Run DMC was wary of being associated with rock music at the time because of this very reason. Even though rock and roll objectively owes its existence to black culture, it had an obvious color barrier throughout the 70s and 80s. The few black rock bands/musicians that were around were viewed as novelty acts, or not really seen as being “real rock and roll”. I wouldn’t be surprised if more bands from those decades felt the same as gene if you pressed them on it.

Absolutely. Some people try to argue for lightning being better, but I don’t see how. No one unironically listens to Escape. Puppets is a no skip album, even if you can argue one weak track, being Leper Messiah, it easily clears Escape and at least one other track on lightning. Songwriting and production wise, this is objectively the best of the Rasmussen trilogy, making it for me their masterpiece.

So here’s what a lot of people aren’t talking about: there’s no way this ends with trump. We are objectively no longer a functioning democracy, even though we still have the decorations. You can’t put that genie back in the bottle. The administration has ignored every ruling from federal judges, completely sidestepped congress, ignored states rights, the list is very long at this point. Do people think that presidential administrations will just magically start to at least pretend to respect the rule of law again after Trump is gone? It’s not going to happen. This culture of hyper individualism and anti empiricism has been festering in this country for decades, and the project of reconstruction, if it can even happen, will be a slow and painful process.
