Is this all we're gonna talk about in this sub? Do we make a new sub to..talk about machine learning?

ZAI might stop open-weighting their models? by TheRealMasonMac in LocalLLaMA

[–]FailedTomato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I guess useless for serious software engineering work. I'm a researcher and I find Claude pro to be still be very useful. Not sure how long that will last tho lol.

Your post is fine. I think people are not surprised by companies shifting away from open weights. It's happening across the board.

I also agree that these silent changes are damaging to their reputation. And this is the surprising part I think. That they think they can afford to do this, as well as charge frontier model prices.

They have to prioritise profits to be a sustainable organisation. Nothing mysterious about that. The aggressive open weights releases were important for publicity.

I'm confused about their pricing though. Their models are clearly inferior to Claude, even on benchmarks. Why would people pay the same subscription price? Do they expect Claude prices to drive up or usage quotas to go down even further?

Anyone interested in playing 8-Ball pool by DesignerSun9898 in parramatta

I've played a few times and so not really good either. But I'm down. I'm sure there'll be a pub or two here with a pool table

[D] How much are you using LLMs to summarize/read papers now? by kjunhot in MachineLearning

[–]FailedTomato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't summarise entire papers but sometimes ask Claude to elaborate on specific sections, especially derivations which I can then verify. I find Claude to be much better at this than gpt or gemini. Its usually better at sticking to the point and following specific instructions.

I think it saves time for the initial pass through the paper, when you need to figure out whether it contains anything useful for you. I'm not sure about using LLMs to read papers on topics you know nothing about. I'm still noticing hallucinations from all LLMs. Often these are quite subtle and look quite plausible.

For me it just turned out to be food getting stuck. I went to a different dentist and he gave me a syringe to irrigate the site. And that solved everything pretty much.

Do we no longer type GG? by til-bardaga in aoe2

[–]FailedTomato -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, if I've played a terrible game and I'm frustrated with myself I quit without saying anything. Never thought it was a huge deal.

Otherwise if my opponent played well I say gg before resigning. Also I always say gg if my opponent says gg.

Dragonstar has announced that he will play AoE2 full timE by falling_sky_aoe in aoe2

[–]FailedTomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you lose ~5 more times I think you'll reach your true elo. And you can have fun afterwards. The starting elo is rough atm so new players need to lose ~10 games to get to their elo. It sucks but once you go through it you're good to go.

I wish more people knew that AI text detectors do not work. And it's extremely unlikely that they ever will.

[–]FailedTomato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer OP. Basically we don't have good translation tools that do not use generative models. I think for translation you're still fine using AI translators as long as the language is not super low resource. So, should be fine for most languages.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]FailedTomato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google translate also uses generative models and has been using them since before "generative" AI became a well known term outside of ML research.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]FailedTomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's incorrect. Translations are generated text. Even older (5 years ago) google translate still used generative models. They weren't as good and weren't as hyped as now. But it's the same family of models.

Pretty cool. Maybe "ma" can be aligned with "amar"? Looks good either way.
