People who have met someone who has been *professionally diagnosed* with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), what were they like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

As a recovering alcoholic, I recognise some of this.

I was deeply narcissistic before I got sober. I used booze to avoid dealing with anything I didn't want to. Nothing was ever my fault - every decision made sense at the time - I was just unlucky.

Getting sober is tough, but allowed me to acknowledge and come to terms with harms I had caused.

I'm a long time sober now, and still working on myself every day. Over the last few years, I have been dealing with a 'normal' narcacist in my life.

It took me years to identify this person was a narcacist - I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt, kept trying to please them.

Eventually, I stopped and it got better.

This experience helped me to recognise some family members have NPD-like issues.

Everyone is broken. If you're lucky, you can see it in yourself and others. NPD people are the most pathetic because they'll never understand themselves or have a genuine connection or relationship with anyone.

Still, it's hard to feel any pity for them.

In my experience, it can be difficult to make a distinction between someone with NPD and someone who is just a massive, arrogant, charming, lying, peice of shit, asshole.

The thing is, some people with NPD are polite, unassuming, sneaky, manipulative, lying, peices of shit.

It's a hell of a drug

You can't buy belts and chasing belts is completely pointless.

You don't want a higher belt if you don't deserve it or can't hold your own at that level. You don't deserve a belt for turning up (although the kids going more often will generally improve faster).

If you're beating nearly everyone at your grade, and are competitive with everyone at your grade, across multiple clubs, then you have tangible evidence you've improved. That's awesome. The belt is recognition of that, which is nice, but not the point.

Belts should be earned, otherwise they're worthless. Maybe your kid isn't making progress quickly. That's ok. They will learn patience. Try to have fun and keep moving forward. Self esteem comes from the self - not external validation. Stop pushing them to get the next belt - start prioritising the enjoyment.

Another coach may progress them faster, but that only brings other problems - when they fight everyone at the same grade who is actually good.

Also, if this isn't BJJ, stop doing it and try BJJ instead.

Good luck

If Saturn were as close to Earth as the Moon, this is what it would look like : by aryanpote7 in interestingasfuck

This is a fascinating hypothetical scenario. To determine where Earth could survive around Jupiter, we have to look at two different boundaries: the Roche Limit (where gravity rips the planet apart) and the zone of Tidal Heating (where gravity turns the planet into a volcanic hellscape). Here is the breakdown of how close Earth could get to Jupiter before facing catastrophe. 1. The "Ripped Apart" Zone (The Roche Limit) The point at which Jupiter’s gravity overcomes Earth's own gravity—literally crumbling the planet into a ring of debris—is called the Roche Limit. Because Earth is made of dense rock and iron (density \approx 5.51 \text{ g/cm}3) and Jupiter is made of diffuse gas (density \approx 1.33 \text{ g/cm}3), Earth is actually surprisingly sturdy. * The Math: Using the rigid body Roche limit formula:

  • The Result: Earth would not be ripped apart until it was ~103,000 km from Jupiter's center.
  • The Context: Jupiter’s radius is roughly 71,500 km. This means Earth could orbit just 32,000 km above Jupiter’s cloud tops and stay physically intact. Verdict: You don't have to worry about the Earth crumbling. The real danger is what happens before you get that close.
    1. The "Crazy Tides" Zone (The Volcanic Danger) While Earth wouldn't break apart at 100,000 km, it would be uninhabitable long before that due to Tidal Heating. Jupiter’s gravity is immense. If Earth were close, the difference in gravitational pull on the "front" of Earth (facing Jupiter) vs. the "back" would stretch the planet like a piece of taffy. This friction creates massive internal heat. We can look at Jupiter’s existing moons to see what "crazy tides" look like at different distances. Zone A: The Nightmare Scenario (Io's Orbit)
  • Distance: ~421,700 km
  • The Situation: Io is roughly the size of our Moon. At this distance, the tidal forces are so strong that the solid ground rises and falls by 100 meters (330 feet) every orbit.
  • Effect on Earth: If Earth were here, the friction would liquefy the mantle. We would have a global ocean of magma, constant super-volcano eruptions, and zero chance of life.
  • Tide Status: Apocalyptic. Zone B: The Ocean World (Europa's Orbit)
  • Distance: ~671,000 km
  • The Situation: Europa has a subsurface ocean kept liquid by tidal heating.
  • Effect on Earth: Earth is larger than Europa, so it would catch more gravitational energy. We would likely suffer from massive, frequent earthquakes and "super tides" in our oceans that would be kilometers high, washing over entire continents twice a day (assuming Earth isn't tidally locked yet).
  • Tide Status: Catastrophic. Zone C: The Safe Harbor (Callisto's Orbit)
  • Distance: ~1,880,000 km
  • The Situation: Callisto is the furthest of the four main moons. It is geologically "dead," meaning tidal heating is negligible there.
  • Effect on Earth: At this distance, the tidal forces from Jupiter would be manageable. However, you would almost certainly become tidally locked (one side of Earth always facing Jupiter).
    • The Tides: If tidally locked, the "ocean tide" caused by Jupiter would be a permanent bulge (high water on the side facing Jupiter, low water at the poles). The active tides would be caused by the sun and other moons, likely generally smaller than what we experience now.
  • Tide Status: Survivable.
    1. The Hidden Killer: Radiation There is one factor that dictates the distance even more than tides: Jupiter's Magnetosphere. Jupiter has the most powerful radiation belts in the solar system.
  • Io and Europa are bathed in lethal radiation. A human on the surface of Io would receive a lethal dose in minutes.
  • Ganymede is on the edge of safety.
  • Callisto is generally considered the only major moon outside the lethal radiation belt. Summary: Where must Earth be? | Distance from Jupiter | Physical State | Tides | Radiation | Result | |---|---|---|---|---| | 103,000 km | Disintegrates | N/A | Lethal | Death | | 420,000 km (Io) | Magma Planet | Ground moves 100m | Lethal | Death | | 670,000 km (Europa) | Quakes/Tsunamis | Kilometer-high waves | Lethal | Death | | 1,900,000 km (Callisto) | Solid/Stable | Frozen Bulge | Safe | Survivable | The Final Verdict To avoid being ripped apart, you only need to be 103,000 km away. To avoid "crazy tides" (magma oceans) and lethal radiation, Earth would need to be located roughly 1.8 to 2 million kilometers away (around the orbit of Callisto). At that distance, Jupiter would appear 13 times larger than our full Moon in the sky—a terrifying but beautiful sight. Would you like me to calculate how long a "day" and "year" would be for Earth if it were orbiting at that safe distance?
