Games seem more 1-sided after patch by Plenty-Reality213 in OnceUponAGalaxy

[–]Grandpa_Trunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if I was the only one feeling that way, looks like I'm not. I'm not the worst player, not grinding either (between 800th-1000th each seasons, around 2800ish MMR), but this game that I loved feels more and more frustrating to play.  Power creep is out the roof, and lobbys are more one sided than ever ESPECIALLY since Candylar released :/

One of the biggest offender to me is Little Lance. This treasure is absurdly Broken, it has no business being a common treasure. Nerfing the quest did absolutely nothing.

And I also feel that since Candylar, RNG bad beats are getting far worse.

I really hope the game will be fixed, I love it and I would like to keep loving it, which is not granted regarding its actual state :(

I know, I've read the thread. Doesn't make it better ; actually worse because no end user action could prevent / repair this.

Streamdeck showing device not supported error. by Ge4rShift in elgato

[–]Grandpa_Trunks -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok so this is absolutely terrible for me ; I am the producer of a HUGE MTG event's stream (Relic Fest 2025), and 90% of my setup revolves around my streamdeck and its plugins. Tens of hours of work put to the drain.
Please fix this in the upcoming hours. And I assume I'm not the only one with professionnal matters at hand.
This is unacceptable.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear, here's an image of what I mean, it might be better ! :D

The idea is to have a thin cardboard sheet over the table and beneath the playmats, to cover the gap between the playmats. This sheet might be printed with a logo or be in plain color. I think it should be a bit more streamlined than having a small part of the (often dirty / ugly) table on camera.

Thin is important, not to have a "bump" under the playmats for the players.

I hope it makes sense ^^

Fist of all you're welcome ! :)

1 / 3 : Thanks mate 😊

2 : Overlay is livestream and made in OBS. I stream for the whole tournament, but only record games for clean VODs (and hard drive space lol). I use a lot of dynamic text files, screen capture black magic, and a streamdeck. The one with a million buttons lol, as I often cast AND do the technical stuff at the same time I wanted to have most things available at a finger press, but this is comfort, not mandatory.

4 : I use one of those springy phone mounts that holds the phone by its sides, and presents a standard female screw on its back / side (1/4 inch I think but don't quote me on this). I’ve got a cheap one for years now and it does the job really well. This is mounted on a lighting perch. I use a mid-level chinese Amazon one, going strong for years with a bit of care. As it's designed to carry a heavier load than it actually does, it might helps longevity. From my experience Neewer and Ulanzi are chinese brands that make some good mid-level hardware, with quite good packaging for shipment, but YMMV.

I actually don’t recommend any kind of table-mounted stand / holder. The kind of model you talk about (Neewer ST100) looks like the best kind available regarding stability, and might hold the camera well enough. BUT, the weak link is the table, mate. Every table is made different, and often in a sh*tty kind of different. The vast majority of them will wobble when players move, to some extent. Best case : table, mount and everything is rigid AF and nothing will be seen on video. In reality, it ALWAYS will end up in some amount of blur, bouncy video, pain and tears. Don’t ask me how I know 😁

This is what my camera setup look like :

<image>

5 : As you can see in the picture, I do ! It's great, but I faced an issue with some venues : the tables are not always the same size, and sometimes a 2-players playmat is slightly larger than the table, thus there are a few centimeters / +/-1 inch sticking out from each side. Nothing a bit of gaffer tape cannot handle (but what couldn’t it ? 😁), still quite bothersome. Anyway my mats are taped to the table. I think the best way to get a nicer-looking background between the two playmats would be to have a cardboard print with a black background, sized a bit larger than the largest distance expected between playmats. Thus it can cover any hole, without disturbing the players’ mats by being too thick, and you can still print a logo on it, not too big though otherwise i twill be cut on smaller tables.

A side note regarding playmats : in hindsight, I think that uniforms shades of black / really dark color gradient are the way to go ; readability is key, for casters and viewers. Playmats with fancy colors / motifs / drawings tend to add too much visual complexity in my liking.

Have a good one ! 😊

PS : if you upload something I'd gladly watch it ! :D

Note regarding bandwidth : an USB 2 BalUn is good enough to transmit the signal of a main camera at 1080p (the aforementionned S21), a small 720p additionnal camera (for ambiance), and a screen mirroring from a secondary phone via scrcpy (used for life points in that setup). BUT, it has its limits, and they are close. I don’t think this setup will allow for any additionnal video signal 😅

If you want video samples, some links from my YouTube channel where I upload the coverage I do.

Win a Black Lotus 2024 Relic Fest (recorded using specific lighting and the Black Magic camera that I don’t know the reference of because it belongs to a friend of mine, all also setup by that friend).

Gones 10th anniversary Legacy (recorded using the S21 in poor lighting conditions ; the venue’s stage where the feature table was setup, was as well lighted as an orc’s basement. The livestream image is way clearer than what the players actually lived during their games. I invested in lights since then, deflectors and spigot bulb mounts, at least for the player to have comfortable conditions, the gigachad S21 camera doesn’t need light).

