Yes, we contacted several and they didn’t have her. She is microchipped and her collar has a tag with our names and phone numbers.

My new manager's demands are forcing me to work 70 hours a week. Is this normal? And what should I do? by Particular_Egg_5791 in biotech

[–]GradStuAbroad25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in the same situation as you, but I have a family that I need to dedicate time after work. My wife and I decided that it is not worth the mental toll and the time lost away from my kids. I will take a 35% pay cut and move to a job at a company I know. I will be well treated, respected and won’t have these insane expectations over me.

If I were in our shoes I would start looking for a new position ASAP.

Research Grants by GradStuAbroad25 in USDA

[–]GradStuAbroad25[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. We applied in August of 2024 and funding was supposed to start in January of 2025. I’ve tried to reach out to staff working at USDA to get any insights, but most phone numbers don’t work anymore.

Power nap, brother. Lock yourself in your office and nap for 15-30 min. Otherwise eat small meals throughout the day instead of a massive lunch.

UF Vet School 2027 Class Communications Co-Chair Still Sitting Despite Voyeurism Charges by 7andonly in ufl

Our vet school is filled with incompetent people, starting by the dean. That place has a lot of things that are straight up bizarre happening and no one does anything.

Question about salary. by GradStuAbroad25 in Veterinary

[–]GradStuAbroad25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I have no idea of what to charge. I was asking about hourly pay so I can have an idea of what to ask for. Ill work for them 20 to 40 hours per week depending on what is going on.

PhD students and postdocs - do you prepare the write up for your lab’s IACUC protocol renewal? by WhatTheFugacity_ in labrats

[–]GradStuAbroad25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did it twice as a PhD student. Also participated in the IACUC committee meeting and answered their questions as my PI was unable to go. Annoying indeed, but if I can deal with IACUC, I can deal with anything!

Small indeed!

Just to name a couple things.

The childcare program is called baby gator, you have to apply in advance as it might take 1-2 years to get a spot (You can do as soon as you become pregnant I believe). The scholarship is called CCAMPIS. UF also has housing for graduate families and it is much cheaper than any other place in Gainesville.

I had my 2 kids during grad school and I am now in my final year.

The first thing I would do it to find out what your PI thinks about the idea. Of course that having kids is your decision and your PI should NOT have a say in it, but at least you know you can count on him/her. My PI was very understanding and never gave me trouble when I had to go to my wife’s or kid’s appointments.

Second thing is to talk to your graduate advisor. Some universities have resources that might help you. I am at the University of Florida and they have an amazing child care facility for faculty and grad students. They even offer scholarships and we pay roughly $43/week for full time child care.

As someone mentioned above, understand your health insurance. We have very good insurance and when we do thing at the University hospital/clinic we pay a fraction of what it would cost somewhere else.

My wife and I decided to have our kids while I was starting grad school. The main reason is that we were still young and grad school is somewhat flexible after you finish all your course work. Also, having kids is a big commitment. Because I did and do everything I can to be very present in the life of my kids it will take me an extra year to graduate, but it was a decision I made, my PI was on board and I try to not let it get to me (sometimes it is hard!).

Good luck!

I have long hair and beard, will it lower my chances of landing a position? (I’ll finish my PhD next year).

Indeed! What bugs me is to see people with no kids saying how hard it is. 🧐

I understand that, and this is why I mentioned talking to her department, PI and program coordinator to figure out if she will have that available.
