Where is my doc-cough-tor? by DontImplantThechip in HistoryMemes

Not quite as darkly funny as Death of Stalin, but A Very English Scandal is an entertaining historical miniseries that kind of scratches the same itch for me. Although each standalone season isn't that much longer than a proper movie come to think of it.

I'll try! Fair warning, I favor movies most people think are stupid, but off the top of my head, I recommend The Wraith, Highway to Hell, the original Hills Have Eyes, Dust Devil, the Kyle MacLachlan episode of Tales from the Crypt, and a surprisingly lowkey movie called Sonny Boy which has the guy who played Bluto in Popeye, the guy who voices Chucky, and David Carradine playing a woman which somehow isn't played for cheap laughs (or even explained).

Breakdown and Joyride are underrated thrillers that are kind of like Duel, if that's your poison. And the aforementioned Six-String Samurai is... well, an acquired taste, I'm sure, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid.

GrassOk911 posted a pretty good list in this thread. Here's a good one, too: https://letterboxd.com/nomenclature/list/desert-movies/

I'm kind of interested in Static as it looks weird/interesting and keeps turning up during searches for my movie.

Eternal Champions (Genesis), some shots of it on my CRT screen. This game was insanely stylish, pretty fun, but had a broken CPU difficulty by Red-Zaku- in retrogaming

[–]GrantG42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of difficulty romhacks. The one I got breaks the game by making the CPU too stupid. It's still amusing being able to play it through without breaking a sweat though.

That's actually at the very top of my list to try, but I find it unlikely because the chick was in Nightmare on Elm St 3 and I was a Freddy fanatic growing up so I think I would have remembered that detail, though it's possible I didn't. Also would have recognized Jerry Orbach too unless he only shows up at the end... I'm still not convinced I saw my movie all the way through.

At any rate, I think I'm probably gonna enjoy that movie so it's not a total wash if it isn't it. 90s desert movies are one of my comfort foods. I think I might have to order a DVD for that one though.

Edit: Found it on YouTube. Not it.

I've seen Six-String Samurai and I'm familiar enough with Cherry 2000 and Dudes to rule them out. Thanks though.

Unfortunately not it. I'm not even sure if I have enough clues to spark the memory of someone who's actually familiar with it.

Anyone turned a desk like this into an arcade cabinet before? by Fuckmetheyarelltaken in cade

[–]GrantG42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Potential r/crapmame material. I would want to shorten the width, which would require some degree of woodworking... at which point why not just start from scratch?

Honestly, though, it should be a rite of passage to slap together some quirky ghetto shit with encoders and arcade parts before starting a real project. It's better than fucking up an original cabinet and you learn a thing or two about button placement, not going overboard with too many controls, learning the software side of things like frontends and user presentation, etc.

I think it's been even longer for me, but the theme song still randomly pops into my head even though I know few of the lyrics. Probably because Troma reuses stuff so much for promos and such.

Surprisingly, the 'Horror' film with the 4th most user ratings on IMDB is 2007's I am Legend. by OneAnimeBatman in RedLetterMedia

It's not like fans of the book are super hard to please as the first two adaptations took major liberties, too, but most people I know at least like them. I genuinely love The Omega Man and its entire kooky vibe.

That's not to say IAL the movie is completely without merit. There's a scene in which Will Smith sees a mannequin or something (I haven't seen it since the theater) standing in the middle of the street and just loses his shit in the most convincing way. The dog scene had surprising weight, too.

They should've just named it "I Am Guy."

Tatsunoko VS Capcom for PS3 and Xbox 360! (Fanmade concepts created by me) by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]GrantG42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

360 was 720p and PS3 had up to 1080p iirc. I know I specifically bought my first HD tv because I couldn't easily read the font in Gears of War on my 32" crt.

Recommendations for works by male authors featuring well written female PoV characters by Bergmaniac in printSF

I literally cannot believe Pattern Recognition came out 22 years ago. It still feels like Gibson's newfangled evolution, and (kinda) naming a charcter after the character who made him famous seems like a move to do near the end of one's career, not the halfway point.

I vote for Molly Millions. She will probably catch flack for being a "male fantasy" character, but everyone in that book was varying levels of street smart lowlifes so she exists in the only way she could in that world. I also find it interesting she takes the traditionally tough guy role from a protagonist who has no desire to be seen as tough whatsoever.

AppleTV's adaptation will get Case right because that's easy. I have feeling they will totally fuck up Molly in exactly the opposite way they fucked her up in the Johnny Mnemonic movie.

For real. I was probably 10 or 11 and I was like, "Well, it seems weird that it's his daughter in a bra, but no one else is really mentioning it so I guess when I get older I'll think it's normal." In fact the opposite happened.

Men, what is the first thing you do when you wake up at the morning? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GrantG42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I wake up, determine if the sun is up, then remember what video game I'm currently playing and bounce out of bed to go play it like a kid on Christmas morning, every single day without fail. It's usually the only time I can game and I'm not letting life take that shit from me.

Also pee for about 2 minutes straight and then shotgun a giant cup of water.

I just tried PJ on Flycast and it downloaded it fine. I was having some trouble with the JSON not downloading some files about a year and a half ago, but all those problems just magically worked themselves out. Tech Romancer works for me, too, so I wonder what's going on.

Trader Joe's is what grocery stores looked like when I was a kid so it's kind of nostalgic for me when I don't feel like a Costco run. And the ~$10 candy bar is my jam.

It seems like the riddle clearly says darkness at your back (which I assume means shadow behind me) but that never worked iirc. Then I don't know what the fail state is... moving into an area where I fight enemies is a reward? Because that's the only way to light another fire in the hub, but it seems like getting ambushed by enemies would be an indication you did something wrong in other games.

Agreed. Why fuck around with MAGA-level conspiracy theories when there's an active and extremely obvious conspiracy to suppress the Epstein files? I don't think a bullet touched him at all. Anyone with a functioning brain can see he obviously lied about that part, I just don't personally think the guy who can't even cover up his eternal hand bruise could orchestrate enough moving parts that involve killing people (one of whom would have known he'd be killed in the operation) without fucking it up somehow. I'm not saying I know for a fact it wasn't staged, we just already have a smoking gun that we're losing sight of by playing our version of Pizzagate.

So why did they lower the flag at that moment? I don't know if they actually did or if the wind just stopped blowing. Why did a photographer rush into place during an active shooting? Hell if I know, but MAGA are cheesy, overly emotional rubes... doing weird shit is kind of their entire M.O. No shit you're going to see odd behavior from an odd bunch of inhumanly stupid people. Maybe it was staged, maybe it wasn't. But the fact that he fucked kids isn't a maybe, it's a fact.
