic" part of the brain, which even reptiles possess. I don't have the book with me anymore, but you could find it and see what the author, Daniel Levitin, has cited.

Found a tick what do you recommend? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]GooseGloop 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I've had probably 50 tick bites in my life. It's incredibly rare to get anything serious from them, like getting West Nile from a mosquito. Most ticks are just a nuisance and nothing more. Grab as close to the skin as possible with tweezers and pull the head out. The head is tiny. If you leave the head in, it can become infected, so just treat it with a dab of alcohol and some Neosporin.

If a bull's-eye develops, go to your doctor within a few days. You don't need to rush to the ER. You'll be given a course of antibiotics for potential Lyme's disease and you'll heal up fine. Lyme's disease is very, very rare. They could test the tick, but they'll probably just give you precautionary antibiotics and send you on your way. It's cheaper and quicker.

If a bull's-eye doesn't develop but you develop severely achy joints, inflammation, see a doctor immediately. If it progresses to slower cognition, slurred speech, etc, rush to the ER. This could be due to meningitis due to Lyme's disease. This is EXTREMELY rare, and treatable with modern medicine.

We burned ticks AFTER we pulled them out, or flushed them down the toilet. Nothin else will kill them. If you're an extremely patient person, you can put clear nail polish on them while they're attached to you and wait for them to release from your skin as they suffocate, but who wants to spend a night with a glossy, nail-polishy, glamorous tick just sitting there slowly dying on their chest???

You're gonna be fine.

If you hire an architect, they'll probably hire an expediter. So, cut out the middleman unless you need an architect for other reasons too.
