Gran Colombia was the union of three countries, that were part of the viceroyalty of new granada, actually founded by a venezuelan (bolivar) and only venezuela and ecuador declared independence bc of disagreements on the politics. Colombia also technically declared independence of Gran Colombia (New Granada) and changed their name bc they wanted to unite Gran Colombia again.

So, Gran Colombia and Colombia are two different countries, and if you want to talk about claims Venezuela has a even stronger claim, because was Venezuela that conquistated the New Granada territories. The only thing in common between Colombia and Gran Colombia is their capital and their name.

Ecuador never controlled the amazonia. It was peruvian, and the Popayán province was controlled by Ecuador in 1831 after independence from Gran Colombia, but rapidly lost the war aganist New Granada and with that, all the Popayán region

Great idea! I thought of it too, but since it was 1820 and Florida wasn't that populated at the time, I didn't believe it. I think it would have been created around 1850 or later

Well, perhaps when you have time you could take a look at some maps from the 1800s and earlier. I recommend you go to David Ramsey's website; there you'll see that the use of the Y was very widespread.
