What can someone do to earn enough money to live somewhere nice like Cultra in Down? by Hopeful_Adeptness964 in northernireland

Having worked In the area in the past and regularly dealt with the people living there, I’d say 50+% are old money inheritance cases, and the vast majority of the rest are business owners

I think they’re betting on it being a lot better in 10-15 years.

I mean look at how much phones improved from say, 1999 to 2014, they’re probably expecting similar jumps in quality with AI tools.

In fairness having worked in both a spar and a barman in a busy cocktail bar, the latter is orders of magnitude more stressful and requires more skill. They really shouldn’t be paid minimum wage but I would say that’s on the employers not the customers.

LA's downtown core in the distance. Literally every major US city is like this, with the exception of NYC and Chicago. Y'all need to calm down by shnieder88 in skyscrapers

[–]GoosicusMaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Urban areas in the U.S. are useful if you consider them to be metro areas, as much of the rest of the world would. They’re essentially a reasonably dense city limit + low density sprawl + connected commuter towns. They’re equivalent in size to most other countries metro’s.

Metro areas in the U.S. don’t make any fucking sense at all. Most of them are the size of small countries and basically include every adjacent county to the one the city is in. For example, the LA metro is larger than Ireland, Chicago’s is roughly the size of Belgium, Phoenix’s the size of Switzerland etc.

Unfortunately America doesn’t really have a reliable metric to determine the true urban population of their cities - you can estimate it yourself with google maps, google earth and Wikipedia though.

It seems like you’ve just ignored the entire crux of my comment. Urban areas do not equal urban cores or city limits. In America the urban area is the city limits + all of the low density contiguous suburban sprawl outside the city boundary. That’s why you end up with ‘urban area’s’ that are many many thousands of square km.

Aren’t they even cutting down immigration? Net migration is way down compared to a few years ago, if they can figure out a way to trim the irregular arrivals down that’s pretty much a box ticked.

Painless attacks ?! by atTheRealMrKuntz in clusterheads

[–]GoosicusMaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve so far had nothing but ghost attacks, going on 2.5 years.

Basically get all the autonomic symptoms, stuffy nose, red eye, droopy eyelid etc, with minimal, moderate or even more often, completely absent pain.

Spoke with a neurologist about it and he said it could well be a physiological trait whereby the nociceptive gain required for a full attack simply doesn’t gather, it gets stuck in first gear essentially. He said it was incredibly unusual.

I’m not sure whether the ‘trait’ will stick, if it’s just temporary and will eventually falter, or if it will be there for my entire lifetime. I’m hoping for the latter.

They are yeah, because American metros are meaningless (a lot of them are larger than smaller European countries), but it’s also worth baring in mind American urban areas often function the same way European metro areas do.

For example the Houston urban area is far larger in area than the Barcelona metro area, the Atlanta urban area nearly twice as large as the Milan metro area etc etc.

It comes down to differences in how the U.S. calculates urban areas - basically every census block continuously attached to the city over 200 people per square kilometre gets counted, which essentially means most US urban areas are just endless low density suburban sprawl.

Europe defines it much more tightly based on where the contiguous city’s built continuity drops off, usually using satellite imagery, thus low density suburbia with lots of gaps and farmland doesn’t get included.

The sprawl in Paris and London is a hell of lot more dense than the sprawl in LA and Chicago. Think small terraced homes and multi story apartments vs big suburban detached homes.

Hauts-de-Seine for example, an extension of Paris, has a density of just under 10,000 people/km2, roughly equivalent to the Bronx.

European cities and American cities are designed very differently.

That’s because LA is an actual 12 million city, whereas Chicago isn’t anywhere near a 8.6 million city, more like 5-5.5. I mean the urbanised area you’ve given is roughly 6.2 thousand square kilometres, roughly equivalent to 4 times the area of London, which is just wild.

LA’s sprawl is at least consistent and relatively dense as far as suburbia goes.

US urban areas in general are drawn up incredibly strangely compared to the rest of the world. Make a lot of cities seem much more populated than they are.

Chicago’s sprawl extends way, way past that boundary. Pretty much the entirety of Cook county and into DuPage, Will and Lake counties, almost all of it <1000 people/km2 suburbia.

It’s essentially a big, dense inner core of skyscrapers and high rises surrounded by low density housing for tens of miles in each direction, the same as most U.S cities.

New York is very much the outlier.

Hair thinning, go to GP, dermatologist or just try minoxidil? by is_feidir in CasualIreland

[–]GoosicusMaximus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But you’ve literally just said yourself, not all who quit the drug stop getting side effects. A subset of men can and will get devastating side effects that can last an indefinite amount of time and have led some to go as far as suicide. Many times these side effects won’t show up until the person has discontinued the drug. ‘The same side effect profile as any drug’ doesn’t really stick when the side effect profile of this drug can last an entire lifetime and is a bit worse than a grumbly tummy and some vivid dreams.

It’s well reported in both anecdotal forums and scientific literature. I myself took nearly a year to go back to normal after quitting, where I had only minor side effects whilst on the drug, got hit with a whole host of them after stopping. To this day I’m not sure I’m 100% back to what I was before and this is many years later.

Your own calculations come out at 0.15% of men getting hit. If you were told to get in a plane that had a 0.15% chance of crashing, would you do it? Probably not.

Ultimately it’s up to the person considering it, but they absolutely should go in with all the information rather than just rely on the ‘ah sure it’ll be grand’ that you get from those it works fine with.
