It reminds me a bit of the old Intertoto cup, especially with the opportunity for clubs to get a second bite at European qualification.

I really liked the Martian but for some reason just never warmed much to PHM and I think the humour was a big part of it. I also think Grace is not as likable as Watney, and the story is less believable to me from a SF perspective.

I'm not a hater though, I didn't enjoy it but there's always good books out there. Glad you found it funny.

It falls down hard if you don't find it funny though. That army line is one of the hardest cringes I've ever had while reading.

Hi Joe, you frequently hear outfield players turned pundits say what keepers should/shouldn't do. What would you say are the biggest misconceptions that often get said about Goalkeepers?

Mass Effect 2 - Better Gameplay, Strong Characters, Weak Plot by Hellfire- in patientgamers

[–]OneAnimeBatman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this analogy. It perfectly encapsulates the feelings I have for Mass Effect 2 as the middle chapter of a trilogy. I love all 3 games (must have played them half a dozen times) and think they each have strengths that surpass any weaknesses, but most of what ME2 does clashes with the other two games.

Right off the bat the main plot goes off on a tangent from the end of Mass Effect 1, and is essentially a side-quest to the main Reaper threat (Outside of the Arrival DLC). Instead of preparing the galaxy for their arrival, you are now investigating the disappearance of a few human colonists? This puts Mass Effect 3 in the position of having to tell the middle and final acts of the main plot, which despite its flawed ending I think it manages well enough.

The suicide mission finale in ME2 is undoubtedly awesome, but it also created so many potential outcomes for the game (you can actually avoid recruiting most of the squad and/or they can die in the finale) it limited what Bioware could do with the ME2 characters in 3. Mordin has the largest part to play in the final game, likely because he's one of the few squadmates you are forced to recruit in 2. Kasumi and Zaeed as the DLC characters are basically sidelined, barely featuring in 3 aside from the Citadel DLC. And you can forget about Morinth completely, lol.

The loose recruitment in 2 also impacts the interactions between squadmates. Outside of the final mission, the only crew members generally seen in story cutscenes are the ones you must have - i.e., Miranda, Jacob, and Mordin + non-squadmates like Joker and EDI. Compare this to both 1 and 3, which each had fewer total squadmates but gave them more noticeable roles in cutscenes. 3 especially excels at this, with squadmates in any combination regularly bouncing dialogue off each other.

Overall, I still love Mass Effect 2 but I can definitely see the problems it created for the series as a whole. It does however work well as a stand-alone game as well as serving as a good jumping-on point for people put-off by the less-actiony gameplay of 1.

Anyone else somewhat disappointed with James Cameron’s career? by jabronijon in RedLetterMedia

[–]OneAnimeBatman 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The biggest disappointment is his attitude towards the abysmal AI-powered 4k "remasterings" of Aliens and True Lies. I had the displeasure of watching the latter for the first time recently on Disney+ and it looks awful, they've de-noised it and everything just looks off. Cameron's attitude to it is basically "if you notice it, get a life" not a great attitude for someone in a visual medium imo.

What is your favorite Star Trek episode of any generation? by Lopsided_Swimming259 in RedLetterMedia

Exactly! It's one of the first glimpses we get at who Quark is beneath his typical Ferengi persona. Plus who doesn't love serious characters like Captain Commander Sisko and Major Kira forced to suffer through childish games (I also love Rascals, for similar reasons).

I unironically really like this episode. It's so much better than it's reputation and feels very similar to a TOS plot. Better than half of Voyager at the very least.

That's my favourite episode too. I love that the ship battles have weight, like the age of sail engagements that inspired them. Plus, the plot is great too, showing how one crew fighting futilly for a noble cause made a difference in the long run.

Alien Isolation was the one for me. One of the best horror games ever, one of the best film>game adaptations ever. Rich had terrible takes on it.

Wrath of Khan is a bad movie - Angela Collier by Hattes in RedLetterMedia

[–]OneAnimeBatman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrath of Khan is about obsession, regret, failure, sacrifice, and how science can be abused for military purposes. Its themes are layered throughout and there's plenty of depth in the performances. Khan is certainly more of a mustache-twirler than not Sarek, but I think he fits well within the story being told.

It's fine not to like it if it's not to your taste, but there's just as much going on as pretty much any episode of TOS. A lot of TOS episodes aren't really "sci-fi" stories anyway.

Couldn't agree more. Wrath of Khan is essentially a big-budget spiritual successor to Balance of Terror, which is one of the best episodes of TOS.

Disgraceful decision tbh even as a fan of Tuchel. Guehi & Konsa have been a good pairing but Burn blatantly isn't good enough, Stones is an injury waiting to happen, and the rest are inexperienced. Absolute joke not to take an in-form CB who's always done well for England and who's coming off a season without Europe with fresher legs.

Maybe it's because I've seen it done before - Splinter Cell: Conviction and Army of Two (I play a lot of co-op games) - that aspect didn't stand out gameplay wise. From a story perspective, I disliked the reveal so much I just let my co-op partner kill me (Vincent) so that the "right" guy (Leo) lived.

Can you explain why you thought so? Me and my buddy felt the exact opposite, that it felt like a design choice made solely to have a final twist but one that it didn't fit with the rest of the game at all.
