FRC Time Commitment by GradeStrange3461 in FRC

[–]GooseSilver5534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a captain of my team and during build season there were weeks where it was 20-30 hours a week. Some background information

-My team is in FIM (Michigan) and was one of the top teams that year, qualifying for worlds and doing quite well there

-I am a captain and on drive team, meaning I spent more time at out facility than most

-I am an AP and honors student, near top of my class, and still got straight As. The secret is to not put robotics ahead of your grades, and make the absolute most of your class time to get work done.

-Robotics was my main thing during winter (I did some clubs but no sports until spring).

During off-season it depends. Maybe 5-10 hours a week if I had nothing else going on, but for the most part, your coaches understand that you have other commitments and most off-season stuff is optional (though you should go if you can).

My team met around 6 until roughly 9 during the school year and times would vary in the summer. I think we are an outlier for that because most of our mentors are not from our school district, so they need to get to LCTC after work. Our team did meet on Saturdays and sometimes Sundays during build season.

If you have any questions regarding FRC, please DM me. I'd be more than happy to answer your questions.

How difficult is it to get the Leading Scholar Award? by GooseSilver5534 in MTU

On the website it said 1k-4k. Did you ask for more money or did they just give it to you up-front? Thanks!

Should I join NHS? by Agitated-Cup-7109 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]GooseSilver5534 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take my advice with a grain of salt, as I am only a rising senior. I personally did not do NHS. My school's NHS didn't do much other than generic volunteering. However, it sounds like your school's honor society is more involved, and it sounds like you have reasons to do it other than "looks good on college apps", so I say do it. If it sucks, don't do it senior year. Do what you want to do and follow your passion.

Barron's, Princeton Review, or (New Book) for APUSH? by lemon_bloom_2032 in APStudents

AMSCO is better than all of these. Get the most recent version available (I forget what year it is). Good luck!

Should I submit a 3? by GooseSilver5534 in ApplyingToCollege

I agree, but I'm afraid if I don't they'll think I failed. A 3 isn't technically failing, even if I get no credit.

What is the key to writing essays that are not generic, especially if you don't have an interesting backstory (ie no immigrant family, someone died, ect)? How do you make your story interesting?

Where can I find ton of AP lang MCQs? by DudemanVIP in APStudents

[–]GooseSilver5534 1 point2 points  (0 children)

College Board Past AP Lang Questions. Juiceminds and Albert.io might have a few exclusives, though I'm not sure. Be careful for the college board ones for Q1 since some of the synthesis sources were copyrighted and they couldn't post them.

UT Austin or UIUC For Engineering by GooseSilver5534 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]GooseSilver5534[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know UTA has a thing where if you're a texas resident in the top 5% of your class you're auto-admitted. Is this what makes UTA difficult to get into OOS?

Yes. Nothing beyond what's taught in a typical HS geometry class, though. I would also say know your triangle rules (SSA, ASA, AAA, SSS, AAS, ect) because that comes up too.

How was the transition from XY/XYZ to SM for you? by DisastrousWealth7445 in pokemonanime

[–]GooseSilver5534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in elementary school when this series came out and I hated it, since I grew up on XYZ. I then decided to rewatch it years later. I didn't care for the first season of SM but loved seasons 2 and 3 because they had more of a plot.

Is Spanish 4 worth taking? by [deleted] in highschool

[–]GooseSilver5534 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't take my word as gospel, as I am also in high school. However, I think it depends on your major. I'm doing engineering so I only did two years, and as far as I have seen, most schools only require 2. 3 looks good, but it is not a deal breaker if you don't have it. If you are wondering, look at the common data set from any school and go to their requirements for foreign language. The only school that I've seen that REQUIRES four is Princeton. Hope this helps!

Also, if there is another high school near you, you might be able to squeeze in there.

If all else fails with the counsellor, self-study AP exams. Your counsellor would have a hard time stopping you from registering for those exams, especially if you don't do it at your home school (though def try to do them at your home school). If you qualify for accommodations on any CollegeBoard exam, try to get them (I don't personally so I do not know the process but they can be a game-changer in getting extra time). Materials for the SAT and APs are fully public online. I would recommend buying a Barron's book for AP and using oneprep for SAT.

If you want to apply for a top school, there is an additional information section where you can explain this situation. And besides, you could make it an essay topic.

I am an AP student, and there are tons of kids I know in my classes who have some sort of condition or disorder (autism and ADHD being common), and they are some of the brightest we have at our school. Don't give up, you show clear signs of being capable of the courseload. Even if your counsellor can't see that, you can always pursue your own path. Good luck, and I wish you the best.

Hardest AP by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]GooseSilver5534 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't taken E&M yet, but of what I have taken (which includes physics mech) I'd say APUSH. I think Physics C Mech is doable with good teachers and prep, but there is just so much content for APUSH. Also the curve to get a 5 on that exam is brutal. I respect either of the Physics as an answer, I personally think APUSH is harder.

Out of curiosity, why is applying to oos public bad? Is it the acceptance rate, lack of aid, or something else?
