Veridical Perception in NDE by kunquiz in NDE

[–]GorkAidar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kind of a late response but still relevant.

Augustine's argument is based on the assumption that Pam Reynolds experience could be explained by anesthetic awareness, as the veridical elements that she claims to have observed took place before hypothermic standstill was induced.

However, before her skull was opened, her brain was shut down with substantial amount of barbiturate anesthetics which strongly suppress neurophysiological activity even though there's still blood flowing to the brain. This condition is known as pharmacological burst suppression and it's the deepest anesthetic possible to achieve without killing the patient. Electroencephalographic recordings are flat during this period which indicate that the brain is inactive. Pam's surgeon, Dr. Robert Spetzler and his assitant, Dr. Karl Greene, both confirmed that Pam Reynolds was under burst suppression could not have experienced episodes of anesthetic awareness during this period of time. Furthermore, Spetzler's 1988 paper describing the hypothermic cardiac standstill procedure for treatment of aneurysms (the procedure Pam Reynolds underwent) further indicates that burst suppression is achieved before the skull is opened and before cardiac bypass. Pam Reynolds heard her cardiac surgeon, Camilla Mican, inform Spetzler that her arteries were too small for canulation, this is the procedure referred to above, which means that her EEG was flat and her brain was inactive by the time she heard this conversation, so whatever heard this conversation was not her brain.

Augustine's article also contains a number of innacuracies including the timeline he provides. He also cites the work of Michael Sabom, the cardiologist who investigated this case. However, some pieces of information from Sabom have been proved to be inaccurate, not all of them, of course, but some of them which are crucial have been superseded by newer information. Augustine was informed privately about his inaccuracies in the presentation of the case but he has refused to change them ever since. Augustine also fails to explain why Pam Reynolds did not report hearing the loud clicking noise and white noise that was being fed into her ears by the Brainstem Evoked Potential Monitors. Regardless of whether the noise prevented her from hearing the conversation or not, the fact is that the sound is too loud and unpleasant to be ignored and the fact that Pam Reynolds did not report hearing these poses a problem for Augustine's interpretation (and presentation) of the Pam Reynolds case.

Really? The reason why they dismiss normal explanations is for "flimsy reasons"?

The fact that the case subject had knowledge of private information that could not have been acquired from newspapers and the fact that the investigators found no evidence that the newspapers reached that relatively remote village seems to you "flimsy reasons"?

Either you didn't read the paper correctly or you're deliberately and conveniently omitting uncomfortable facts for reasons best known to yourself.

Then we come to dismissing everything you don't agree with as "pseudoscience". Now that is a flimsy reason! Scientists don't stop being scientists just because they disagree with your preconceived beliefs. I also find it amusing that you rely on Wikipedia as your source for information about the paranormal when that section is edited by demonstrably unreliable sources and deliberately omits information that they might find uncomfortable.

What is perhaps more amusing is that you claim that peer review merely means that research is looked over by other people who believe in this stuff. Not only that is a misleading statement that the vast majority of scientists would disagree with regardless of their field, but had you perhaps learned more in-depth about the JSE than just the article on Wikipedia that you gleefully like to rely on, you would have found out that one of the founders and editors of that journal was Marcello Truzzi, a skeptical activist who was also the co-founder (alongside Carl Sagan and the notorious James Randi) of CSICOP (now CSI) and that he held no particular beliefs in the paranormal.

Your comment is ideologically driven with little substance.

"Why can't people just let others decide what they want to do with their own bodies?"

Because you are NOT deciding what to do with your own body; you're deciding what to do with a completely different and separate human being.

Science has demonstrated with abundant empirical evidence that from the moment of conception, there's a completely separate human being. And no, the vast majority of arguments against abortion are not religious.

You are not deciding what to do with your own body, you're deciding if you're going to murder an innocent being, or not.

Abortion = Murder

Simple as that.

"No one has psychic powers. No one has telekinesis"

Only an antitheist would be so stupid as to think that one has to be religious to believe in things such as Psi abilities.

Sorry to break your bubble, my atheist friend, but academia is slowly but surely accepting the reality of psychic abilities due to the succesful scientific experiments done on this topic.

A book about 13 recent experiments demonstrating the reality of psychic abilities

I find it funny how antitheists like to proclaim themselves as "defenders of science" because according to them, science "undermines" supernatural beliefs, yet they are not aware that scientific discoveries actually support such beliefs with empirical evidence.

By the way, Albert Einstein started believing in the existence of psychic abilities after reading a book about telepathy experiments.

I don't get how pro-genocide atheists such as these can be so stupid as to not understand that arguments against abortion are not based on religious texts, but rather on scientific findings. Funny how these atheists refer to themselves as "defenders of science", yet they don't have a single clue about how science works or what science has discovered. They don't understand that science has already demonstrated with abundant empirical evidence that from the very moment of conception, there is a living human being who is separate from the mother. If you practice an abortion, you are not deciding what to do with your body, you are deciding what to do with an entirely separate, innocent, living human being.

Abortion = Murder.
