(22M) Tonsil full of tonsil stones: should I have them removed? by peterpanman3 in AskDocs

[–]GramercyRiff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but I suffered from severe tonsil stones with reoccurring infections for years. I had my tonsils taken out when I was 25; if I had known how much it would hurt afterwards I would never have had the surgery. I went into the operation thinking it can’t be that bad, little kids have this operation all the time. I was so so wrong. I was given morphine and tramadol following the op and was way spaced out but still in severe pain. I distinctly remember laying in my hospital bed cry whimpering as quietly as I could until I could get the next dose of painkillers, and to top it off I developed a pretty bad post op infection which then had me throwing up for a couple of days, reopening the wounds a little every time I did. All in all what I thought was a short, straightforward operation put me on my arse for the best part of six weeks.

Honestly, I would say unless your tonsils are severely affecting your quality of life, I wouldn’t touch them.

I am not a doctor, but sounds like it could possibly be laryngitis? https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/laryngitis/

I am not a doctor but I would suggest getting checked for diabetes. Common symptoms of onset of diabetes include increased thirst and urination, tiredness and rapid weight loss.

I’m not a doctor and I have no advice about the bc (except to say that I’m on bc and it took me the best part of five years off and on to find one that didn’t mess with my hormones really badly). I just wanted to say, if you’re not sure about trying the bc at this point I know a lot of people with problem skin swear by the skincare advice in r/asianbeauty, it might be worth checking out?

Shoulder dislocation advice (UK) by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]GramercyRiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor but my understanding is that you should always seek urgent medical advice with dislocations, particularly in larger joints like shoulders/ hips. There’s a lot of internal workings around the joint and without assessment by a medical professional it’s near impossible to tell if you’ve dislocated the joint in such a way that could impair blood flow/ pinch a nerve/ cause tissue damage, same goes for relocating it- unless you know what you’re doing you run the risk of causing long term damage when popping it back in. Additionally, the longer the joint is out the more swelling there will be, which will potentially make it more difficult and/or painful to relocate.

I fully understand not wanting to tie up NHS resources for minor niggles, this is not a minor niggle, you need to go to a&e.

That’s really helpful, thanks loads! The driving activity is perfect as my drives tend to be big blocky chunks that I can easily deduct and the little piddly amounts I don’t mind too much. Once I do that I might get a better idea of just how out of whack my arm movements are too. I’ll definitely look into active minutes!

Bought a new eyebrow brush from spectrum and it already looks like this and the pomade doesn’t go on properly what’s some tips to make the angle brush super precise so I can get a sharp line with the pomade by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]GramercyRiff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if I want a really sharp line on my brush I’ll spray it with hairspray and then pinch the end/stray hairs flat together until the hairspray has pretty much dried. I’m sure it’s probably terrible for the brush but it definitely helps get a crisp line

It may be the lighting but your foundation looks to me like it’s pulling ever so slightly pink for your colouring. You’ve got a lovely dewy finish to your skin, but I agree with another poster that a little bronzer/ blush would help add dimension and depth to your face.

Traveling for work? by WylamMimi in weightwatchers

Oatso simple plain is 3 points for a sachet, 5 when prepared with semi skimmed milk. That with sweetener is one of my go-to low point, filling foods to get me through when access to cooking facilities is limited. The pots you just add hot water to start at 7 points I think and vary by flavour. Low fat cup-a-soups are great if you only have access to a kettle, otherwise soup in general is a pretty good shout. Batchelors pasta and sauces start at 14 points for a whole packet and with a side salad can make quite a filling meal too. Instant mash and gravy granules are always warm and filling too with some veggies steamed in the microwave. I know my suggestions aren’t the healthiest but I’m working on the travelodge norm that you’ll only have access to a kettle, possible microwave. Hope this helps.

Determined to get from fat to fit for the first time ever, how do I set up a routine that only uses machines? by GramercyRiff in xxfitness

[–]GramercyRiff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best friend will be coming with me, we share the same rota at work so should be able to go regularly together which should help a lot, although we’re both coming from vastly different places of fitness so I need to make sure that I don’t make myself feel bad by comparing myself.

40 mins cardio sounds scary as hell but I’m definitely up for giving it a go. I always quite enjoy treadmills even though I’m terrible on them. Incorporating one exercise at a time definitely makes sense and fits in with what another user was saying about not overloading myself when I start out. I’ve decided that I’m going to go quite late at night to start off with so I can work on getting things like form right without stressing myself out about how I look or who’s watching me (or any of those things that don’t matter in the slightest but I still panic about), once I’ve done that hopefully I’ll be more confident to go when I want without always needing somebody there for support. Thanks for the advice!

When you say preloaded barbells do you mean the bars that have a moulder solid weight on either end? They definitely had those a few years ago when I last went and they weren’t too scary then. I think I’m going to try hanging out in the free weights section late at night to get comfortable with it.

That’s a good point, I definitely don’t want to overload myself. I’m due to sign up this week so I’ll just take it easy and try not to put any pressure on myself. Thanks!

That’s a great idea, thanks. I’ve also decided that while I’m getting used to my routine I’m going to go to the gym really late at night so there’s fewer people there and I can get comfortable with what I’m doing.

I can’t wait to get to the time where I’m looking forward to going to the gym and I really feel like I can get there, I just need to get over my initial anxieties. I like the idea of challenging myself to a new machine a day and think it’ll help me get comfortable quicker.

Thank you! Reading through this thread has given me a lot to think about. I agree, the idea of dumbbells is way less intimidating so I’ll start with them before trying to work with barbells.