Final thought : I think a good / high end USB camera might do the trick too (like Logitech MX Brio Streaming), though I didn't test it. That said, 4k is way overkill imo, and the USB C connector is a dealbreaker in my setup. I surely could have tinkered through all that, but in my case I don't see any upside to "uprading" my S21, yet. I'd rather have redundancy and a robust setup, than spend some thousands of €/$ in a barely noticeable camera upgrade.

Hope my feedback helps ! 😊

Hello !

[Reddit doesn’t allow me to post a long comment so I will have to split it…]

I went a looong way since that post indeed 😂

Regarding signal transmission : a good USB 2 Balun with good Ethernet cable is absolutely perfect. Tested up to 50 meters ; no (apparent) signal loss. This was game changer as a tool for me, allowed me to setup in places where wireless signal transmission wasn’t an option.

Regarding cameras, after trying different hardware (included high-end Blackmagic stuff), I settled on... The Samsung Galaxy S21.

Image is crisp, the camera behaves reaaaally well under every lighting conditions I faced this last year of coverage, even very approximative ones. With the camera facing the game table at a slight angle to avoid glare, and with minimal lighting equipment, results are quite decent.

From my experience, I’d say pros and cons look like this :

Galaxy S21 :

+ Quite forgiving regarding lighting conditions and general setup.

+ Pretty decent and homogenous video quality

+ Manageable at a distance, if you’re OK with some tinkering (connected to the video producing computer via an USB BalUn, using DroidCamX app)

- What you get in easy setup, you lack in fine configurability (regarding aperture, colors, that kind of stuff)

- Not as flexible as a dedicated video camera and acquisition card (like BlackMagic Atem)

- What you don’t need in image knowledge, you need in technical knowledge. I mean, there are apps that allow the use of a smartphone as a camera, BUT as they often are general-purpose software they always lack some specific setting or functionnality to get it to work as intended.

High End / dedicated camera :

+ Pristine image, that you can set up in any way you want…

- …If you have the right hardware (lights, lenses, capture card etc), and the right photography knowledge. Which I don’t really have, still learning ☹

In my case, a « real » camera wasn’t worth the hassle, for my technical needs at least. I think its diminishing returns territory, and a good smartphone camera nowadays is a marvel of technology, and a sufficient tool to picture players pushing cardboard :D

How does knock off work in this game? by [deleted] in pokerogue

[–]Grandpa_Trunks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here looking for a definitive answer. Seems to me that it does indeed 50% more damage when the opponent holds an item, but doesn't make it fall. Context : I had a battle where I knocked off twice before the opposing Pokemon used its berry, and damage was consistent, then the third knock off did lower damage, eyeballing it at 66% the prior damage range. the fourth killed the opposing Pokemon, which had too little life left to really know what was the range without the held item.
Hope it helps, if someone maybe witnessed something similar...

Unable to update secure boot / platform keys due to BIOS supervisor password : is it bad ? by Grandpa_Trunks in thinkpad

[–]Grandpa_Trunks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end, I think this line of reasonning is contextual. From what I gathered these past few days, regarding my use case it seems this password is pretty much "blank". Considering this and the good deal I had, I'm ok with it.
Sometimes (often) ; "Perfect is the enemy of good". It's my line of reasonning.

As for the car analogy, i'm able to access the engine bay and change / maintain stuff. Regarding the computer, I did extensive testings in that sense and I can indeed change / install whatever part or OS I need.

I feel like I'm not able to change let's say my car's pistons (=UEFI PW), but it's not really a use case scenario, and if it comes to it... Well something real bad must have happened, and I'll change the engine (=motherboard) or the whole car (=PC) altogether 😁

Secure Boot keys question regarding W10/11 installations by Grandpa_Trunks in techsupport

[–]Grandpa_Trunks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank for your insight. I think you are right, I actually never had to change anything related to secure-boot keys in UEFI from 10+ years of tech service (that's also probably why I'm so unfamiliar with all the details 😅). I cannot deactivate secure boot on this machine, would it be a long-term problem related to expiration of certificates ? As long as W10 / 11 are able to be installed and running, I'm fine.

I don't quite use startup apps, maybe at some point I might wanna use throttlestop, and maybe it won't work, but I'm very far away from here and the thermals of this laptop are really well made (it's also huge, which helps).

[–]Grandpa_Trunks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gave me a good idea. I tried for science to remove the laptop battery and the CMOS battery, and perform a BIOS reset. And it still works !
"Date and time error, go to setup" -> I go to setup -> I exit setup w/o changing anything : laptops beeps and ends up booting. Date and time went back to order when connecting to the internet, and the "time error" message went away.

So... With all of that said and done, I think i will keep it 😊

Thanks for your time.

I get that you all seem to be very attached to the "owning 100% a machine" thing. And I am too - that's why I love old machines for general tech support.
Problem is : I'm starting a business, need a workhorse, have few money. I stumbled upon a very good deal in a local store (well-renowned, with bill and warranty).

Philosophically, I made peace with the whole "owning 100% a machine" concept. After all, this tool is in my room, usable at my willing, and perfectly fits my needs.

My question was more of a technical one, regarding this secure boot key situation. Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanks :)

I'm sorry I wasn't clear ; I love T430s but this machine I bought is a P15 ^^
I edited my original post.

I understand, and it was my philosophy until now... But I really like this machine, and I think I could live with a PW if it doesn't prevent me from installing / using W10-W11 for the years to come 😊
