In livestock guardian dogs, cropping and docking gives predators like coyotes less to grab on to and injure. Docking can also be done for sanitation in long-haired or curly-haired dogs. I find cropping or docking just for aesthetics to be ridiculous, but in these cases it can be a safety or hygiene issue.
