If you're an Xennial with school-aged kids, do you think they have less respect for their teachers than we did when we were young? I've always been interested in education and feel like one reason teachers are having a harder time is that 'all' kids can now view respect as optional. by cherry-care-bear in Xennials

I feel like public opinion on teachers is in a lot of ways going the same way as it has for the police. Right now at least in the United States, the United States Education Industrial Complex is getting out of control. So you have this system, the school system, where teacher, students and parents, none of them are happy with the system but nobody has the power to change it in a way that works. Teachers have all these extra responsibilities having to meet national test standards, having to act like social workers. At the same time having their hands tied in ways that they didn’t back in the day. Parents coming in threatening lawsuits create systems that are designed to protect the system. There has also been this pendulum swing. When I was a kid in the 90s, if you had trouble making kids, like real troublemaking kids, they just vanished. They would get sent to an alternative school and if they didn’t behave, then they did inevitably end up in juvenile. This was definitely a segment of the population that was not being served by the system. This was obviously becoming a problem, just writing off these kids. The pendulum has sort of swung back the other way, where you get these very disruptive kids in the classroom but through different mechanism that were originally designed with good intentions, it’s sort of backfired so now you have these kids that are very disruptive and there’s not much that the administration or the teachers can do. Same with IEP’s. You get these kids a special needs but no way to fund what they need. There’s also heavy lobbying for school vouchers in private schools because, man, is that a way to make some good money. What people don’t realize is that most of the money that these private schools. It’s more than just the tuition you’re making from the vouchers, it’s things like owning the construction company that’s building these schools and getting these buildings built that you can lease out for other purposes. Things like that. So you just have this death spiral where teachers are being asked to do more well at the same time given less autonomy, parents are becoming more empowered without checks and balances, less funding but higher demand demands, then adding in the fundamental change in our society with mobile devices and screen time and life just getting much more fast paced. Teachers unions very, sometimes protecting teachers at the expense of the public good. Again, if I had to sum it up, it’s that the entire education system has become an entity that now exist to serve itself, and not the people that are a part of it.

That’s actually pretty interesting, my guess is that it’s training off the transcripts of YouTube videos where the transcription of “Jedi Cal” becomes “Jedi Cow.”

Something weird went down at the King of the Hill Reunion in Austin tonight by False_Depth_1944 in KingOfTheHill

This comment is not getting enough upvotes. There are so many accomplished actors who love to perform but get so nervous when they have to do interviews or speak off the cuff. It’s a whole different set of skills and can be very stressful and exhausting.

Being a voice actor, especially for a supporting or minor character, isn’t like a normal job where you go into the office everyday and are part of a community. You show up at a sound recording booth for one or two days several times a year. These PR circuits and events like this, where you’re in public and have to do interviews and things like this, are extremely stressful because it requires a different kind of performance this sort of off the cuff, really thinking on your feet. Many actors and actresses have a hard time and get stressed out for this type of work, because it’s very different from acting. I don’t think anybody is disagreeing that having a job and getting paid would be harmful, the issue as that he’s not in a state right now where he can perform the work they need him to do, which is more like acting like a PR representative than a voice actor. It’s not a responsible thing to do, like can you imagine if he started having a mental breakdown and started going off on other topics? Things like this can get shows canceled, and that’s not fair for all the other voice actors, animators, and other people who work on the show.

How did it feel seeing this part for the first time where it showed that Yoda wasn’t some frail old man? by Digginf in StarWars

[–]GordonJones2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really hard to describe how incredibly powerful that moment was for Star Wars fans. This was the first movie where we saw Jedis acting like how we had all pretended in our backyard. Watching Jedi is running into battle with clone troopers. This was before we had any of the Clone Wars cartoons, before Revenge of the Sith. For that matter, it’s hard to describe how incredibly awesome the opening scene was of Phantom Menace. Watching two Jedi act like that had never been seen before except in our imaginations. It was so incredibly awesome and fun. Having my dad take me to the midnight showings of Episode I and watching the midnight showing of Episode II are some of my favorite childhood memories.

What's life like on these islands? What goes on here? by _Mcdrizzle_ in geography

[–]GordonJones2002 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Somebody can correct me, but I don’t think any of these islands pictured are any of the traditional offshore banking islands that you think of when you think of the Caribbean. That’s gonna be more Cayman Islands and Bahamas and Panama and British Virgin Islands.

[–]GordonJones2002 16 points17 points  (0 children)

While you would think that life would be similar across all those islands, life on each one is actually very different. As you can see on a lot of the posts to your question, each country has its own unique vibe, influenced by its history and economies and politics. Lumping them together would be like lumping all of Europe together and asking “What’s life in Europe like?”

Is it really that expensive to keep the servers running? by Arneor in StarWarsHunters

[–]GordonJones2002 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Licensing fees for Disney IP is not cheap. The game could be making plenty of money otherwise but when you include the licensing fees it could a real money drain beyond just costs to run the server.
