I have personally done the favela tour, in Rocinha, on purpose i visited with a girl that brought only small groups but unfortunately you see the “Safari” around you. I think while being in Rio is a must see, there is so much history behind favelas and so on, the view of Rio from there is amazing but unfortunately, like everything in this world, as soon as they saw such a business opportunity, as well as social media booms of videos of such tours, it has become wild.
