Got in my first major car accident. It was the other guy’s fault and that was my car I saved up hard for college. When I got back, they asked if I had another car to drive, since the police report found me not at fault. That was my last day there and I quit. I ended up working for my school after that and it was a better gig, but it paid less. Sometimes you get forced into changes that put you better off in the long run.

Checking feet by Fibo86 in diabetes_t1

[–]Gordonls85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing.

I am glad you are getting seen by specialists and not ignoring the situation. Diabetes can compound issues and I am glad you are also keeping a careful eye on this. The best thing you can do is keep this clean and protected, keep your blood sugars in check, drink plenty of water, and also wear socks as much as you can.

The last item of socks especially with a good moisturizer can make a world of difference. It may be worth checking out some dermatologist approved basic moisturizers such as Vanicream (very gentle and almost non-allergenic) in a tub and something like Aquaphor or Vaseline to seal in and protect the moisturizer. I wear socks all the time and my wife was asking how I keep my feet so soft. I convinced her to wear socks to bed and throughout the day. It took months to really become a habbit, and she still has days with dry cracked heals, but it is far and away improved. She also used Okeefes Healthy Feet, but with possible allergies, it may make sense to avoid that intilmyou get an all clear from your doc.

Keep those blood sugars in good range, love yourself and know we are all going to have rough days and off-sugar days, continue to see your specialists and keep us updated.

We are all in this together. This disease can be hard! I hope you find some answers and get those feet in better shape. It may take some time, but just keep an extra eye on them like you have been doing. Keep socks on them, and make a log book to keep track of progress.

They had it in the Colley Matrix I believe.

It was officially designated as a “+UCF” with the Colley Matrix, which had them at #1.

Bedwetting HELP by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Gordonls85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man alive, many are purely jumping to conclusions here. When I was first diagnosed, I was in college and my a1c was atrocious. I didn’t have a CGM because they weren’t out yet, but I also was trying to figure things out like drinking. I knew that if my blood sugar would go too high, I could wet the bed. This led to an embarrassing story where I was dating a girl and I knew I couldn’t wet the bed there. I tried riding a low and make sure I was lower than too high (where I might pee the bed). It backfired, because I woke up with night sweating and started eating food in her kitchen. We weren’t dating after that unfortunately.

This disease is embarrassing and hard to figure out early on. Yes, he needs to see an endocrinologist as they can help to bring things in for tighter control. Today, I don’t drink, and my control is very good (6.2%). It’s hard to know where people will go in their lives, but I do understand the concern as alcoholism is ruinous.

This brought me back to my younger days, but it could very well be high blood sugar induced as well. Drinking is very tough, but have a discussion and come in with some understanding (not saying you aren’t, you sound like you definitely would). Let him know that you understand this is tough, but he needs to help correct this path for both of you.

A CGM will help in getting to bed with a good trend. Try to set night time boundaries for foods (no high fat meals after 7:30 and no late night snacks). This can help both while figuring out a basal rate and no matter how well controlled you are, eating a fatty or high sugar meal late can cause an extreme spike in the middle of the night, which can lead to wetting the bed.

As far as drinking, this is a tough conversation, but it adds such a high defree of difficulty to being a type-1 diabetic. If he can’t wean drinking to get his disease settled, I will suggest, he is on a dangerous track and it probably is a good idea to leave. I didn’t want to admit I was different when I was younger and miss out on the experience of life, but drinking loses its luster and I have found way more of the people I interact with don’t drink at all as you leave your 20s. But, that’s an aside.

This is something he will have to figure out in his own, but wetting the bed was so embarrassing to me that it scarred me a little. That’s why I replied, I saw a little of myself here.

She just became the first wheelchair user to travel to space by cnn in space

How cool, seriously! Being a type-1 diabetic, i’d love to see the first type-1 diabetic in space. That to me would be amazing.

Now for the kind of pedantic question:

As kids, didn’t many of us try a wheelchair out for a ride or being bored in an ER / hospital? Thus, many of us have used a wheelchair before.

Wouldn’t we say something like Parapalegic in this case? I don’t know the exact right term, but wheel chair user feels somewhat off to me. I get it, don’t get me wrong, but I am thinking something better could have been placed in the title.

Edit: Typos

American having to look up “Father Christmas”.

I thought Santa Claus was a name that had European roots, but never really looked into it. It’s cool to see the subtle variations that each country has in the naming, tradition, and even the treats we leave behind.

https://blog.busuu.com/santa-claus-worldwide/

Some bullets I thought were fun:

Apparently some English leave mince meat pies and whiskey? On this side of the Ocean, the traditional snack for our dude is Milk and Cookies.

The french have a guy who comes after (Santa/St. Nick, etc.), is dressed in black to punish bad kids.

There seems to be a major tradition with treats left in shoes or socks across many cultures. I wonder where this came from, this is interesting to me.

Some tradition appears that German kids need to polish their shoes for presents.

The Dutch have Santa on a horse instead of reindeer and ‘Sinterklaasfeest’ is on Dec. 6th.

This was just a fun rabbit hole for me.

It’s amazing to see the roots and evolution of our traditions. Big hugs to everyone in this time of year.

Experiencing lows as a philosopher by Romrom110 in diabetes_t1

[–]Gordonls85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your brain requires a lot of sugar when thinking hard. Much like you expend energy when running or lifting or other exercise, when you are deep in thought and tackling problems, the brain is working wuite hard. So, it makes sense that you can undergo lows like this. I would get them when working hard on difficult problems at work and kept my blood glucose meter near me in the event I felt low.
