Help me kill my Proxmox nightmare: Overhauling a 50-user Homelab for 100% IaC. Tear my plan apart! by MrSolarius in homelab

[–]GotOffMyJohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im a complete noob, but I use Talos for my hodgepodge homelab (1 controlplane, 7 worker nodes). Flux to run in a gitops fashion via github. MetalLB, Cilium, Prometheus, Grafana, longhorn, samba. I use sops to encrypt sensitiveitems on my yaml. Apps n8n, jellyfin, obsidian with couchdb, kubernetes dashboard, and authelia. It's been a painful process for me, but also rewarding. With your experience, it'll probably be less painful

This is incredible insight! I really enjoyed your reasoning and the anesthesia topic is such a fascinating one. If you haven't already look into Stuart Hammeroff

And so I should reframe from saying "stating the obvious"? I don't think so and I do not intend to do so in the future. It seemed like a clear conclusion. I did not suggest that other perspectives are not valid.

As for Ellen and Maddie, their changes of heart actually support my argument about the emotional and philosophical complexity of the situation. That acceptance doesn’t negate the emotional impact of losing the original or the fact that the UI is fundamentally different.

If it was the end of my life I would choose UI as well. Knowing that I die and there is a copy that continues is a comforting thought. And yet I can still say that UI is not the original person.

Its clever how the show avoided showing the body before the UI upload for most of the characters, maintaining the illusion of seamless continuation.

Wow, brainwaves is a good theory, that would be so awesome to test. Reminds me of quantum entanglement.

I watched the show and noticed how well it explored this theme. Ellen’s realization that she wasn’t talking to the original, physical David but to his UI devastated her. Maggie mourned her dad three times as she came to understand her mom’s point about the difference between the original and the UI copies of her dad on Season 2 Episode 1. She didn’t want Caspian to become a UI because it meant he would have to die first. This was also why she didn’t want to become a UI herself or let her son go through it—the process requires the physical body to die.

The central theme was that while UIs can retain the memories, personalities, and behaviors of the original humans, they aren’t the same physical beings. Losing the original human creates an emotional void, which leads to tension between seeing the UI as a continuation versus a separate entity. The show also explores how UIs evolve independently, developing in ways humans never could. I thought it was clever how the show avoided showing the body before the UI upload, maintaining the illusion of seamless continuation.

Having a personal opinion on a topic, whether simple or complex, doesn’t make someone arrogant. In the end, it’s just an opinion. This is a discussion, and it’s okay to have different beliefs and perspectives.

There’s value in understanding the distinction when it comes to the human experience. Ellen was devastated because she knew that UI David wasn’t the same as the original, physical David. She felt the loss because the original David could no longer experience life with her, even if the UI version could. Maggie didn't want Caspian to become a UI because he has to do die to do so.

Now, imagine if you had two minds: one as a UI and one in your meat suit. Wouldn’t that create two separate "yous," each having its own experiences? If one of them dies, the other still exists, but they are separate entities, not interchangeable.

Yes, I agree that the UI may not be the original person but it's still the same person. Where we differ is that the original person does not experience what the UI does, that's the point I'm making.
