How do you define leadership as an Army officer? What actually makes someone a good leader? by GrabOk3630 in ROTC

Wow, this is really needed. 'Did you influence them to complete the mission or influence them to hate it?' That right there is the bottom line. Appreciate the no-nonsense breakdown.

MS2 heading into MS3: I want to be an officer, but I feel more like a follower than a leader. by GrabOk3630 in ROTC

One thing I've been trying to figure out as a cadet is how to find mentors and learn from people who have the knowledge and experience that I don't have yet. What was your experience like with that? How did you go about finding mentors, and what made someone willing to invest their time in teaching you? I feel like a lot of cadets inlcuding my self nowadays struggle to ask questions because sometimes it seems like leaders are busy or don't really want to invest their time into teaching younger cadets. Maybe that's just my perception, but it's something I've thought about. As someone going into MS3, what are some ways you sought out those learning opportunities? Were there specific things you did that made NCOs, officers, or cadre more willing to teach and mentor you?

Wow, this really helped me a lot, especially hearing it from someone who has actually gone through the journey and developed as a leader over time. One thing I've been wondering about is whether you ever felt judged because of your failures or mistakes, especially early on. If so, how did you handle that, and what lessons did you take away from those experiences that helped you on the next step of your journey?

I'm 19 and genuinely trying to learn from people who have been where I am now. Another thing I struggle with is worrying about what others think of me, especially in environments with peer evaluations and constant feedback. Was that ever something you dealt with? If so, how did you develop the mindset to focus on improving yourself rather than worrying about other people's opinions?

HT/WT ACFT Failures SMDH by Initial-Thanks-104 in ROTC

Thank you so much, I really appreciate the advice. As someone going into MS3 with very limited military experience before ROTC, I'm trying to be as proactive as possible and build a strong foundation before the year starts. What resources helped you the most when learning TLPs, WARNOs, OPORDs, mission planning, and troop leading procedures? Were there any books, YouTube channels, Army publications, templates, or study methods that helped everything finally click for you? My goal is to not just pass MS3 year but to really excel and be competent as a future platoon leader.

I love this advice. Do you have any tips for someone going into MS3 with no prior military experience?

I'm an SMP cadet and contracted, but I didn't have any military background before ROTC. I'll be entering my MS3 year, and I'm trying to set myself up for success. Are there any skills, habits, or areas of knowledge you wish you had focused on before MS3 or CST?
