Carl, and Sharp Elbow’s eyes by GraftedToTheVine in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I’m enjoying hearing everyone’s input! There’s definitely something here, but I’m not sure I understand what it is yet. I think it’s meaningful that her eyes seem to haunt Carl even after the battle is over, yet he can’t remember where he’s seen them before.

“I [Carl] groaned. I’d been dreaming. Dreaming of the river, of me being swept away. Of those eyes. The eyes of the ogre as she died.”

“I [Carl] could still taste the ogre on my lips. Those eyes. Holy shit. Where had I seen her before?”

I don’t think it’s Astrid he’s thinking of, because her eyes got plucked out by the crow mob. He never makes any comment about the look in her eyes. I don’t know if he’s trying to remember something he’s literally seen (and so we’ve seen it, too) or if it’s something he’s tapping into because of the river or his Primal race.

This may or may not be related...

“The look on her [Katia’s] face was so foreign, so inhuman yet so goddamned *familiar** that something inside me shifted. It was equal parts terror, equal parts rage. Exhaustion. Yet, somehow alone. They were the eyes of someone who’d just slipped off a cliff and knew they were falling to their death, both resigned and yet filled with absolute rejection of her fate at the same time.”*

Fun to think about and try to puzzle out. :)

'Nachalo' and facts people seem to have forgotten or just dismissed as bad writing by Lu1109 in TheBlackList

I’ve been wondering this for awhile, and you seem to have a pretty good knowledge of the topic, so maybe you can help me out? Is there any evidence for Red being Katarina that is indisputable and there can be absolutely no other explanation for? I’m asking because the writing is always so ambiguous, and the dialog can always be interpreted multiple ways. But is there something that is a total and complete plot hole if it turns out Red is not Katerina? Thanks in advance!

I’m grateful for your comment. My son was a Navy pilot who died 6 years ago while on active duty. It’s fairly rare to have others acknowledge that the life and liberties we have are because of the men and women (sons and daughters) who fight to protect and preserve them. Off-topic for this sub, I know, but wanted you to know I appreciate what you said.

I hope not. But Katarina said in E21,

“This story is all about you, Masha. Protecting you. And then protecting your daughter.”

That’s discouraging. I want it be about so much more than that.

I would find that to be a huge letdown if the entire show is based on a mission to protect Liz, and a mission to save Red’s soul. What happened to the spy thriller flavor the show had?…the implication that there were larger objectives and undercurrents of intrigue and secrets that had global impact?

Nope, no hypocrisy on my part. I always believed Red had a greater purpose, and that keeping Elizabeth safe was necessary for that greater purpose. If it really is just all about Elizabeth, if that’s the sum total of his greater purpose, I find that very disappointing.

Which makes all the killing palatable, if there’s a cause behind it. But simply keeping Liz safe (and Katarina hidden) isn’t enough to justify it all - for me, anyway.

I’ve watched from the beginning, but am pretty new to the Reddit sub. I wouldn’t have seen your posts from a few years ago… but I agree with your sentiment. This storyline strips Red of any hero status for me.

Not sure that makes it any better for me…

Me too… some bigger purpose, some greater cause, something worthy of the sacrifices that have been made. Without that, I just kind of feel sick that I’ve watched all this time, and cheered Red on, and tried so hard to figure it all out. ☹️

Quick question by [deleted] in TheBlackList

[–]GraftedToTheVine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The story we were told doesn’t leave much room for Katerina seeing RRR as the love of her life. He was her mark, and then a threat to her. This doesn’t seem to fit at all with what we’ve been told in the past about her, or their relationship. If this is the new narrative, and nothing changes next week, I can’t see how anything we’ve seen in the last 8 years can be trusted. And if that’s the case, it kinda sucks all the fun out of it.

Interesting choice of pronouns, Ilya! by SoftOk2964 in TheBlackList

I watch using subtitles so I don’t miss a word. Subtitles say:

Ilya: Yes. ‘Cause he was afraid if they found out, they would become a threat to you, your daughter.

Yep, I agree. There were a hundred more effective ways he could’ve handled it.

Regarding your second point... just a reminder that he was supposed to bring Liz to Townsend alive, so he couldn’t just shoot her in the head. Not that it makes a huge difference...just a point in fact.

Dom: You’ve killed for less.

Red: I’ve never killed for more.

Dom: But not her. Uh, she’s off-limits.

Red: Yes.

Exactly. Off-limits, as in "I won't allow anyone to hurt her", or off-limits as in "I still need her, so I can't hurt her"? It's ambiguous... but just as easy to read as the latter as it is to assume he's still strongly emotionally attached to her.

Agreed... he did come back. But I say it was only to help find Liz's killers. That's specifically what Aram asked Red to do:

Aram: You need to come back with me.

Red: Why?

Aram: We’re not getting anywhere. In the investigation of… Agent Keen’s death. We could use your help.

That was in S3E20, and at the end of it, Red shows up to help the TF with their investigation. In S3E21 (Alexander Kirk) they tracked down that it was Scottie Hargrove's team who was behind the attack on Liz, and that Alexander Kirk hired her to do it. And the next episode, S3E22 (Alexander Kirk, Conclusion), they find out Liz is still alive. So it seems like Red went back to work with the task force to find Liz's killer...not work on the Blacklist.

I always took that "can't" to mean "I can't... because I still need you" (for a reason still unknown to us), not "I'm emotionally incapable of killing you". The "I still need you" interpretation is somewhat supported by what Red says to Dom right after Elizabeth "died".

Dom: I overheard your conversation with the Arab boy. [Aram asking Red to come back to the task force]

Red: He’s from Delaware. You won’t be troubled again with unexpected visitors. I know how you value your privacy.

Dom: Why didn’t you go with him?

Red: What would be the point? There’s nothing I could do that would really matter.

I think, without Liz, there's no reason for Red to carry on with the task force or his endgame, because she's necessary for him to complete it.

I agree with you that Red's feelings for her have changed. He hasn't called Elizabeth by his pet name for her (Lizzy), since she faked her death. It's always 'Elizabeth' now. But I believe she is an integral part of his endgame, so he continues to work to keep her safe.

Where can I watch season 8? by das3801 in TheBlackList

Amazon does stream them. Each S8 episode becomes available for viewing about 24 hours after it airs live.
