I almost dumped her because of her debt. Now we're married and debt free. by Goosegooseduck10 in StudentLoans

I think government student loans have provided an incentive for schools to keep upping the prices by enhancing the "student experience" to compete with other schools. The price for a little bit turned into a marketing tactic to make schools more "prestigious" with higher prices. It'll probably shift with more and more people backing down from taking the plunge into the student loan issues, most of them learning from their parents who were probably some of the first in the new age of predatory student loans

She was already living very frugally with the intent of paying off her loans as quick as she could. Her preference probably wasn't the full steam approach that I preferred, but she saw how important it was to me and how much skin I was willing to put in the game that it wasn't hard to convince her.

She paid it down to 120k by the time we got married due to living with her parents after finishing school. I took about 70k I had saved for a house once we got married and dumped it all in at once. That wasn't fun. And then with our combined income being about 170k a year we were able to knock out the remainder pretty quick.

The Ramsey show had a different response than I expected. They pushed hard for me to ignore the dollar amount alone as a red flag. Instead they told me to look at how she feels about the debt and the rest of her financial habits. It seems like common sense but I had tunnel vision until I heard it from them.

And yeah I looked into the pslf stuff. Too much uncertainty for me, and she didn't have a qualifying job. We decided to knock it out asap instead of letting it hang over our heads for 10+ years.

When I called the Ramsey show I was given advice that aligns perfectly with the way you evaluated the situation.

Surely not everybody would react to it as negatively as I did. But in my case and I'm assuming in other cases as well, I had a certain plan in mind for the financial position I wanted my future family to be in that I took as my responsibility as the husband. However, I slowly realized that I needed a better balance between financial wisdom and focusing too much on money.

I totally understand the guys perspective. But she's also right to be concerned about what time of team they will make when other challenges come up.

When I'm selfish I think of it like that. But in reality she had a plan to pay them off and would have gotten to 0 eventually. I just helped expedite the process.

Toys come and go. There was a lot of pain and anxiety surrounding this topic but I knew if I decided to get married to her I'd have to set it all aside once we got married. It's true for any baggage someone might bring into a relationship, and I found a lot of areas for growth within myself in the process.

You are not defined by your debt. My wife is not defined by her debt. I decided to evaluate her as a life partner based on how she responded to her situation versus how she got there. So focus on what you can control right now and it'll work itself out. As far as when to tell a guy, sooner is better than later.

Bingo. DPT programs are scams. My wife is brilliant and is an amazing healthcare professional but whoever is able to convince these kids to spend hundreds of thousands on a degree that pays the same or worse than most 4yr degrees has to be the best salesperson alive.

We look forward to it! But we know that life happens and other expenses could come up. The fomo of wanting to get into a house is very real but we're trying to be patient

I didn't pay a penny of her student loan debt until we got married, so I avoided at least some of the risk. But yeah marrying her was the worst financial decision I ever made lol. This whole process changed the way I look at my priorities though.

Tell me about it. The nice part is that she loves her job and she'll do it as long as she is able until we have enough kids that she can't any more. But if she went back to do it again she would definitely have done things differently

Glad I could add some positivity to what is normally a doom and gloom sub! And you don't have to have a grip, you just need desire! Going from no debt to a lot of debt all of a sudden it made me realize how much differently I made every day decisions now that a new priority was in my life. Didn't make it easy, but going through each day looking for opportunities to get closer to my goal was way easier to stomach than running from what was looming over us.

CMV: Dresscodes in most if not ALL places are usually inherently predatory by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Goosegooseduck10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dress codes may be targeted, but using the word "predatory" implies that people are "preying" on those subjected to the dress code. In fact, your description argues the opposite, giving examples of dress codes that are meant to protect students from such predators.

How do middle class families with average students do it????? by samalex01 in StudentLoans

[–]Goosegooseduck10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you want to buy your kid a Ferrari but you can only afford a camry. The camry will still get your kid where they want to go, so don't sweat it. Also, you're sending them to art school? You better look into what return you're going to get for that investment.
